I've known plenty of men who melt down on a Windows computer when it presents them with any sort of error. So does this mean that men want their computer to crash a lot?

If you want a 'manly' OS, get BSD or Linux. Learn the command line. None of this girly mouse or touchpad crap.

I don't care, a tool is a tool. I remember when I first moved to Canada and people got religious about the robertson screwdriver, it just doesn't make any dumb sense whatsoever.

Considering that OSX is based in part on a UNIX kernel...

So much this.

If you're an artist or something, Apple products are great and you should go with them.

If you like to tinker and screw around with your system without it actually doing what you want it to, you go with *nix.

If you have to actually get work done, you go with a Windows box.

/hopefully that'll get things here going

It really doesn't make sense.  So much of Apple's appeal is in design, but iTunes just continues to get crappier and crappier in that respect with each iteration.

MS has become to new "underdog" in how people see it, so now it is becoming cool again. At least to hipsters, who refuse to admit it is cool since it would force them to change to something else.

And, this, obviously. We're past the whole "OS or browser fanboi" stage that was popular a decade or so ago. They're tools, nothing more. Fashion does not play into your choice of hammers, so why should it play into your choice of operating systems? Or browsers? Or music players? Or... whatever?

That's the illusion which is, slowly, going away. Google was fashionable. Apple was fashionable. Fashion is fickle. Google's evil, and Jobs is dead. Stop listening to hype and simply evaluate the tool for your needs. If it works, get it. If it doesn't, get a different tool.

It's very heavy on system resources.  I don't think it supports FLAC either, which is vastly superior to ALAC.

It adds data to your MP3 tags which it should not do without asking.

It will sort your MP3s and rename them in a pretty terrible fashion (if you allow it.)

OSX is great (native Bash/Unix CLI coupled with a nice looking GUI and lots of available applications that 'just work' for the most part), but it sucks having to pay so much for an Mac. Yes, I know that buying a machine with similar specs from any other manufacturer costs about the same. Apple just doesn't offer low end gear. I got my HP laptop for about $400, I think the cheapest Mac Book is around $900.

I use Windows 8.1 on my laptop. It works well enough that I don't plan on changing it. I have noting against Linux desktop operating systems, I just can't be assed to change my setup at the moment.

In 2014, from a usability standpoint, the "qualifications" necessary to install and configure an OS should largely consist of knowing your own name, what time zone you live in, what language you speak, and being able to click on "next" and "accept". If much more expertise than that is required then the designers have screwed the pooch.

I spent nearly 5 hours trying to upload a freaking audio note from my phone to itunes on my pc.

Here's what happened.

Plug in phone.  YAY that worked
Enable transfer of voice recordings/audio files in iTunes menu
Hit sync
Get massive error on phone that its memory is gone and causes it to freeze, immediately become confused
Notice that itunes decided that it wanted to reinstall every app I've ever purchased and was doing so (even though all app syncing was disabled, and about half of them were further specified to not reinstall)
Delete all reinstalled apps on phone
Disable all apps manually again in itunes, which takes ages because iTunes is slow as crap and I have downloaded a lot of apps in the last 4-5 years
hiat sync
Watches as all the apps are reloaded onto my phone again
Repeat last few steps about 6 times before it finally stops farking up
Notice that the voice memo STILL HASN'T SHOWN UP

Also during this apple decided it wanted to delete from all my playlists and phones a lot of my video game soundtracks I had downloaded from steam, and also had to relocate them and transfer to itunes)

Browse internet for solutions, learns that in most recent update you can no longer transfer voice memos to the pc even though the god damn option is right there
Gets third party software, causes even more issues with library
Looks up more solution on internet, sees the most painful and enlightening answer ever.  "don't try doing anything, itunes sucks, just email it to yourself"

go to audio recordings, hits send message, send as email, and finally get it on my pc.

fark iTunes.

Yeah, I am sure that is what the average user is worried about. I went with the new AFLAC format, but it just sounds like a pissed off duck.

The truth of the matter is that the majority of people are still on Windows and installing iTunes on Windows is a freaking mess. The application doesn't seem to work very well, and the installer installs a bunch of additional services that tend to have problems that throw up warnings on startup. You would think someone would have come up with a good alternative by now.

I really like my iPhone 4s it's a solid piece of tech that does everything I need and a lot of what I want.  I also love my windows PCs I have a Windows 7 big bastard in a full tower that warehouses all my media, plays my games and runs my drafting software.  It outputs to three screens, two in the office and my TV in the living room.  I have a windows 7 ultrabook and a windows 8 laptop.  All of them work pretty much flawlessly except for a bad HDD in the HP ultrabook which was replaced.

There just isn't a single compelling reason for me to switch away from windows. I can purchase OEM windows licenses, I build my own desktop PCs and I'm comfortable dealing with issues in the windows environment, since windows 7 came out though I haven't had many issues to fix.  One other thing too, while it's not the best antivirus solution out there MSE should have had it's praises sung from the rooftops when it was released.  It's a solid antivirus solution and unless you are into really horrible porn or pirate everything it is a nice free antivirus program.  MS isn't all bad.

There is no single solution for all of our computing needs and writing off Apple is just as stupid as writing off MS.

For media players there's Foobar, VLC, MusicBee, Media Monkey, etc.

I use a heavily modified Foobar (Darkone V4 theme + some other plug-ins) but iTunes still has some functionality and presentation that I prefer over every other media player.

I don't think any of those sync with iPhones, but they do sync with iPods.

Because Apple actually has to design the interface for their software. See iTunes and iOS7. With hardware, they just buy whatever Samsung is designing and slap it into a metal case instead of plastic.

False. The $400 HP laptop you referenced is equivalent to the $2,000 macbook. You're paying 500% margin on your hardware.

These issues with iTunes disappear when you get off the iTreadmill of course.

I have to disagree with a point above; almost every application gets worse with updates. Bloat, removed features, screwed interfaces (by the way the guy above was NOT talking about the Start Menu, he said interface and meant it), slower performance, cheese-moving defaults, loss of backward compatibility, increasingly annoying prompts, new errors and vulnerabilities, loss of data, bricking of the application... OldVersion is our friend.

I'm just surprised the male favorite brand wasn't something like Budweiser or Ford.

Same here

Linux for desktop
Win8.1 for gaming
Android for mobile

I don't have a problem with OSX or Apple, but I never have liked iTunes, iPods, iPads, and iPhones. Either costs too much for what an old Android can do (iPod) or the system is too restricted due to having a Linux background (iPhone/iPad).

Luckily all my work related things like email, typing documents, or price hunting. I could use a tablet or Chromebook for what I need to do so I go Linux (Solydx, based on Debian Testing, What LMDE turned into).
