A Caturday Primer?!?

/was that what they were reading to the cats?
//or was that what I just read?

The cat in the first pic seems to enjoy the company.  And what a great way to get the kids to read too.

I can't fap to this.

I'll need the kleenex, because I'm horribly allergic to cats.

That's disgusting, Sub- oh, you mean for tears or something.

2014-02-13 05:36:43 PM
Wouldn't be easier to put a cat in a shelter, than read a book?. It's not like a cat will listen to a kid, follow direction and build a shelter.

2014-02-13 05:47:43 PM
I'm sure the cats appreciate being read to before their euthanizations.

2014-02-13 05:53:35 PM
That could be distracting and dangerous.

Its a benefit to the cats too, as they are more social animals than myth would like us to believe. The cats love the companionship, make them more friendly towards humans, doesnt turn them into ferals. This way is usually used to turn ferals into house pets. Imagine living in prison, in isolation, in death row. Thats what the shelters offer the cats, they dont want to be there, and in some of them it may show in antisocial behavior. Euthanasia is not good for shelters, as they lose money when they do so. So best to turn them into social cats, and get them adopted.

Also, emergency food when the apocalypse comes. Little rosemary, salt, garlic. Thanks, Obama!

show me cats reading to shelter kids and I'll be impressed

It's a pretty big mistake to think I care about little kids or stray cats.
But I do like the word "wherein".

That's adorable.

And cats love books. If you read one on the floor, they will sit on it. Our dog used to do that do. (Attention whores.)

The Egyptian Goddess of Literature is Bast, the domestic cat-headed goddess. Cats have had a long association with literature because they eat rats and mice, which eat leather, vellum and parchment, as well as chewing up paper to make their nests and sharpen their teeth.

Books love cats, too. Alan Coren's editor told him that people mostly buy books about cats, golf and Nazis, so he published his newspaper articles as Golfing for Cats, and they put a big Swastika on the cover. Coren's not the greatest writer but this is a book you can buy just for the cover if you find the original British editions. It was too controversial for the American market.

Lets be honest here. The cats just want the human interaction. I doubt they can really follow or understand the book. They'd probably have more fun if you tossed them a jingle ball, some yarn, and a cardboard box, as long as a human is there, too. Maybe even turn the channel to Animal Planet and let them enjoy that as well.

I toured Oregon's Death Row recently. The death chamber is used as a library for the inmates when executions aren't scheduled. So there is precedent.

I dunno man, when I was a kid, I had a cat that would sit in front of me while I read books to him. We had boon time, and it became a regular thing.

This gets kids to read and teaches them that it's an enjoyable thing to do. It socializes the cats. WIN/WIN. And it results in cute Caturday pics, for EXTRA WIN.

Also, if there is anything cuter than smiling cats, I don't know what it is. (I have one, too!)

Also, any story involving shelter animals and books requires me to post the following: "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx

Having volunteered at a (no-kill) shelter working with feral kittens, this plan has one major failing... You don't let little kids anywhere near the cats that need socialization the most.  Kiddies don't exactly have the most delicate touch and respect for kitty's boundaries, and poorly socialized cats can cause serious damage even to an adult human.

And on the flip side of that, the sort of cats you can stick in a room with a reading 6YO don't need socialization, they just need someone to sign the paperwork.

That said, I still approve of this, because the cats get bored out of their skulls locked in a 3x6 cage all day, so it gives them a half hour to stretch and run in circles and do something other than stare at the opposite wall of cages.
