Until recently, students at Bob Jones University who sought counseling for sex abuse were told not to report their claims because turning in a fellow fundamentalist would damage Jesus Christ, reported the New York Times.

Nice.  Same perverse mentality as the Catholic Church with regard to sexual crimes.

Here's a thought - when one of you commits sexual abuse, the damage to Jesus Christ is already done.  After that it's your duty to fix the damage that's already occurred.

Lying and covering up only furthers the damage you farkwits.

Unfortunately for the Party, Paterno was the Pope of Happy Valley. Infallible, a god among mere mortals. And just like so many Popes, he knew raping kids was way too inconvenient for his mystique, income, and comfort to ever do something so basic as deal with it.

If Jesus came bake to earth tomorrow he would smite every single evangelical to hell for all eternity. Without exception.
I mean if someone who truly followed Christ's teachings and had never herd of right wing Christians meet them they would probably think that right wing evangelicals were practicing some sort of anti-Christianity. Where you take the teachings of Jesus and do the opposite.

I love how these fundamentalists don't understand the fundamental nature of their own religions.  If you study any of the books of the Abrahamic religions it becomes quite clear that the only person responsible for your going to hell is yourself.  In fact, it could even be said that it's up to God if you're going to hell or not, since he has already determined and is aware of everything that will ever happen for the rest of time.  You aren't going to doom another to hell because you outed them for being a molester.  That suggests God is blind to what goes on down here, even though he repeats in the Bible and Quran many times that he knows all of our most secret thoughts.

It's also kind of ridiculous to think that any one person has the power to "Damage the Cause of Jesus Christ" by reporting a crime that is not only against man's law, but the law of God as well.

I'm pretty sure in this case "The Cause of Jesus Christ" means "Our Positions of Authority and Nice Retirement Packages."

If hell is real I'm sure the vast majority of its residents will be very surprised that they wound up there.  Those who claim to wield the moral authority of the church are often the worst offenders.

Ok ok, I can settle this very quickly.  Some please pass along the following to whoever is in charge of that place:

Leviticus 5:1 - If someone sins because he has heard a public call to testify and he is a witness or has seen or learned about it and he does not report it, then he will answer for his error

and in case they refuse to acknowledge that scripture "because it's Old Testament", follow up with:

1 Timothy 5:20-22 - Reprove before all onlookers persons who practice sin, that the rest also may have fear. 21 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the chosen angels to keep these things without prejudgment, doing nothing according to a biased leaning.  22 Never lay your hands hastily upon any man; neither be a sharer in the sins of others; preserve yourself chaste.

Failing that:

Matt 7:21-23 - Not everyone saying to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will. 22 Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many powerful works in your name?' 23 And yet then I will confess to them: I never knew YOU! Get away from me, YOU workers of lawlessness.

Few things provoke my outrage more than the stance that most religions take regarding abuse of followers by their spiritual leaders. Reporting your abuser damages Christ? Really? REALLY? How about this:

"Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

So yeah, to all pedo priests, pastors, reverends, ministers, etc... when you decide to get your jollies by raping and molesting  a child in your congregation, it's no different than if you had done it to Christ himself.

Molesting children isn't a sin, but making other Christians look bad by getting your name on the news for banging kids is. If people start to figure out that Christians really aren't any better than anybody else, they might start to lose faith in religion. If that happens, church attendance drops and donations go down. If donations go down, God's cut of the booty goes down. He lives a very expensive lifestyle and really needs that cash. Anything that can cut into that sweet, sweet revenue stream is the deadliest of deadly sins. Tithe until it hurts, people. God's new yacht isn't going to buy itself, and he needs a place to go relax after a hard day of smiting us with disasters as punishment for the gays.

tl;dr: Don't fark with God's money or you're going to Hell.

This girl I knew in high school went there.  She was about the nicest person you could meet, totally a hardcore Christian, didn't listen to any music harder that Amy Grant, churchgoer, etc.  When a bunch of us got together over Christmas break she told us all about it and it made my head spin.  You had to be in bed going to sleep by like 11:00, so no late night studying, chapel (i.e.) church was held M-F and you were only allowed to miss 2 per semester, Sunday church was mandatory and per the article only certain church's were allowed. Any dating had to be chaperoned. No TV's, VCR's (was the 90s) or radios allowed, that Amy Grant music she liked, not allowed that was to "hardcore", only hymns were allowed.  She was totally worried that someone would find out she went to this movie we all went to (some totally benign G rated animated one that I don't remember) as she could get in trouble for that even though she was home on break.

There was more stuff that I can't remember, but she was in constant fear of someone finding out about some benign thing she had done and then getting in trouble for it.  Again this is one of the most straight laced girls you would ever meet.  Totally blew my mind how she could handle all of that.

MY GOD, someone else who has read all the OZ books. My mom had all of the Baum books and most of the Ruth Thompson books when she was growing up and I read them as well when I was a kid. Some of Thompson's were favorites of mine including "Kabumpo in OZ" (my mom had a doll from her childhood she named Peg Amy). I loved Professor Woggle Bug too, always hoped to find that his knowledge and meal pills were real.

I think that The Shaggy Man was a kind of gentle version of Loki, but that's neither here nor there.
