Guys looking for pickup sex in a chat room, who are approached by a "teenager" who claims to want to have sex with them? These are not the pedophiles you're looking for. Pathetic losers who don't know how the Internet works, yes, but not rapists. Not predators.

What part of meeting a teen on the internet who invites you over to her house for sex does not sound like a trap.

I wonder if any of them got the grilled stuffed nacho from Taco Bell beforehand.

Oh, they used that one back in '98.  I mean, they're OUT of the obvious ones.  They've moved on to making puns and wisecracks by now.

So when I was in my early 20s, I met this girl online who said she was 18. Starting dating her, etc. She was a really cool chick. Turns out she was 16, but fortunately that was the age of consent in that state. Then it turned out her dad was a sniper for the SWAT team. I  broke it off. :p

I remember that same sentiment being expressed on "To Catch a Predator."  In a post-incident interview with the folks running the sting, the HASROT guy asked something like "how is it that we've been doing this show for so many years, yet there are still guys who fall for it?"

To which the head of the team answered "well, unfortunately we really only catch the stupid ones."

From the linked article.

"One suspect, 47-year-old David Griffith, even told detectives he'd made plans to meet a 7-year-old for sex in an undisclosed county. Lake detectives confirmed that confession with emails between Griffith and the child's mother. The child told investigators that her mother had sexually abused her."

You don't have to be a defender of internet creeps to say that these kind of things are nearing witch hunt levels.  Is there really a need to post a persons, who is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty, home address and employer as quickly as possible?

There's been enough about these stings (especially in FL) for me to give the benefit of the doubt, IIRC they reek of entrapment once you look into the dialog.
