I used to listen to Coast to Coast when I worked midnight shifts back in the 90's, it was damn entertaining stuff.  While I haven't heard the show in years, I always suspected it went full on nutballs post 9/11. (It was always nutballs.) I see I was not wrong.

I also started listening to this show during the occasional times I would be working the perimeter of a prison what seems like ages ago, now.  There are some wild people out there, man.  I kind of liked Art, but George Noory or whatever didn't really sit well with me.

That post makes it sound like I'm an avid listener.  I don't really listen anymore, except once in a while, since I've no need for the background noise at that hour.

I get up at 3 am mst and I'm to work by 4. I have 20 min in the car. At that time of day, it's either c to c or bbc. I usually choose c to c. Because why not. I barely hear what's going on at that time anyway.

No mention of the Colonel with his wee beady eyes and that smug look on his face?

Same here, it made the overnight shift fly by.  The Chemtrail people were my favorite nuts.

Didn't know C2C and Johnny B had parted ways.

Really miss Art Bell and wish he'd stuck with Sirius as George Noorey seems more interested in religious mysteries than scientific mysteries.

Best shiat ever for midnight runs to the coast.

Me too. The funniest people to me were the ghost hunter types. They would play a recording that sounded like static and have a moan or something in it and call it proof. Always an entertaining show.

Now I kinda want fried chicken...but, not from KFC.  Their stuff is too salty and greasy and gross.

Best Art Bell impression is done by Phil Hendrie. Funny and dead on. Best subscription money I have ever spent.

Link won't load. So did Noory leave/get fired? I like how he treats respectfully the woman who calls in about how she's married to a Lizard Man (the kind that eat cars).

My favorite Coast to Coast AM moment was about ten years ago a Doctor Freeman called in about working at a lab named after a dark color flat hill top. They were working on portal tech and he was being followed by a man in a suit. It was pretty funny that the producer let to go on air.

No, one of the B Team hosts, John B Wells.

The only host worth a damn on there is George Knapp. He's great.

2014-02-12 03:16:22 PM
C2C started going down hill when Art left. Noory ran the show into the ground. John B. Wells only hosted on Saturdays but he was the only host I'd bother listening to. Yeah he could be kooky but he had "the voice." That gloomy, deep, gravelly, two-pack-a-day voice that added an extra creepy dimension to the show. Also, his topics were very similar to Art's topics.

2014-02-12 03:16:54 PM
I enjoyed John B. on C2C.  Nice contrast from Noory's nice guy act.  John used to also sprinkle in music trivia and history that was always quite interesting.

The spookiest call was the Area 51 worker who called in, talking about how the aliens were interdimensional beings, and then his phone link went dead.

Wknd host George Knapp is awesome. Not afraid to laugh at himself. Reads his listener emails on the air..even when they call him an "Asshat".

2014-02-12 03:18:34 PM
...and orbs, don't forget about the orbs.

Seriously, anytime I listened to that show, it seemed like somebody was calling in to talk about the illuminated orbs in their backyard.

Coast to Coast archives is better than anything they run these days, although I'd like to consult the reverse speech guy to see what Art really thinks.

One of my all-time favorite episodes was the interview with the guy who made rockets as a kid down by Dayton and ended up flying off to the desert to launch for the military.

Not just his phone, but the transformer that powered the station blew up too.
That was awesome. I really don't want to know the truth of that call, I prefer to believe my imagination.

/Too lazy to find the link.

Anything Hoagland is laughably bad. Art could handle that doofus wonderfully. Noorey lets him go and doesn't challenge him. Hoagie is absolute gold with Art at the wheel.

I used to leave my radio on at night as background to get to sleep. I'd have C2C on our local right-of-Jerry-Doyle Am station in the 90s, and it was great, semi-creepy semi-wonderful stuff to doze to.

I love C2C AM, but recently it has sucked. JBW is a nutcase, but an interesting one. I might subscribe to his C2M show, just for the high-grade insanity.

Who got fired? I stopped listening when George Nori came in to replace Art.  Art would call people on their BS and even kick them off the show if they kept on with BS that made zero sense to Art while George just listens to anything and says "facinating"... its ridiculous.

Please say George got fired.

It was definitely great for the ride back from the bar. I always liked how nonjudgmental Art was, allowing guests with mutual exclusive crazy theories to cobble some weird turducken theory together. It really was like that Simpsons with "the reverse vampires, in collaboration with the mole people and the Rand corporation..."

I'm reading a book on the US MiG squadron, and there was some very odd stuff going on there, just not what you think. For example, there was a guy in charge of maintaining the Soviet jets named Weird Harold who dressed up in women's clothing on the job, greeted an Admiral visiting from the Navy by running out wearing nothing but combat boots, a belt, and his cover, and he also would initiate new pilots with a variation of the old dick in a box joke. Apparently he was just too good at keeping foreign jets with sketchy documentation on limited replacement parts flying, so they had to overlook the weirdness.

It's also kind of funny, because they used Stealth fighter to help pay for the facilities for the MiGs, but at the same time the MiGs acted as a cover story for the F-117 pilots. A lot of pilots were trained against the MiGs as part of Red Flag, with those engagements being kept classified, so the MiGs became a really badly kept secret, so when the pilots said they were doing secret stuff at Tonopah, everyone just gave it a wink and a nod and assumed they were piloting MiGs.

Art Bell's almost uncanny ability to jump head-first 100% into any nutball story that callers would bring up were what made his show awesome.  Not an ounce of incredulousness anywhere in his entire body.

how does a farked up headline like that get greenlit?

2014-02-12 03:37:28 PM
I picked up an AM version of a DVR just to listen to Art Bell during the day. The man was just awesome at making boring stupid callers sound interesting. He had wonderful nut jobs being interviewed and as guests. He was so entertaining. I really quit listening to C2C when he left. I was considering getting a sat radio system when Art was going there, glad I didn't since he quickly left.

The Malachi Martin shows are awesome, and still bear re-listening. Of course, I grew up with a copy of his book The Jesuits on my coffee table, so I may not be a normal person ...

The callers were best. The glory days of unscreened open lines were simply fantastic. You rolled the dice and hopefully got a crazy.

On one show, Ian Punnet was getting irked that the guests (Project Camelot and Serpo people) kept self-promoting and wouldn't about Aliens and stuff. So he made them talk to a nut who thought he was some sort of extraterrestrial angel. Punnet fed the guy as well and the whole call went on for like 10 minutes.

2014-02-12 03:38:15 PM
It's a weird thing to say but, I liked Art because he (mostly) kept some distance and critical thinking. He'd have some nutball on the show and he'd be saying things like "How interesting." "Wouldn't it be strange if this were true!"  And if you were paying attention you'd notice he usually kept from actually endorsing or affirming the reality of whatever whackass thing was being claimed and asked some probing questions.

The rest of the hosts are all super credulous gits who lob breathless softballs at the guests and are seemingly willing to believe anything and everything. Boring and stupid.

No, those demographics merged a while back.  Half the crap that the Tea Party types rant about is stuff that I first heard on C2C in the '90s.
