AZ should try to do something about that.

stevarooni: Spirit Hammer: No person is illegal!

True fact!  But their status is that they are residing in the United States illegally, and they are aliens to the U.S. (i.e. non-citizens) and therefore "illegal aliens".

I wish everyone parroting that "no person is illegal!" line would try sneaking into another country, it doesn't even have to be so revere draconian, hell take your pick! See how well that goes.

Maybe try Mexico if you want to be on a level playing field in the context of this article.

So because a nation conquered a land as has been done countless times throughout history, they should just roll over and let another group conquer it back?

If I invade your home and set up shop, will you just let me?

They can't do it legally.  It's simply not possible.

So yeah, you can count yourself among those who just don't get the issue.

You are wrong. There is a process for everyone who wants to come here. On the other hand, if they're criminals, looking to escape justice in their own country, that may make it hard...

And the process is long and expensive for most cases.

Yeah, that's so we don't get overrun. How many countries are easier to immigrate to than the USA? Should we just keep letting anyone and everyone who wants to flow in until we're an overpopulated 3rd world shiathole?

dpzum1: ...sorry...should have said "income tax"

A huge percentage of poorer Americans (which tends to be your socioeconomic class when you don't have a SSN) don't pay income tax.  Like 99% of illegal immigrants probably wouldn't pay income taxes on what they're doing, so in terms of paying sales tax they're about the same as a poor documented American.

Most of the so-called "illegals" are people who entered the US legally and overstayed their visas.  So guess what?  They did "come in" legally.

So like every other criminal, they were legal until they broke the law.

They get it, but it doesn't help their cause, so they throw a bunch of FUD about racism and being anti-immigration instead of confronting that fact.

So if Canadians were coming into this country illegally in the same numbers as Hispanics do you think they would get the same sorts of treatment?

I should hope so. We don't see a lot of Canadians pouring in illegally though. For the most part Canadians seem to respect our laws, that and Canada is quite a nice place to live.

what_now: There's an awful lot of people here who think the problem is the guy who gets paid $3/hr to pick avocados, and not the guy who's paying him.

That same 1986 law makes it illegal for employers to hire illegals, and provides for fairly heavy fines. Maybe more enforcement is needed.

stevarooni: Maul555: I am a conservative libertarian, and this is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard...  I want secure borders, I hate the idea of amnesty, but even I want illegals to use the farking restrooms...

Yeah, you need to listen better (as did I).  As per the article:

House Bill 2192, authored by Rep. Carl Seel, would make it a crime - a serious misdemeanor on first offense, and a felony on second and subsequent offenses - for anyone who's in Arizona illegally to use any public resource.

So, no, not targeting restrooms by any means.

Damn, I got suckered by the headline. It's not nearly as ridiculous when not taken out of context. Still a waste of time IMO but I was led to believe it was legislation targeting bathrooms specifically.

2014-02-12 05:06:54 PM

tricycleracer: Much like the War on Drugs, the War on Immigrants has failed. Immigrants won.

There is no war on immigrants. There is a push to reduce the number of illegal immigrants, which is sensible and done by every civilized nation in the world.

More enforcement will never happen however, because there is big big money in having a permanent underclass of workers that don't need to paid a minimum wage or given any labor law protections.

Every single politician you hear railing against the "illegal immigrant problem" is blowing smoke up your ass. it's not a problem its a wedge issue that makes stupid people vote for him, and a campaign contribution from agribusiness.

I love the smell of of public toilets in the morning. You know, one time we had a porta-potty bombed for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one illegal alien. The smell, you know that outhouse smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory

Tough shiat. There are a few places I wouldn't mind immigrating to, but can't because I'm not skilled in a "needed profession" and/or because I don't have a significant amount of savings. Them's the breaks, bub.

/besides, the US is practically the easiest place to actually immigrate to in the whole damn world.

And what better way to get the law changed than by breaking it? Worked well when whatsherface sat her black ass down at the front of the bus, seems to be working well for the cannabis decrim movement.. try thinking of all the "illegal" immigrants as a systematic response to a law which offers them no redress but to break it, and when they reach a critical mass the laws will change.

The process is more geared to make money for the state department.

I am a natural born US citizen who also holds citizenship with Colombia and Panama.

I met my wife in Colombia and we were married.

I had to provide what amounted to a 50 page document with affidavits, letters, photos, emails, copies of phone bills, and a ton of other "evidence" to prove she is not a mail order bride.  Despite the proof that we were married and lived as man and wife in another country.  She had to go through a medical exam and an very personal interview to get into the country.  It took a year and a half about cost me about 6k total.  I was to the point of flying her to Puerto Rico and buying her a birth certificate there.

There are plenty of people who have the means, education, and work ethic to come over but they get the interview and are denied, but they are out of the fees.

I am all for legal immigration, but for the good people trying to come over the process is ridiculous.

And the Third Worldization of the US is not because of the immigrants, but the fault of the corporations and the almost non existent middle class these days.

The Third Worldization of the US is the logical extension of globalization...you are only worth the cost differential of producing whatever you make in the lowest cost location it can be made in. (E.g., Boeing jets can't be made in Guyana, but they CAN be made in China...) Hell, we might as well throw open the doors and allow everyone to live wherever they wish to.
