Nothing about this headline is good. I don't get Greta Gerwig. Frances Ha was an insufferable film.

Spinoffs often bomb, but I'll give it a shot.  HIMYM is at least consistently entertaining, even if it's fallen off slightly in the last couple seasons.

With the spinoff rumors I was hoping it would star Cristin Milioti, the girl playing 'the mother', as she's pretty delightful, but I can see how that would be problematic to start again in the past and do the parallel story from a writing perspective.

I remember the day when spinoffs used to be special and would only occasionally root like Rhoda Dendron.

Spinoffs are still rare. What spinoffs have there been in the last 10 years. Private Practice and Joey?

Major Crimes spun off from The Closer and has been good.  Doctor Who begat Torchwood, Stargate SG1 led to Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, Battlestar Gallactica had Caprica, and I'm sure I'm missing others that were fairly recent.

Hm I guess your right. Hadn't thought of those.

Anyways, this spinoff will clearly fail. The only spinoffs which ever succeed are either procedurals or spinoffs which are really different from the originals (like Frasier or Laverne and Shirley). This sounds like its literally same the same show with some characters swapped out. That's not going to work, since what made HIMYM great wasn't the premise. You can't just copy a premise and hope for success.

Nicely done, subby the second half of that sentence directly mirrored my thoughts when reading the first half.

I thought this final season WAS the spinoff!

Wow, this sounds awful, just awful. I don't want to watch a show about a chick banging her way through NY's night life of douchenozzels and guidos. Also, from a distinctly female point of view? Soooo, the comedy is all going to revolve around guys having small dicks/wallets/prospects as a reason they weren't "the one." They had that show already, it was called "Sex and the City."

Truly awful show that should have been called "And You Thought Friends Sucked?" It has a following though so why not a spinoff.

2014-02-12 05:00:35 AM
I like How I Met Your Mother.  But this spinoff sounds like just as lame of an idea as the all-female version of the Expendables that's being made.

Gender-swapped versions of successful franchises are rarely good.

CSI: Small Town in Nebraska, NCIS, L&O are the first things that spring to mind.

Given that Carter Bays has crammed four seasons worth of storyline into eight seasons already I'm sure that barrel has lots of stuff left to scrape.

Came to make a 'They're remaking Sex and the City' again? comment and was beaten to it.  HIMYM is at least mildly entertaining - but I'm very skeptical of HIMYD.

/Angel is the only spinoff I've ever seen that is at least somewhat as entertaining as the original
//I've never seen any of the Stargate series so back off

Make that nine season.  But the current season of the show isn't the fault of the creators.  They  wanted to end the show with season 8, but the network ordered another season because the show still gets good ratings, and the creators couldn't say no because of contractual obligations.

And as it turned out, that 9th season has redeemed the show. This season is better than the last 2 or 3 seasons. The original plan was to only meet The Mother in the final episode, because apparently they thought people were interested in bland filler rather than meeting the character we've been waiting for since episode one. Instead, we've gotten to know her over the course of a season, and I like that we've been able to see her meet everyone else before Ted. Plus, the episode that showed her backstory was amazing. As long as they don't pull a Lost or BSG or Smallville, and instead stick the landing, this last season will be ranked among the great final seasons of shows.

I'm iffy about the spin-off, of course, because I have a feeling it will be feel like Community Season 4 or Scrubs season 9. (Or HIMYM seasons 6-8)  It's going to try to hard to repeat past success rather than develop a voice of its own and go in a new direction. Someone upthread references That 80's Show, and that's an apt comparison.

I really like Cristin. It would be great if they cast her. Perhaps as part of Greta's friend group.

There's an even better comparison for this potential disaster:

Was she even IN the show?  Spin-offs usually include some character (regular or recurring).  I don't recognize her from anywhere and you'd think the article might have mentioned how she fits into the existing story line.  This sounds more like a "same universe" kind of show like "The Finder" was (the character appeared in "Bones" solely to introduce it for its pilot)

2014-02-12 11:44:24 AM
I am not a regular watcher of the show, but, from the articles I've read, this actress isn't the actress that will be the revealed "mother" on HIMYM.   I am confused then, is this going to be a "spinoff" in that it is going to be HIMYM's "story" from the mother's life's side,  or it is just a "similar story" from a woman's side... which then, I barely consider the word "spinoff" as accurate.

If you hit the CBS website for streaming, you'll see there was no new episode this week.  Last week's episode (Feb 3) is the most recent (Ted & Robin on the beach, Barney gives bro lessons to the 2 young guys he runs into while shiatfaced drunk, Marshall has conversations with Ghost Lily)

That 80's show was the first thing that came to mind.  They didn't share a character or a theme with that 70's show, but rather just copied the slimmest of concepts, and thought people would like it.  What kind of idiotic committee thinking leads one to believe that what made that 70's show popular was the decade setting?  The same kind of idiotic committee thinking that leads one to believe HIMYM was successful because of how it's narrated from the future.
