The Conti family claims the school's alleged protection of their top-ranked football program is "more important that preventing sexual harassment."

"I'm a victim of sexual harassment," said Conti's sister, who claims the player had said vulgar comments to her on at least three occasions.

"Vulgar".  Lot of range there, needs some better description to judge. She and her brother could have a real complaint, or may just be being a couple of contis.

Aside from the question of whether one "said comments" versus "made comments".

Why? I attended 2 high schools. One offered high level courses like AP and college classes (taught at a community college). These classes were weighted, counting one point higher than normal. The school had a 5 point scale, A=5 and 1=F. To be valedictorian required at least a 5.5 on that scale.

My second high school had a 12 point scale and no weighted grades. Upper 10% of graduating seniors all took fluff classes throughout high school because GPA was all that mattered. That school also had 8 35 minute long classes a day.

Give me a school with advanced classes and reserves high honors for those that excel in them. I was at least 2 semesters ahead in every subject my senior year. When there are no weighted classes students and their parents will opt for the easy A to get into a good college.

My school took the snowflake approach to AP classes. Being that if the AP kids got a GPA boost, it would hurt the normals feelings. Thus, when it came to things like GPA based scholarships, Valedictorian, and stuff like that, taking AP classes was a disadvantage. More work for the same payoff. So of course, Honors roll and Valedictorian were all people who coasted through non-AP classes while the AP students got a head start on being bitter and jaded... which I guess prepares them for the real world.

/Hated that
//Still took all the AP classes

Oh, give me a farking break.  FTA:

During the Conti news conference, a parent named Marcus Evans showed up and angrily challenged the family's version of events.
He said he witnessed the October confrontation.

"They choked the little kid, the African-American kid," said Evans, "He didn't do anything. He was trying to get away from the dad."

I bet he's full of shiat, he's just mad that someone would dare confront a  black person for unacceptable behavior.

Why does EVERYTHING have to be about race these days?  Bad people are bad people, I don't care if you're white, black, green, or yellow.

Of course, there's an alternate version of events in TFA:

During the Conti news conference, a parent named Marcus Evans showed up and angrily challenged the family's version of events.
He said he witnessed the October confrontation.
"They choked the little kid, the African-American kid," said Evans, "He didn't do anything. He was trying to get away from the dad."
The Contis attorney insisted it was the young man who lunged at the Contis and who was the aggressor.
"And then subsequently it's Larry Conti and his son who are taken into custody by the sheriff's department," said Medrano.

Now the conflicting narratives are going to get  veryentertaining.

2014-02-13 12:13:55 AM
I always find this disgusting and worthy of scorn.  This should NEVER happen in any school anywhere.  It's harmful to the students and degrades the school as a whole.  4.4 GPAs do not exist except to inflate the egos of those who 'earn' them.  It's like saying you gave 110% of your effort and now your GPA reflects it.
By the way, no tier 1 schools accept inflated grades, so why do they bother?

Close but I'm in San Diego, it's a 5 hour flight and not cheap. Our schools are usually underfunded.

Well after seeing football players pass classes they never attended and getting steered to easier classes even in high school I will believe the class president, Im guessing his sister is hot the player was saying you want to get with the star QB, she was saying no, brother broke it up, and the star decided how dare you interrupt me from doing what I want to do.

I love sports but I get sick of shiat like this going on, most of the schools just ignore it or sweep it under the rug hoping people will forget about it.

I earned A's in several honors classes, and I think any system that allows for a GPA higher than 4.0 is pants on head retarded.

/Why not an 8.0 system that allows for double A's?
//Because, it's psychotic, that's why.

2014-02-13 12:16:28 AM
Well subby, the only independent witness seems to say the father went after the player and the player swung in self defense. It also seems that the sheriffs department found sufficient cause to arrest the father and son.

JadedFloridian: Why does EVERYTHING have to be about race these days? Bad people are bad people, I don't care if you're white, black, green, or yellow.

Because saying the old white man was a racist instantly puts them on the defensive and if they have anything to lose they will back down, Im betting the sexual shiat happened, brother intervened, player attacked, father came up saw what was happening and that his little girl was involved then got pissed.

No matter what the circumstances the adult will be assumed to be in the wrong in most of those scenarios of an attack, especially if he had no marks on him.

So you'd have been fine being beaten out for honors or a scholarship by some potato who got a 4.0 taking remedial derp?

As explained above, the system actually sounds like it makes sense. As for the case FTA, I'll reserve judgement, good students can still do really stupid things.

GPA is widely and historically understood as a 4.0 scale.  If you start talking about weighting courses above 4.0 it loses any value it has as a system of rating.  Why don't you just weight the classes for the stupid kids lower instead of raising the highest range.  Why not just have a GPA on a 13.0 scale, or a 1000.0 scale for that matter?

/Because makes the whole point of having a universally understood scale meaningless, is why.
