Falstaff: jst3p: doglover: jst3p: doglover: Rember these are sick people, sick in the head, not criminals.

Not all crime is caused by sickness. I find your argument less than compelling. My dad and both brothers spent time in San Quentin. They will even tell you that they are not sick, they were just selfish assholes.

Selfish assholism is a KIND of sick

Cerebral Ballsy: Take a drive over to WalMart and give that wall of disappeared kids a look-over. Note the ones who disappeared with some stranger they met online.

Now think, there's a far greater number of kids who meet a stranger online, invite them over, have sex (actually, get raped, since kids cannot legally give consent), and then never report the crime and instead suffer in silence thinking it was their fault for inviting a stranger over and promising sex.

not sure if serious

Kujira: Nix Nightbird: Oh, and by the way  subby, none of these guys appears to be a pedophile. They all seem to be ephebophiles. The youngest fake teen was still pretending to be a teen (13), and strictly speaking, "pedophile" describes those who are wrongly attracted to pre-pubescent children.

Does that distinction really matter so much? Are we so concerned about mislabeling those assholes?

Has nothing to do with mislabeling assholes. If people don't understand the definition of a word they shouldn't use it, otherwise they look stupid.

That's my main gripe with the US. No compassion. Even the allegedly conpassionate just want to punish and legislate at all costs. That's why we have "anti-smoking" but not "healthy-lung" groups. Everyone just wants someone they don't like in jail on the taxpayer dime. It's not good.

As a Frequent Flyer in the judicial system, I have to agree.

Goddamnit dl, leave it to you to be completely reasonable.

People just think I'm an idiot because I'm an idiot.

Wait...

No disrespect, because I think you are OK, but I find it hilarious that the guy white knighting people who try and have sex with minors is named "dog lover".

I don't into euphamisms. Love doesn't mean sex.

Anyway, I'm not defending pedophiles. I'm defending mentally weak and unstable victims of lazy police work under a misguided judicial philosophy. Maybe they are actually pedos, but I'd sooner eat my boots after tap dancing through a manure pile than take police at their word. There's a video of a cop shooting a dog that was growling at him after he kicked it in the head. No shiat, I'd growl at him, too.

Rev. Skarekroe: one man who brought a Happy Meal with him to meet what he thought was a girl between 12 and 14 years old.

What kind of 13 year old would eat a Happy Meal?

A hungry one?

The problem is, you're assuming the police are targeting random people until they get a bite. That's not how it works. Often, the police only got involved after a parent called them because some sicko was talking to their kid online. megarian's joke upthread could be mistaken for a quote from many of the chat logs I've read.

fusillade762: Sheriff Borders said the men were prowling Facebook and other websites that are popular among underage children.

Facebook is not popular with children.

And I love how they post the names and employers of everyone arrested even though they haven't been convicted yet.

I'm on the fence about this one, they did show up.

However, just once I'd like to see the full transcript of the chats involved. I think there was a story a few weeks ago about a Florida guy lured in by a 19 yr old girl. The transcripts that the guy provided showed that the girl was pushing for sex with  her underage sister and the guy was politely turning her down. He expressed no interest in the sister and still got popped when he showed up for the meet.

Seriously...why don't these guys just go to an escort service? I have a good friend that owns one (that I helped finance). He runs a complete background check on the workers, makes them get a medical report each month (he pays), and provides security. Some of the workers are as young as 20, but a couple of them could pass for 15. I have met most and all are happy with what they do. No problems, no hassle. The state should just legalize it, tax it, and regulate it. It is not going to go away. I am proud to say he is doing it the right way and not just pimping women out, but providing a service for both his workers and the clients.

Somewhere "all criminals are sick and should get help instead of locked up" and "all criminals are bad people and deserve to suffer" is these guys. I have no reason to believe it is closer to the former than the latter. What is your opinion?

jst3p: Nem Wan: This is legal in a majority of jurisdictions. Only 20 states have an age of consent higher than 16.

You might want to look a little closer. I believe most of the places where it is 16 and 17 have a "Romeo and Juliet" clause requiring that they be within 3 years of age. I am pretty sure a 35 year old banging a 16 year old is illegal in the majority of states.

I don't believe that's true... Any state with an actual age of consent of 16 means that they are able to consent to sex with anyone else at least as old, with no upper limit on age... (Some states do have separate heterosexual vs. homosexual ages of consent... Which is total unconstitutional bullshiat which will be overturned the first time anyone challenges it, I'm sure...) The "Romeo and Juliet" laws are all about cases were one party is under the state's age of consent, but the other party is within a certain number of years of age, so they consider it ok... But, they're not restrictions on top of the actual age of consent...

dletter: ....or concerned that there are that many legit 13 year olds trying to get 35 year old guys over for sex that the cop raid ones are low enough of odds for these guys to take the chance.

I know a guy who found a girl like that online. He was around 30 and she was 14. Talked online and after a while he went to fark her. I fell out of contact with that guy but the last that I heard he knocked her up. Never did get verification of that part one way or the other.

swingerofbirches: A problem in the US is that people think they will be convicted for something just by talking to a mental health worker (which is not the case, but it's a misconception).

The US in general has a huge stigma about mental health issues. People will look down on you hardcore for it as if you're a broken, insane beyond redemption person for seeking help with mental issues. It's sad. Just seeing a mental health professional is a long process and can take weeks to get an appointment. Which really is bad if a person is borderline suicidal or going through a bad depression. Mental services in this country is pathetic.

IIRC a mental health professional is obliged to call the authorities if they believe that a person is an immediate danger to someone else or themself. So, theoretically, if someone seeks help for attraction to an underage person if the person they go to is a "think of the children" pearl clutcher they might go overboard and consider them a rape happy predator and call the cops. Hopefully a professional is beyond that but children is a touchy subject to many people, understandable so. Hell, when fathers are scared to be the lone chaperone with their daughter and friends because of the potential of a life ruining false accusation it's understandable that someone might not want to bring up an innate attraction to sub 18 girls to anyone. If even they would never actually act on it.

I find it funny that decided to name those laws after a couple who were infamously fatally dysfunctional.
