I want a targeting reticule, and wireless link to my weapon gun sight. A range to target and wind direction/speed app would be a nice bonus, as would an ammo counter and maybe some basic tactical maps of my location. Ooh...and a real time link to an overhead drone would be awesome too!

Honestly, we really are turning into shadowrun kind of world.

There are teaching applications for it as well.  Being able to see through the eyes of a person and direct them, or even just to quickly review what their study habits are, etc, could be a pretty powerful tool for teachers.

Not to mention the uses that a nightmarish corporate overlord could come up with to track employees activities

I'm not really in the "Someone wearing Google Glass looks like a douche camp'. it seems petty and envious. Of course, it's the same thing with BT headsets, I don't think someone looks like a ouche because they wear one, it make me comfortable if they're getting in a car.

It's how people ACT with these devices that pisses me off, but apparently judging people on their actions isn't what you would call 'chic', especially on Fark, home of the patented Fark Snark ®.

The Glass has some good applications in the sports world, I think, especially in sports where accuracy and hand-eye coordination is important. For instance, bowling. I saw pro bowler Jason Belmonte (the douche who rolls two-handed, but we'll ignore that part for now) wearing the Glass on a broadcast; there's a video up on YouTube showing him roll a 300 game from his point of view.

I could definitely see the benefit for practicing while wearing one of those. It lets you review your shots, getting an excellent view of your mark and the ball's movement, while also getting almost immediate feedback on how level you are keeping your head during your approach. That's far better than a simple behind-you camera view (though rear and side views are still useful for improving body form and footwork).

I could see it be useful for other sports like baseball, football (quarterback practice at least), or tennis. Not so useful for golf or soccer, though. Curling could be fun but I don't think having a curler's eye view is all that useful for review.

I see the idea as useful for a log of applications.  But the current execution sucks and I don't see your average person begging to wear glasses.  Some of us spent thousands to get rid of wearing them.

I helped build that in early 00s. Apparently when field tested, soldiers thought it bulky, heavy, hot, and difficult to visualize at the same time as they were walking. No ammo counter though as I recall. Later versions maybe. I think they were all shiatcanned, and I bet the Army still wants it.

I don't know. One problem was we had were the components we were forced to use. So our "keyboard" was this thing about the size and weight of an external disk drive that was mounted on your chest and that had a joystick which was used to pick at a virtual keyboard appearing in the eye piece. But I think what really nuked it was the eyepiece itself which even in the lab was small and hard to see through and made me sweat. And it wasn't an eyepiece like google glass, it was in fact a very small monitor mounted on a hinge on a helmet and the soldier was intended to walk while using one eye to see the landscape and the other eye to watch the monitor.  Add batteries for a day in the field and I think it was 18 pounds with tons of cables.

Interesting project but it always seemed 3 complete redesigns away from being useful.

Apparently the entire project really and truly was created when some general saw the tv camera monitor thingies from Aliens.

The last I heard of it was  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Force_Warrior but I think that was canceled too, though I am sure it is still alive in various forms and new contracts. Hard to kill off stuff like that.

Oh yeah, I always felt the problem was that the Army had contracted with General Dynamics and military contractors and ended up with these 2003 era milspec smartphone like thingies that weighed 18 pounds and were impossible to use and cost $50,000 per soldier and they really and truly should have gone to Nokia, Palm (this was before Apple had jumped in), and just bought a shiatload of $500 phones maybe with different more military friendly radios and military apps and roms. GD didn't have a clue.

My work involves getting pricing data delivered to my phone. Google Glass and a ring scanner might double or triple my speed, provided the BT stack doesn't bog down. On the iPhone 5 I can't run a BT keyboard and stereo BT headphones.

Just like it is illegal to record sound from a 2 party conversation ( either live or phone call ) without the 2nd party's permission; I can see laws passed which will nullify use of Googleglass for facial recognition in real time... what, you want to serve me subpoena papers... I'm not Joe Blow... or of course, the politician being caught in the Pr0n theater, bathroom stall or at the hoar-haus...

even worse, invasion of privacy in areas already deemed to be private by law/ court ruling/ etc... for example within a house/ office or building which is owned by the 2nd party... and  of course, when minors are involved, especially when clothing/ dress are such that sexual deviancy can be alleged... so no Voyeurs at the swimming pool, play ground or school.

And we have already seen legal run-ins with copyrighted public showing of movie/ theatre; and while driving distracted with a glass device on your face!

Glasshole #345309's glass meanwhile is instantly uploaded to mother google's data aggregation system that makes certain other laughably notorious ones look like playtoys, its then processed and dissected to extract as much metadata that can be leveraged for current and future monitization as possible before being stored forever in case they'd like to reprocess it to extract even more.  That whole system has no accountability to your privacy and never will, its entire purpose is to make money and couldn't give a rat's ass who's lives are being sold to whom, just what it'll earn by doing so.

These are both exaggerations, maybe.

I think I recently saw a Kickstarter for a set of AR glasses that would put a transparent overlay on your normal field of view, and wouldn't involve 18 pounds of stuff to carry.  The Kickstarter talked about use cases such as zombie LARP'ing (although they didn't use the word "LARP"), but it looked like it could be programmed for military applications as well.

// now the data processing/prediction point, not quite there yet ... though I do recall a demo from a search tech company about a decade ago where they were automatically reading license plates and putting it into their DB along with the video, so that you could do a search for all the times that Lic. Foo and Lic. Bar were in a specific area (company parking lot) at the same time ... and bring up the video clips of these events.

I would imagine that given enough cameras and storage, along with technological improvements in processing (facial recognition, etc), this could be expanded exponentially.

EX, are there any people who visit our city around the same timeframe ... yes Bob and Joe

OK, we have a video feed from the airport that shows bob getting into a vehicle Lic. Foo. That license is a rental vehicle.
And Joe gets into vehicle Bar.

OK, are vehicle foo and bar ever in close proximity after that.

Yes, at the Baz house of Jazz.

Ok then, do we have any video of the Baz house of Jazz, and if so, did it see Bob and Joe enter?

etc etc etc
