It's not even the design at this point.. It's the fact it's a winter event being held in 41F weather..  Snow can melt in below freezing weather with sun beating on it, so you can only imagine how bad it is at 41F w/ the sun on it.

Only in Russia would they try to go head to head with mother nature and science.

swankywanky: have they run out of condoms already?

100,000 condoms to the 2,800 athletes, my math figures each athlete is getting laid almost 36 times over the course of 16 days.

Either that, or 95% of these condoms go home as souvenirs.

I wonder what the male/female ratio is in the Olympic Village...

Davis said organizers told him they would treat the halfpipe with chemicals that keep the ice frozen at higher temperatures.

They're turning the half pipe into a Cat's Cradle.

I know!

Henceforth, we should refer to it as the Hash Pipe.

Thing's a mess.

Not when you're sober.

I actually feel somewhat bad for the people of Russia.  They deserve to have something nice just for them, but this whole thing is Putin's insane ego boost, but it's a mess of corruption, cut corners and censorship.  You can see them trying so damn hard to make things perfect, and that's what ticks me off.  These people just got hosed by an asshole wannabe dictator.

"If everything were perfect every time and this were an indoor sport, we'd be figure skating," he said.

Wow. Way to both trivialize the problem and slam other athletes. It's pretty clear that folks are trying to defend the SoCheap 2014 Olympics, but the sad fact is that the most expensive Olympics in history is little more than a huge boondoggle/wealth redistribution scheme for Russia. It's an embarrassment.

Some of us said the same thing about Vancouver/Whistler, especially when it was raining on the freestyle ski finals.

He didn't trivialize the problem; he said that it's an outdoor sport on a changing field, and you play through issues like this. He didn't slam other athletes; he compared an outdoor man-made track with an indoor, very consistent field (sheet of ice).

You're a drama queen.

Can you imagine trying to compete in a cross-country ski match with temperatures like that? I know the mountain temps are cooler than at Sochi, but if they're above freezing trying to ski through that must be like trying to ski through mud.

There weren't, like, COLDER spots in Russia they could've done this??  Holy hepped up jesus on juice, there's a big-ass REGION of Russia where it's frozen solid half the year practically.

WTF

heh.

We had our Junior Olympics Nordic events here back in 2012...some of those kids could very well be in Sochi right now.  So.  It was late February and damned if it stayed in the 40s and 50s THE WHOLE FREAKIN WEEK.  18-year-old dudes, shirtless, throwing snowslushballs at each other.

Quite the thing to see.

So, yeah, I'm willing to bet some of those Olympians have seen this shiat before...
