He thought he'd, in fact, be greeted as a liberator.

Liberators seem really underappreciated, as a rule.

Because the Republican party has been kissing their asses for going on half-a-century? Just spitballin'.

"I'm getting this monkey off your back and you're not going to even clap?" Boehner asked, scowling playfully at some tea-party favorites.

Scowling playfully?  Hmm.

Boehner had better watch out.  Any more of his shenanigans like this and people might start thinking government can get things done.

Sorry, John, but if you haven't figured out by now that the GOP is largely populated with self-entitled whiny little pricks who can't count, don't understand basic science, math and economics, and have a deep-seated hatred of anyone who doesn't worship the Rush God....then it's probably YOUR sanity we should be questioning..

Well more like his caucus has threatened multiple times to set the building on fire, been handed gasoline and a match, then mumbled and walled away.

If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.  It's not surprising that they are having problems with believing their own spin.

Well, there you have it, kids.  The GOP revolution is over and the grown-ups are making an effort to be in charge again.

It would seem that they're not completely retarded as they've managed to get off their asses and try to wrest control from the Derpers in February instead of July or August.  The problem with their expediency is that if they're not careful, the Derpers will work themselves up into a frenzy of self-righteous indignation and holier-than-thou fury at Conservatism being betrayed and all that and doing so well into the 2014 election season.

Well, I should say that this is a problem for the GOP, not the rest of us.

Honestly, i thought the fun of the 2012 election season wouldn't be beaten in my lifetime, but damn it, they're making serious effort in 2014, aren't they?

I kinda agree with them trying to get back control of the party, but if they can't either keep the # of seats or get more in the 2014 election, they're screwed because the crazies will come back shouting "YOU SEE! NO ONE LIKES YOUR RINONESS!!!!" and will take total control before imploding and falling into the sea

In 1979 after some debt limit brinkmanship the treasury missed interest payment on $120m in t-notes.  This caused the government billions in higher interest even though the payments were quickly made once the mistake was realized.  Now these financial wizards think the path fiscal nirvana is to pass a budget, vote for taxes that don't cover the budget and then refuse to cover your debt. Brilliant

So, let me get this straight.  Even though we do this every 6 months now, no one has thought to maybe fix the underlying problem of not spending so much so that we have to borrow so that we can meet our obligations from spending so much that we have to borrow to meet?

Ok then.  Carry on.

The debt ceiling is raised so we can borrow to pay for the things we already agreed to pay for.  That's what all the libs keep saying.  So, call me crazy here, but if we stop agreeing to pay for things over what we are already spending...we won't need to raise the debt ceiling to borrow to pay for these things we didn't buy.

I'm not even talking about default, or not raising the debt ceiling.  If we'd done this 4 years ago, we wouldn't be talking about it now.  If we do it now, we won't be talking about it in 6 months...or a year...or 4 years from now.

Well since spending cuts aren't going to get us all the way there (you could eliminate the entire discretionary budget and still not balance the books we will need to at some point raise taxes.  We could do that if one party wasn't so completely obsessed with "NOT RAISING TAXES EVER OMG! IF WE DO WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!"

I will leave it as an exercise to the reader as to which party that is.

Chris Ween:

No I would prefer a sensible solution where we cut spending and raise taxes to balance the budget.  That is the deal Obama offered Boehner before he decided to accede to the wishes of the Tea party.

If you are pissed that we don't have a balanced budget your anger should be directed at the group that is currently most responsible for that:  intransigent congressional republicans.

TerminalEchoes: Oh look. Someone who thinks it's perfectly okay for America to have debt to begin with!

that's not what's argued here and you'll find quite a few of us here who are "libby lib libs" agree with you that we need to cut down on spending, but the debt ceiling is not that. Cutting down on spending does not mean we don't have to raise the debt ceiling.

I doubt its going to come up in any serious sense anymore.  The Republicans have gotten their asses handed to them so badly on this issue they cooler heads will prefer.  And the money-men behind the party aren't going to let them sink the global economy for giggles.  The teatarded part of our population will complain bitterly (but honestly they complain bitterly about everything), but they will be correctly ignored.
