M-G: Begoggle: Coast to Coast/Art Bell is for crazy people who aren't into FOX News.

No, those demographics merged a while back.  Half the crap that the Tea Party types rant about is stuff that I first heard on C2C in the '90s.

And usenet groups, those were some fun reads working the late shift in the campus computer lab.

I used to listen to Coast to Coast when I worked the night shift.  Crazy stuff.  There were some whacked out callers and episodes.  But I had a lot of fun with it.  It fit in PERFECT during the heyday of the X-Files.  Lots of Lone Gunmen types out there.

Krab: My favorite Coast to Coast AM moment was about ten years ago a Doctor Freeman called in about working at a lab named after a dark color flat hill top. They were working on portal tech and he was being followed by a man in a suit. It was pretty funny that the producer let to go on air.

God, that wold be so awesome... Of course, in the middle of the night, I might not be paying attention enough to catch it until halfway thru.

Most of the stuff you used to laugh about the coast to coast set about with big brother monitoring you is now proven to be true.

As far as Im concerned the "trust the establishment govt approved status quo" set are the mentally ill insane ones.

Was listening to C2C about 3 years ago, and i think it was Noory hosting, and he had a caller literally recite the plot of Half-Life to him, right down to Dr Breen's name. And either he was just listening and giving this guy his moment, or he really didn't know he was being trolled. I was quite honestly laughing my arse off when the guy was telling the story.

used to work in radio a lifetime ago.  I actually know John B Wells from his VO work.  At one time he was the voice in the promos for pretty much every Jacor (which eventually turned into Clear Channel) Rock radio station in the country.  The man made an ass-ton of money just for having a kick-ass voice.  He was always a little nutty too.

A little fun fact: Oliver Stone Loved John, if you watch the movie "Talk Radio" (When I worked in radio I always considered it a bit of a horror movie) John voices all the commercials, when they go to commercial break, you can hear his voice as Eric Bogosian takes off his headphones.  He (John) also played a newscaster in JFK.

Coast to Coast AM is awesome in a very trippy way.  I used to work at night and listen to the show on the hour-long journey back to the house.  Some nights, the people calling were just so ramped up and over-the-top that I would run from the car to the front door.  Crazy stuff

oldtaku: It's a weird thing to say but, I liked Art because he (mostly) kept some distance and critical thinking. He'd have some nutball on the show and he'd be saying things like "How interesting." "Wouldn't it be strange if this were true!"  And if you were paying attention you'd notice he usually kept from actually endorsing or affirming the reality of whatever whackass thing was being claimed and asked some probing questions.

The rest of the hosts are all super credulous gits who lob breathless softballs at the guests and are seemingly willing to believe anything and everything. Boring and stupid.

Yeah, I remember someone talking to him (might've been Hoagland or something) about supposed artificial/manufatured items found in rover images on Mars.  He had some pictures, and Art actually said something like, "Yeah, I keep looking but .. I see rocks."

Noory would have just been going "YEP!  OH WOW!  AMAZING!" for hours.

I worked with John in radio.  He's a supreme intellect and was a perfect compliment to the show.  His webcast should be quite interesting.

girlygirlmpls: Best Art Bell impression is done by Phil Hendrie. Funny and dead on. Best subscription money I have ever spent.

Phil Hendrie is hilarious - at least, the 6.2% of his show where he's doing voices and whatnot is hilarious. his show is about 82% aimless stream-of-consciousness rambling last time I heard it. (And yes, it's been a while...)

Liked Art's hot lines like if you were calling from Area 51 or were a time traveler.
One guy called and said he was flying a lighter than air craft toward Area 51 until he got too close and the transmission went dead. Never called back.

2014-02-12 04:29:03 PM

trotsky: Pelvic Splanchnic Ganglion: Art Bell's almost uncanny ability to jump head-first 100% into any nutball story that callers would bring up were what made his show awesome.  Not an ounce of incredulousness anywhere in his entire body.

The callers were best. The glory days of unscreened open lines were simply fantastic. You rolled the dice and hopefully got a crazy.

On one show, Ian Punnet was getting irked that the guests (Project Camelot and Serpo people) kept self-promoting and wouldn't about Aliens and stuff. So he made them talk to a nut who thought he was some sort of extraterrestrial angel. Punnet fed the guy as well and the whole call went on for like 10 minutes.

This. Unscreened open lines at 3am.

One of my sister's many ex-boyfriends collaborated in the perpetration of Mel's Hole. He even wrote a song about it.

Well... We... Goin' to the hole, to the hole in the medder,
To the hole in the cold dark ground,
We's goin' to the hole, to the hole in the medder,
Gonna throw ourselves right down.

We got us an Injun, he's a real Injun,
He's gonna find Mel's hole,
Got us an Injun, Honest Injun,
He ain't even on the dole.

Be... Cause... We... goin' to the hole, to the hole in the medder,
To the hole in the cold dark ground,
Goin' to the hole, to the hole in the medder,
Gonna throw ourselves right down.

There's about half a dozen more verses, but I'll be darned if I can remember 'em.

Coast to Coast Am under Art bell was great. Art had the ability to make even the most unbelievable stories somewhat interesting, or have an enthralling 4 hour conversation with the likes of Michio Kaku. He once banned the not so amazing Kreskin from the show for his asshattery too. George welcomes people of his ilk on with open arms... and seems to have a thing for having Alex "I never met a conspiracy theory I didn't believe" Jones on once a month, and go on without calling him out on anything.

And George almost died while eating pizza rolls.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1914eEHOZPw
