Wouldn't the guy staning in for him be like a middle reliever? If we are to go with the baseball reference, Bob Costa would be like the starter that got torched for 5 runs in the first inning and taken out of the game. Closer would be if this happend on the last 2 days of Olympics, not the first 2.

Costas, who does not normally wear glasses, has been sporting a pair since the beginning of the Sochi Games due to an infection that started in his left eye and has now spread to his right eye.

A friend of mind has the same doctor. He broke his collarbone and wrist last summer, he had to wear cuff links and a bow tie for 3 months. He's better now.

I've been wondering if he arrived with that or he got it there. You have to worry (if it's really pink-eye) about everyone else that he's come into contact with, getting it now. Also, they should wash all the stuff he's been using on the set.

If it's not pink-eye, good lord I hope they can fly in the good neosporin and kill that and get him on the mend. You do not want to mess around with that. Sadly, I learned I was allergic to neosporin when they gave it to me for pink-eye. That was NOT fun...

I like to watch the olympics.

even with all the malarky and potential politics involved.

I love the competition and potential mayhem and the collapsing athletes working much harder than I ever will for anything.

Yet.

every 2 years I develop an unbridled disdain for Bob Costas.

more than disdain,

hate . . . yes . . . I hate Bob Costas during the Olympics.

there, I said it.

then it calms, and subsides and vanishes.

"Reluctantly, I was trying to throw a complete game here, but I think we're going to have to go to the bullpen, and I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but you're Mariano Rivera, at least tonight," Costas told Lauer by phone.

There was a question posed recently of whose secret archives you would want to look through, and my first thought is always CIA, Mafia, KGB, etc. Really though, I think it would be the anybody who has no business doing the job they are doing, just to find all the dirt they have on the world.

Nothing can top the joylessness of Costas's "showboating" rant from a few years ago.

I don't get all the hate on Bob Costas. He's a really good person who helps many children with his charities (Bob Costas center, etc).

He knows a ton about sports, and is a great interviewer. The interview he did with Sandusky ended that dude.

Still, his eyes have looked bad over the past couple of days, so I hope he gets over the Sochi Stinkeye fast.

2014-02-11 01:07:31 PM
Jim McKay is rolling in his grave.  Back when ABC covered the games they actually covered the entire Olympics, on one channel, with old school sports broadcasters.

That meant you had people like Chris Shenkel doing skiing, or Kieth Jackson doing bobsledding, or Howard Cossell doing speed skating.  And when you watched them, wearing the ugliest tan sport jackets possible, you knew damn well that after filming those guys were going to go out and get liquored up at the local pub/bar/beer house.

Now it has all been ruined for our kids, with an emphasis on figure skating and other more crowd friendly events.  Its a disgrace.

However...why isn't Al Michaels taking over?

Oh, okay.  I guess it's intended to limit his infecting of others, but the only practical way to keep his hands out of his eyes are wide coverage goggles, such as woodworking goggles.  Which, let's face it, would LOOK AWESOME on the TV.  He should have gone that way.

I grew up where Columbus, OH, where interactive-cable TV was born. It rolled out in 1977 so that I was the age when it was invested in by AMEX and it became a household thing around there. 30 channels and feedback from your button pushes was future stuff in your living room.

If you pressed all three buttons at the bottom at the same time, it would randomly tune into one of the premium channels.

Mode101: Bob Costas go away. Commentators politicizing an event that is supposed to be non-political go away. NBC focusing on just a few sports and shoving them in our faces with lame stories, go away.

Its time for a new station. I am ready for Fox Olympics! Anything has to be better.

Bye.

Okay, I'm flying blind here but... first, based on what nelsonal said, Costas talked about gun control on Sunday football, not the Olympics. So, second, has Costas in any other way talked politics out of turn during Olympics coverage?  Third, the modern Olympics has been political from the very beginning.  It's impossible to avoid when you're literally pitting countries against one another.  Fourth, an independent press is a nice thing to have.

So, fifth, why all the gnashing against Costas?  Is it just kneejerking because people think he's outed himself as a filthy liberal and must be expunged from view?  'Cause, sixth, that's what it sounds like.

And oh yeah, seventh, it's currently moot if philandering old Matt has replaced him.

Somewhere along the line someone decided that Bob Costas is a 'broadcasting legend', whose has the voice of a generation.  I personally detest him, because it's like watching a poor William Shatner impersonation mixed with the ego of TIm Robbins.

2014-02-11 04:14:11 PM

freakay: Jim McKay is rolling in his grave.

Not going to defend NBC too much here, because they could just put events on all of their cable outlets with little fanfare and people would watch. It's foolish not to have apps on every platform available, etc.

But the crap on NBC is done the same way that McCay did it. Tape delayed with human interest stories. Dick Ebersol is a Roone Arledge protege.

FFS, the vast majority of the country watched The Miracle on Ice on tape delay, despite it being in the US.

The thing that bothers me about Costas is that he seems to feel carte blanche to use the MNF halftime to give a rant on whatever he feels.  I watch sports for sports.  I would hope that sports would be one place where the politics don't matter.  Of course based on this Olympics and the statements of Putin that is hard, but when the Packers are playing the Bears I want to hear about what happened in the first half, not whatever it is that has a bug up Costas' ass that week.

That's because of the time of day that the game was.  Russia refused to agree to move the time of the game so it was played in the morning or early afternoon IIRC.

My biggest complaint is that people whine about the 'olympics show' when that's kind of the way it has always been.

I think in this day and age, NBC should have an app on game consoles, dvrs, and other streaming devices. We need to stop whining about the primetime 'show' they produce everynight.

on today's DP show, the fill-ins / Danettes were joking that DP was passed over because he just won some big award and wondered if Costas didn't want to give one of all of sports' marquee events to DP.

while they were joking, i think they were being somewhat sincere.  DP is already there.  He's already built a solid resume.  He does SNF.  it does seem weird.

on the other hand, DP is a sports guy's sports guy, and as shown by all the vignettes (my 2014 resolution?  pronounce this word as "vig-netties") the prime time olympics is not about sports, but the human interest side. guessing all the stay at home moms / old farkers have mroe brand awareness of lauer versus DP.

plus if it was DP, every night he'd be working in whatever "dare me to use a word on tonight's telecast" gag the wacky morning zoo guys came up.  you know, "against the grain", "passion bucket", etc.

Though Columbus used(still is?)to be a test market, that was there because that's where Warner Cable began, before becoming Warner Amex when they needed capital injection, before becoming Warner Communications?, before merging with Time to become Time Warner. There was more to it than that I think.

We never paid for the premium channels like HBO, and I found out about the button trick, but it stopped working later as the buttons wore out.

It was an early look at where we were all headed and I'm grateful for it. You'd be amazed at how high quality programming was back then. I look at that as the motivator for us not having cable now going on ~ten years, the stuff today just can't compare to those pioneers in cable tv programming. Sure, the stuff today has bigger budgets, but it was so much more fun then. I'm probably whitewashing my own memories.

So was his rant on the Redskins and the Redskins one actually had more relevance (actual topic at hand), but even if the topic is related he is politicizing something that (I feel) is not his place.  He could have gone after the NFL about the concussion history of Belcher (which would have been more on point than a gun control rant).

He could go off about mental health and how the NFL hides their responsibility for long-term safety of its players, but that would go against the NFL, and he can't do that.    The idea that someone won't kill someone because they don't have a gun is silly, especially when you are talking about someone as strong as an NFL player.  As someone else pointed out, if OJ didn't have a gun, would Nicole Simpson still be alive?

Ironically enough, the highlights on Olbermann's ESPN 2 show are pretty fun. Far better than SportsCenter.

I get that sports are an escape (look at my username). At the same time, when something like Belcher happens, you gotta address it. Bob's problem is that he gets preachy and acts like he is smarter than everyone else. Dan Patrick could say the same exact thing and it wouldn't even be a blip on the radar because his delivery is much smoother (and he avoids that stuff and let's his guests be controversial).

Costas is smug and it is off putting at times. At the same time, I like that he acknowledges the elephant in the room. He knows he can pull rank and tell the NFL to stuff it and not pull back like ESPN does on a regular basis.

Costas has an ego, but he calls about as good a baseball game for a national level broadcaster as you could ask for these days.  Obviously there are local broadcasters that are better, like Scully and such, but other than Vasgersian, I'm not sure if any other game of the week type broadcasters are at his level.  Of course, when the competition is Joe Buck, it's not like the bar is terribly high

Two off the top of my head that I mentioned.  I would hardly call it whipped into a froth of vitriol, but in your mind apparently hyperbole is fine for you, but inappropriate for me?  As I stated guns being better regulated likely would not have saved lives in the instance he was referring to, as someone mentally ill can kill many other ways.  I'm not going to spend the time to find further instances where he interjected his personal agenda where it wasn't appropriate, but I would be shocked if other instances didn't exist, whether it be comments or full on rants.

As I said I wasn't sure I read you correctly, which is why I asked.  But even on re-reading it looks like you cited only a single thing, something about the Redskins.  The other stuff was "could have gone" and "could go off" so I thought you were talking hypotheticals?

I'm not being hyperbolic at all; not sure what you mean there either.  Oh you mean "whipped into a froth", okay.

What I'm seeing here is that you and some others are writing this guy off as a host because of a single incident (okay, two) in which he expressed an opinion you disagree with.  I get that you don't like what he said, but if he's not doing it throughout his normal sports coverage it seems unfair to hate him so much for it.  It's as if you're wishing him dead / trying to get him fired for having an opinion.  (Now THAT was hyperbole.  I hope.)

Okay,  thanks, that's a little more substantive.  Again, of course, different show, and a much different time.  I don't know the nature of his radio show, but I do know he had a general interest TV talk show, not sports show, a long time ago, so I think it's not outrageous that has some non-sports opinions.  He hasn't been "just a sportscaster" for a very long time.

Somewhere along the line someone decided that Bob Costas is a 'broadcasting legend', whose has the voice of a generation.  I personally detest him, because it's like watching a poor William Shatner impersonation mixed with the ego of TIm Robbins.

And this isn't a baseball game, nor are the interviews he's asked to conduct.

Far Cough: bhcompy: Far Cough: Gestankfaust: Bob would probably just had spent his time filling the void by spewing his left wing crap...so ....meh

Again, because I don't watch the guy with any frequency I have to ask, WHAT LEFT WING CRAP?  Other than the call for better gun control, that one time, what left wing crap is the guy guilty of?

I can understand the "douche" arguments  or not liking his style, but this sudden classifying of a guy as a political mouthpiece based on exactly one incident seems awfully extreme to me.

I wouldn't necessarily call it left wing crap, but on his talk radio show during the Bush administration he went on a rant about how Bush was a failure and isn't qualified to be president and such.  I don't call it left wing crap, but rather people are listening to sportscasters for a reason, and it's not to talk politics.

It's just news to me that he's suddenly some kind of enemy to people.

I don't think he's an enemy.  If anyone, it's Olbermann that's an enemy.  He went off the opposite deepend of Dennis Miller

According to Al Franken, Dennis Miller always thought as we hear him say so these days.

Private_Citizen: I don't get all the hate on Bob Costas.

I like you.

This fark, they hate everything, but nothing tops their hate for themselves.

I noticed not that his wearing glasses was unusual, but instead I noticed how strong his prescription is.  You can tell by how far it refracts the profile of cheekbone.  Compare the line of the side of his face thru the lens vs. straight to the camera... the greater the deflection, the stronger the lens.  See my profile pic for an example.

His lenses are almost as strong as mine.

rickythepenguin: vegaswench: Why they didn't chose the great Al Michaels or the dapper Dan Patrick

Farkenhostile: But instead he has to try to make it look like hes pitching game 7 in the world series and the world should be devastated that he cant work right now.

on today's DP show, the fill-ins / Danettes were joking that DP was passed over because he just won some big award and wondered if Costas didn't want to give one of all of sports' marquee events to DP.

while they were joking, i think they were being somewhat sincere.

That was some of the WORST radio I've ever heard.  I turned it off when they were speculating about the sports emmy.  It was turrible
