Subby, you forgot to mention there is video of the log, as well!

And not only that, but it's filmed by none other than Michael J Fox!

If it was a log, would it not have floated down stream? Looks like a log though..could be a thought to be extinct log from the Cretaceous period.. Fossil records show that this particular type of log never floated down stream.

I was on an FTX out in the boonies of Ft. Stewart, GA, and late one evening I went out to take a leak.
I have been pissing on a log for several seconds before I noticed it was blinking.

If I hadn't already been pissing, I would have pissed myself.
My terrified memories insist that the alligator was about 12 feet long, but in all actuality it was more like 4 feet.

2014-02-11 10:49:00 AM
Then the log asked me for tree fiddy.

I said god dam you loch ness monsta, Im not gonna give you tree fiddy.

CSB:  Went canoeing and primitive camping w/ my son last weekend in Florida.  We're on the 2nd day and turn the corner and I hear a deep weird noise followed by a giant snap.  I'm looking up in the trees thinking a dead branch came undone and was going to fall on us.  My son was looking at the 10+ foot alligator pretty close by that opened it's jaws, growled or hissed and jumped off the log it was on snapping the log.  We paddled pretty quick for a minute or two just in case.

2014-02-11 10:59:35 AM
About 2/3 through the tape it does look like the thing does moving under the water and resurface (not bobbing). It's too bad the footage was so lousy.

I'm going to die a horrible death because if I'm ever in a situation where I see a strange (and possibly dangerous) animal my first instinct is to get much closer so I can examine it more closely.

Maybe if he'd waded into the water to find out, I could believe.

Also, people who own video cameras should understand the concept of recording things for later viewing.

It was floating downstream from what I could see. And also turned 45 degrees towards the shore while still floating down at the same speed, which would be an odd orientation for an animal that was moving under its own power - sort of switching to some sort of side paddle without changing speed.

Having canoed in the Everglades, I can attest that once you've seen a great big hissing alligator in the wild, every log starts too look like 'em.

There used to be a stump on my way to work that looked like a big cat. It fooled me more than once.

This, on the other hand, looks like a piece of wood. Or a cat. You could imagine it was a cat (head to right) despite the nearly straight line of its back.

I've said it before on here.

I actually had that book for a wood identification class.  Seriously, it was a ridiculously hard class.  As hard or harder than Calc 2, static physics or chem 3.

I had a huge bag of simarlly sized wood blocks to study from.  You figure out the type of wood by it's cellular structure etc.  My friends used to think it was hilarious when I carried that bag around...cuz, well, it was.

A surprising number of times when I'm out running I will see a person or animal in the distance and as I approach I realize it was just a shadow or a stump or two objects combining to form a familiar outline. The human brain is great at recognizing patterns but false positives happen pretty regularly. The trick is that most people will figure out that a false positive is just that before posting footage of it online.

This thread needs someone to argue for the crocodile.  Just as the streetlight thread rose to greatness upon the unceasing labours of its proponents proponent, so could the crocodile thread.

The video showed something the exact color and size of a crocodile and it was in water just like a croc might be.
