No

I can do it with just a quarter.  Slip it under the pull tab, and lift up.

Not like it shows in the video you can't.

How big a magnet?

2014-02-11 04:07:07 PM
I can open beer with my bare hands. Hell, bare *hand* in a pinch.

This, like so many other questions, can be answered with 'Yes, if you hit it hard enough.'

2014-02-11 05:08:37 PM
I guess it's possible. After all, we don't know how magnets work.

2014-02-11 05:14:31 PM
No.

And let me just say that I wasn't the one silly enough to try it. I was just the witness.

Well, if it's essentially already open, you can tap the side with a quarter to build enough pressure to lift the cap off. You can also add a magnet in to distract the gullible.

Some fishing line, a bottle opening sound effect and some fake GCI smoke and...voilà.

But without the fakery?

Well...I suppose one could. Other than by using the quarter and/or magnet to just physically pry off the cap with your hands.

Step 1) magnetize quarter
Step 2) get a really powerful magnet
Step 3) Place the magnet in such a way that magnetism applied towards the quarter would physically pry off the cap

An incredible waste of time, but I suppose it could be done. Just not in the stupid way shown.

Get back to me after you've accomplished step 1.  I'll expect a result sometime around the heat death of the universe.

show me: CAN'T

Oh, come on now. There's absolutely no way to magnetize a quarter? Even by melting it down, changing the metallic structure of the quarter and then re-molding it or stamping it into its original shape?

no, not unless you've figured out how to transmute copper into iron and if you have then I'd go with the old standby of lead into gold, it'll make you more in the long run that playing with magnets.

How about: "Hey, dude, I'll give you a quarter if you open this beer for me"?  Then just keep the magnet.

If I'm at a location that has both beer and magnets, I bet there's something else around that I can use to open my beer.

But modern quarters are 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel. Nickel is magnetic.

SO THERE.

I have three elemental words for you: iron, nickle, cobalt.
Hint: US quarters don't use these element.
Hint: Vending machines have magnets.

Slide the quarter under the pull tab, slide the magnet under the quarter, pull up.

Combine quarter with 19 others, go to self check-out at grocery with 6-pack of cheap beer.
