Thankfully this government isn't run by monopoly-minded men, so they'll tell them to take a hike.  I mean, near as I can tell this'll leave us with my current cable company and Comcast as the only two options if they actually allow this.

Oh, this is what I thought when I saw this:

Comcast Universal NBC USA Bravo E! set to merge with Time Warner Brothers CNN TheCW truTV.

/and a host of others I'd think of if I wikied it.

The government will say nothing because you can still chose Dish Network, or DirecTV or Uverse (where available). Cable itself is a government sanctioned monopoly, each company has their own territory and they aren't allowed to crossover. That's why Comcast doesn't directly compete with Time Warner or Cox in any given market.

2014-02-13 12:45:20 AM
Done in one. I currently have the choice of AT&T and TimeWarner. Any reason to switch to U-verse? or just stay until Comcast sucks up my district?

I'm actually happy with TW and I've been using them for about a decade. :(

2014-02-13 12:56:36 AM
I have the choice of Time Warner, or Time Warner.  U-Verse has twice announced they were launching in my neighborhood and gone door to door to sign people up, yet never actually rolled out U-Verse.  The last time, the door to door people said they were only doing pre-orders for triple play service, and since I don't need Internet, TV, and a phone they left.  I guess not enough people want all 3 services combined together for them to justify the expense of putting in an upgrade DSLAM.

Or I can get AT&T ADSL, which at the highest tier gets me 512k up, and I think "up to" 6Mbps down.

There is no justice.

So, with the conglomeration of resources, its probably easier to get things done and allow things to be done cheaper and easier, right? Time to jack up the prices 100%! Everyone loves Monopoly!

Clearly less competition is more competition.

Or something.

Everybody benefits!  Hurray!

The other bidder was Charter Communications.  And as bad as they and Comcast are, according to the University of Michigan Customer Satisfaction Survey Time Warner is worse than that.

They did put in U-Verse here.  And by "put in", I mean they renamed their slow-ass DSL service "U-Verse."

For reliable fiber service direct to my house? Yep.

Did anyone else see that TW said today that they see no need for fiber? That our internet is fast enough?

Ah just another statistic for America to suck at.

I tell you, with this news and the possible elimination of Net Neutrality, it's almost as if everyone in charge of this country intentionally wants us to fall behind the rest of the world just so they can make money.

I only care what this is going to do to my RoadRunner.  I wonder if I'm going to lose my email addresses.  That's going to be a royal PITA having to remember all the stupid websites I've registered with my RR email addresses.  When I remember that I need to log into one, I usually have to do password recovery.  That's going to suck if I can't get the email anymore.

I hear ya. First, they state it's bandwidth. Next, it's content. Maybe telemarking Davey Crockett with a rifle competition guy was right about radio internet.

No, but as a very unhappy TWC customer with no other viable options for internet at 20 mb/s 14.3 mb/s downstream, I do wonder if Comcrap will at least make an effort to provide me what I'm paying for, or finally bury the ugly orange cable that's been laying in my yard since last September.

Cheer up, people!  At least you don't have Mediacom.  According to wikipedia, "In a survey conducted by Consumer Reports magazine in 2012, Mediacom is the worst cable provider in the country according to the 50,000 people polled."

(only have them for internet now, used to have tv as well.)

Ohhh please.  Oh please. Oh Please!! oh please!! oh please!!!

The revolution cannot come fast enough. Let these asshole consolidate and consolidate.  Eventually people will get sick and tired of the corporate control and we'll come up with something better than these asshole dinosaurs.

I vote for a wired/wireless mesh network

/TWC customer. They blow. Not as much as Comcast, I hear. And not as bad as ATT.

Wishful thinking is cute. When west coast "tech" cities are limited and throttled with Comcast and Centurylink, I'm not as enthusiastic as far as options. 2.7mbps but can still pirate :)

2014-02-13 02:10:30 AM
HEre's a silly idea:

Could we, once there's been enough consolidation, break these farks up into separate Internet/Phone and TV companies?

2014-02-13 02:16:46 AM
My TW 'broadband' is usually always up and consistent.  My cable is very often non functional.

Why does my cable box have to send a request to some server for me to access my recorded programs?  That's DRM Dumb right there.

2014-02-13 02:17:08 AM
Wireless mesh network cannot work in large scale.
If there is ever going to be a viable alternative to internet, people have to stop dreaming about silly hacks and think a lot harder.

Hit it with a lawnmower on a day when you don't care if your service is out and report it.  I'd bet they bury it properly the second time.

I still have hope for this.

Capitalism needs competition to function properly.

Yeah, but we really only need one company.

If Walmart buys Target, then Bank of America buys Wells Fargo, Google buys Apple and Microsoft, then Verizon buys AT&T, Google buys Verizon, Walmart buys Google, Bank of America buys Walmart then we can all live happily in the Bank of America.

Well, that was good timing. Net neutrality gets gutted, and Comcast goes to buy TWC. I look forward to Comcast deciding to create a higher-priced premium service to allow customers to access streaming services.

I haven't any hope that net neutrality will be restored, so I guess it's up to The Googles to expand their fiber optic networks.
