czei: I've been sitting at home in Chapel Hill telecommuting most of the day since Dark Sky forecast a 90% chance of heavy snow starting at 12PM.  Can't figure out why people bothered to drive to work, only to flood the streets when it started to snow, insuring a huge traffic jam even if the roads weren't covered with snow.

Not to miss out on the fun I did venture forth in my 4WD rally car intending on finding a remote parking lot, but only narrowly missed getting hit by three SUVs in a row running a stop sign, and then immediately got stuck in a line of cars that couldn't make it up a 1% grade.

I don't mind staying in, but I have $200 tickets to see a concert in Durham and the Carolina Theater has a strict "no refund" policy, and while my car could make it in a mere 4" of snow, every since road between here and Durham is stopped dead.

Were you able to make it to the gym earlier? I know you didn't have much time to spare.

jj325: I'm supposed to fly out of Minneapolis tomorrow night into Raleigh/Durham. Not really counting on it happening.   Funny that when I booked the flight I was worried about getting out of Minnesota in February, not landing in NC.

/I know.  No one cares

Not true.  We all care.  We are caring people here at fark.  everyone knows that.

dumbandilikeit: It took my hubby over 3 hours to go 7 miles. And he's a mechanic so he couldn't really work from home.

Everyone was told that the snow would start at noon.  And it did.  But it stuck to the ground immediately and snowed at about 1" an hour.  Between noon and 4pm had over 6". Roads were even pre-treated.

So lots of people went in for a half day and then everyone left precisely at noon, right when the snow came down hard.

A real man would've walked barefoot both ways and carried his tool box with him, stopping along the way to help others.

The funny thing about the RDU area? It's mostly transplanted northerners who insist a little snow is no big deal where they're from. Enjoy your farking 20 mile walk in the snow idiots, but hey you're a total Internet badass because a little snow doesn't stop you from driving.

That's always made me chuckle when people hate on this area.  I'm not even saying the hate is misplaced or unfounded.  But it's usually sprinkled with the not at all subtle bashing of Southerners.  Then, when you start talking to your friends, co-workers and acquaintances, you realize that a large proportion (if not the majority) of people are transplants.

Guess what?  They're Southern by choice, by the grace of God through the intercession of air conditioning.

EasyWind: I was in this madness today.  16 miles in 5 hours!  I really wasn't that bad...except for the drivers.  The usual 4X4 enthusiasts with an invincibility complex piled up on the shoulders.

However, some of the 'Fast & Furious' fans abandoned their cars and walked since they could get zero traction.  That was priceless.

5 hours!?  Pfft.  I once drove a Ford Escort through 8 feet of snow to pick up a twelve pack of Michelob - the working-class man's high-class beer.  I could have driven that in 30 minutes tops playing REO Speedwagon on repeat.  #RidingTheStormOut #ChampaignRepresent
