FTA:  "Many of the explorers do not even take the precaution of wearing a helmet."

I'm all in favor of basic safety precautions, but if you take a header off a three hundred foot antenna, a helmet will only be useful for scooping up your remains.

Yeah because when you are falling thousands of feet a helmet isn't going to help much.

Russians are some crazy-assed mo-fo's.

I'm glad I'm not young. I was just crazy/stupid enough to do this stuff. We did climb radio towers and let waves chase us during hurricanes. Amazing we are still alive, some of us.

I didn't even notice the furry head (a cap, I'm assuming)...all I noticed is that it's like 5,000 friggin feet straight down to the roadway.

Came to say this.  the helmet would provide a convenient carrying case after your whole body is squished into it after the 1000 foot fall.

Here is a fun calculator for anyone who has fallen from a dangerous height, as I have.  (35 feet.  Walked away, but I was 13 years old and made of rubber.  I now pay dearly for that mistake - two back surgeries in the last three years.)

I appreciate exaggeration, but it says right there that it's 443 feet.  To the ground or the roadway I dunno.

And that is an experience that should never be denied to those willing to take the risk. Sometimes I feel like weeping for my generation and the ones to follow...

Taking this picture was dangerous in more ways than one. The clock that Kirill Vselensky's face is emerging from is located across the street from the main KGB building in Minsk, Belarus.

Nice. Awesome pictures, life experience, exploring the unknown, and facing danger. All the things people should be about. People who wet their panties over the danger aspect should be ashamed.

Oh, all right then. Long as you've got a helmet.

2014-02-11 03:06:59 PM
A helmet isn't going to save you when you fall several hundred feet but it can when the pipe you grabbed onto turns out to be rusted through and falls on your head. Or when you're in a poorly lit space and you run into a beam at head level that you didn't notice. Or a thousand other scenarios.

Exactly.  Without a helmut: KOed and fall thousands of feet to your death.  With a helmut: Hear a loud "clunk".

Years ago, I played a wedding service for a young couple. She had a three-year-old from a prior relationship who just adored his new daddy. Two months later, I got a call from the same planner, asking if I could play all the same music again, this time for a funeral. He and some buddies decided to go urban exploring, and he fell off the top of a grain elevator. Tragic. Ya just never know. A helmet wouldn't have helped, but a safety harness might have.

That's called the Elephant's Foot.  When the reactor fuel melted it poured down the inside of a huge pipe and oozed into that shape.  That's suit he's wearing can offer no protection from radiation, all it does is keep the dust off him so they don't have to scrub his skin off when he's done for the day.

Not that the USA is immune to boneheaded errors, but don't the Russians seem to have a certain way of REAAAALLLLLYYY farking shiat up? There just seems to be a certain coldness to the culture. I am sure there are lovely Russians and positive elements, but from all accounts, it just seems like a desolate place full of despair.
