Ryce warned pedophiles to think twice about killing their victims.

Um... maybe you should encourage some additional thinking about the other part as well.

After reading the Wikipedia Entry on the case, I'm torn. On one hand, nothing of value was lost here.

On another hand, a psychic lead the mother to suspect Chavez? Really?

We really need judicial reform. If you should be executed, you should be. Boom, done. Look at how fast we iced the OK City bombers. That should be the norm, if not a little slow. That said, pretty much EVERY conviction in the US is at least a little suspect. System's all ferked erp. So they need to be reviewed.

Also, if you're from the other thread, notice this monster wasn't caught in a sting. These are the criminals police detectives should be hunting 24/7. No stings or vice crime.

Wait, what?

doglover: Wait, what

Sorry. It was the person who employed Chavez.

From the Jimmy Ryce Wiki Page:

Chavez worked for the Scheinhaus family. He lived in a trailer on their property. Around the time of Jimmy's disappearance, Scheinhaus reported several items missing from her home including a handgun and jewelry. Scheinhaus suspected Chavez, after consulting with a psychic, but had no evidence to support her suspicions. Aided by a locksmith, Scheinhaus entered Chavez's trailer. She found her handgun and young Jimmy's bookbag. She reported her findings to the

Being advised of his rights and after a 55-hour-long interrogation, Chavez openly admitted to abducting, raping and murdering Jimmy. Chavez also led police to the boy's body, which was dismembered and hidden in cement in three plastic planters.

Okay. The family who hired Chavez found a handgun missing. The mother consulted with a psychic (ie talked to a cold reader who told her what she wanted to hear), then she hired a locksmith to open Chavez's trailer where the stolen goods and backpack of Jimmy's were. At least, according to wikipedia.

Faster is not the same as summary. Also, those who I would condemn to death would be those who are unquestionably guilty. If I were running the prisons, the people IN prison on death row would be few and freakin' monsters. Everyone else would get the bennefit of the doubt, and for non violent stuff second chances galore.

I live in Japan now. Japan has much less crime than the US. Part of that is Japan has a LOT less laws you can break. Brothels are illegal, but manage to operate next to police stations by bending the law. Drinking in public isn't just legal, it's encouraged in some seasons. But Japan has more rules than the US. Why not more laws? Most mores are left to people to deal with privately.

The US could use that philosophy.

I know you're trolling, but how do you know he's a homosexual? Pedophilia exists seperately from sexual orientation (Hince how Jerry Sandusky was able to rape male children all day long, and then bone his wife), or in lieu of an adult sexual orientation.

frkkin' A. I just a few hours ago had a discussion with my dad. He was freaked out because Holder apparently wants to let ex-cons vote. I pointed out to him that the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world, which isn't a great track record for the "land of the free". He chose to end the discussion early. Whatever, he brought it up.

Wow, 20 years of appeals and there could have been another round but it was denied?

What the hell, Florida, do your prosecutors take 5-year coffee breaks or something?  Even with 4-5 mandatory appeals and a couple technical ones you should be looking at a decade between charges and carrying out the sentence, tops.

Not "chomos", child, molesters molest boys and girls alike. It's not a gay or straight thing, and while it may sometimes be about power, it's usually just a paraphilia.

jso2897: Many chomos molest children of both genders - it's about power, not what people like us think of as "sex".

You're thinking along the lines of rape - which IS about power and control, and less about sex.

Actual pedophiles don't see what they are doing as rape, they see it as "loving" that child. Even though the child didn't give vocal consent, or is not even of an age where they COULD consent, something made them KNOW the child wanted them - body language, or even a smile.

To them, it's not about power. It's about giving the child what their twisted mind thinks the child wants.

It's actually both. They are hardwired from before birth to see children in their age of attraction range in a sexual light. It is, quite literally, a third and pathological sexual orientation that exists BEYOND the standard ASOs of heterosexuality and variants.

While some people MAY be set off by abuse themselves, or may have developed pedophilic tendancies as a result of abuse, many were that way from the day their brain structure developed in utero, if current research is to be believed.

This is what makes it so difficult to treat them. Castration does nothing to prevent recidivism in those who have acted on their desires. Aversion therapy has a lifetime of about six months. And research into the topic is difficult, because those that know they feel that way and want help are ostracised the moment they seek it.

Until we have a way to rewire the brain, there is no way to stop pedo from being a pedo. However, stranger cases like this - especially where they abduct and murder a child are rare. Typically, it's someone close to the child, or even the child's parents or a trusted member of the community, like a priest or teacher.

If they can be treated, however, that would be better.

Absolutely. I'm all for rehabilitation if possible, but only if they haven't yet hurt anyone. But it doesn't seem likely to work in most cases.
