If you never get earthquakes, it's news.

An inch of snow in MA would not be news. In Honolulu, yes.

Is FEMA warming up the go teams?  Has the Red Cross announced any collection points for food, water, clothing, and cash? Are urban search and rescue teams on scene to rescue survivors from the rubble?

Isn't a 2.4 what regular people call a tremor, but, since it was on the East Coast, now it's an "earthquake".  No wait, a "major earthquake".

A 2.4 is news in Moodus if it makes the noises again.

Even odds on a "big", say M6+ quake in the East/Midwest and a volcano in the West lower 48 happening first.

It's been an off century...

The strongest to hit Massachusetts was a 5.9 in 1755 (weeks before the great quake/tsunami that destroyed Lisbon). This is a depiction of the earthquake:
www.nesec.org

/since a lot of Boston is built on reclaimed land (think San Francisco's Marina District during the Loma Prieta quake), a repeat of the Cape Ann quake could be much, much worse.
//those two centered near NYC are also somewhat troublesome

The USGS doesn't even report anything below 2.5, but just today there was a 2.8 in Texas, a 2.5 in Kansas, a  3.5 in. Montana, a 3.0 in Oklahoma.  And of course lots in California and Alaska, and all around the world.

So no, a 2.4 isn't news even if it hits somewhere that "isn't used to earthquakes".

And a 2.6 on the coast of North Carolina, where it's more unusual than Massachusetts.

California will never fall into the ocean, the east coast sucks way to hard for that to happen.

It is news, which is why there are news articles for all those quakes you just mentioned. Are you confusing what shows up on fark as a good way of what constitutes news?

Yeah, I've never seen the attraction to SB either. I like it right where I am. I live in a town of about 1200 people, and there are only about 125000 in the entire county. A crowded day at the beach means you're sharing a vast expanse of sand and sea with a dozen or so other people.

You can actually feel a 2.4 in New England, thanks to its geology.  It might even knock some poorly-balanced items off shelves.  If it made the news, then it's as a "hey, that happened, isn't that odd" piece.
