FTA: When Select Nova Scotia put out a call for submissions, they focused on including regional food variety and didn't consider ethnicity.

"The 2014 calendar was handed out at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market, where the fresh ingredients the calendar calls "uniquely Nova Scotian" are on display."

So the calendar was supposed to show an ethnically diverse group of people eating "uniquely Nova Scotian" food? Are immigrants really "uniquely Nova Scotian"? Sure the Nova Scotian's probably aren't the original inhabitants, but I bet it wasn't called "Nova Scotia" before they arrived either.

If a Mexican, and Italian, and an American move to Nova Scotia and bring their recipes with them, can what they cook be called uniquely Nova Scotian?

FTA: "I looked at the calendar and noticed immediately there is nobody in (there) that looks like me," said Beals.

Well the calendar featured food, Mr. Beals, did you recognize any food that you eat?

FTA: Select Nova Scotia is a "buy-local" marketing initiative.

They "put out a call for submissions" and then are attacked because the submissions they received weren't from more minorities? Did they somehow discriminate against minorities by asking people to submit stuff?

Canadians are too polite.

Quityerbiachin

They gave it some thought.
Even a little lip service.

They will try again.

You are right.  I see figures that have it at 93% white.  But, in all honesty, couldn't one of the months had a picture of someone holding a black baby?

And no captions of "mmmm tasty" either

boinkingbill: They should just sell the calendar with a bunch of colored markers.  That way everyone can color in the pictures to their liking.

The androgynous personification was invented for the same reasons we need a personification of indeterminate ethnicity.

Word for it?

Jument: Ron Beals - an African-Nova Scotian...

Congrats! That is the stupidest thing I've read all year. Unless Ron is from Africa, but I very much doubt it.

I think I will start referring to myself as a European-Canadian.

That is stupid. The preferred nonmenclature is "African-American-Nova-Sociatian"
