Bob Costas going away is never a bad thing.

Costas is a 5'2" jock-sniffer who thinks he has a grasp of philosophy.

Well good because its seemed that Costas has been on a one-man mission to re-start the Cold War.

"Reluctantly, I was trying to throw a complete game here, but I think we're going to have to go to the bullpen, and I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but you're Mariano Rivera, at least tonight,"

Y'know, being completely unable to turn off your sportscaster voice must be pretty awful for everyone he interacts with on a daily basis.

THIS

Watching the Olympics with friends last weekend, and as soon as BC's face appeared we all groaned.
How does that grim joyless gnome keep any broadcasting job? He's no fun, at all.

/bud thinks BC must have pictures of the head of NBC with a goat...
//not fond of Matt 'gee I didn't notice my wife was ill' Lauer either - he's a meathead too.
///Hey NBC, bring in Dorothy Hamill, Kristi Yamaguchi etc. as Olympic announcers!

Somewhere along the line someone decided that Bob Costas is a 'broadcasting legend', whose has the voice of a generation.  I personally detest him, because it's like watching a poor William Shatner impersonation mixed with the ego of TIm Robbins.

Costas has an ego, but he calls about as good a baseball game for a national level broadcaster as you could ask for these days.  Obviously there are local broadcasters that are better, like Scully and such, but other than Vasgersian, I'm not sure if any other game of the week type broadcasters are at his level.  Of course, when the competition is Joe Buck, it's not like the bar is terribly high

And this isn't a baseball game, nor are the interviews he's asked to conduct.

Far Cough: why all the gnashing against Costas?

Because he is one of the douchiest douchebags to ever douche. I would have thought his melodramatic "complete game" speech would have made it pretty damn obvious.

ladodger34: When has this happened? His gun control rant was after Jovan Belcher's suicide and that was at least related to the NFL. What other rants has he had that were unrelated?

//seriuosly interested, not trying to white knight the guy.

So was his rant on the Redskins and the Redskins one actually had more relevance (actual topic at hand), but even if the topic is related he is politicizing something that (I feel) is not his place.  He could have gone after the NFL about the concussion history of Belcher (which would have been more on point than a gun control rant).

He could go off about mental health and how the NFL hides their responsibility for long-term safety of its players, but that would go against the NFL, and he can't do that.    The idea that someone won't kill someone because they don't have a gun is silly, especially when you are talking about someone as strong as an NFL player.  As someone else pointed out, if OJ didn't have a gun, would Nicole Simpson still be alive?

Sports for some are an escape from the day to day stuff we all deal with.  It is a few hours where we root for a team that we support for one silly reason or another.  Sports are supposed to be fun.  Sports are supposed to be an escape.  If I wanted politics I'd listen to Rush or Olbermann.

//you might have me on them being related, but I still find it off-putting.

The thing that bothers me about Costas is that he seems to feel carte blanche to use the MNF halftime to give a rant on whatever he feels.  I watch sports for sports.  I would hope that sports would be one place where the politics don't matter.  Of course based on this Olympics and the statements of Putin that is hard, but when the Packers are playing the Bears I want to hear about what happened in the first half, not whatever it is that has a bug up Costas' ass that week.

//Same goes for singers.

freakay: Jim McKay is rolling in his grave.  Back when ABC covered the games they actually covered the entire Olympics, on one channel, with old school sports broadcasters.

That meant you had people like Chris Shenkel doing skiing, or Kieth Jackson doing bobsledding, or Howard Cossell doing speed skating.  And when you watched them, wearing the ugliest tan sport jackets possible, you knew damn well that after filming those guys were going to go out and get liquored up at the local pub/bar/beer house.

Now it has all been ruined for our kids, with an emphasis on figure skating and other more crowd friendly events.  Its a disgrace.

However...why isn't Al Michaels taking over?

Not going to defend NBC too much here, because they could just put events on all of their cable outlets with little fanfare and people would watch. It's foolish not to have apps on every platform available, etc.

But the crap on NBC is done the same way that McCay did it. Tape delayed with human interest stories. Dick Ebersol is a Roone Arledge protege.

FFS, the vast majority of the country watched The Miracle on Ice on tape delay, despite it being in the US.

Far Cough: Private_Citizen: I don't get all the hate on Bob Costas. He's a really good person who helps many children with his charities (Bob Costas center, etc).

He knows a ton about sports, and is a great interviewer. The interview he did with Sandusky ended that dude.

Still, his eyes have looked bad over the past couple of days, so I hope he gets over the Sochi Stinkeye fast.

Me neither.  I  can't judge since I don't watch sports, but he always seemed smart and easy going. (Used to come off like a puppy dog.)   Maybe that's changed.

I always thought he was easy going also, then I saw that Sandusky interview. You can actually hear when Bob realizes "holy moly, this guy is guilty!". Then Costas absolutely Grills him. It was nice to see old school, hardball journalism.

/seems like reporters today don't want to offend anyone because it could limit their interview prospects.

Oh, great.  The last time Matt Lauer had the big chair, he showed up for with without his socks.  Somehow, seeing him in dress shoes without socks sent me into the deepest rage I've ever felt toward a television personality.

This time around I'm getting my Olympic coverage via the BBC.  No thanks, NBC boneheads.  We're through.

There was a question posed recently of whose secret archives you would want to look through, and my first thought is always CIA, Mafia, KGB, etc. Really though, I think it would be the anybody who has no business doing the job they are doing, just to find all the dirt they have on the world.

I like to watch the olympics.

even with all the malarky and potential politics involved.

I love the competition and potential mayhem and the collapsing athletes working much harder than I ever will for anything.

Yet.

every 2 years I develop an unbridled disdain for Bob Costas.

more than disdain,

hate . . . yes . . . I hate Bob Costas during the Olympics.

there, I said it.

then it calms, and subsides and vanishes.
