The tweet was 5 months old. Even if your account was hacked 5 months ago, you didn't delete the tweet.

I threw all the bananas out of my house once I found out they were racist fruit, the watermelon had to come pick them up because they had no place else to go. The plantains have been put on notice.

I know lots of Russians.  Sadly, this scandal is not going to effect her popularity in Russia all that much.  Their own newspapers run racist cartoons of Obama.

Nice farking try. You can't defend a statement then turn around and deny having said it at all when that doesn't work.

I am, and as far as weaselling out goes that was strictly third-rate. Once the free speech defence gets knocked down you're supposed to switch either to the overzealous staffer defence or the non-apology apology. You know, the one where you say it was a joke and you apologise if those who didn't understand that were offended.

Honestly, don't they get Fox News in Russia?

If the PR people haven't yet realized that no one believes this excuse any more, if they ever did, they need to hire new ones.

2014-02-11 09:23:09 AM

The third lie's the charm!

So, which was it? Free speech? My American friend sent it to me? My account was hacked? I love watching the statement that she clearly didn't write, in two parts, tweeted well after she basically took ownership of it by defending it.

Of course, that's the best part of the SoCheap 2014 Olympics - watching all of the unplanned events, like the 100-meter stray dog biathlon and the basic room furniture scavenger hunt. This event, the 3-person PR team Twitter relay, isn't one of my favorites, but it does beat the trash pile slopestyle event by a mile.

If she actually understood how free speech works, then in this situation, she's had it.  The government hasn't gotten involved.  She hasn't been arrested.  The only thing that has happened is that a lot of people think she's a jerk.  Many of those who think she's a jerk don't really care about the original tweet, but think her "I have free speech!" argument, followed by "I was hacked 5 months ago, so it's not my fault anyway" argument is just incredibly stupid.

Free speech does *not* keep people from thinking you are an idiot.  It does *not* protect you when you say stupid things.  It just keeps the government from getting involved.

Not to mention, in most places, free speech has limitations.  Libel, slander, and safety (think "FIRE!") related limitations.

It's not a "I can say anything I want and people have to respect me and my opinion" card.

I think he's saying Putin likes watching gay porn featuring unidentifiable (possibly wearing masks?) actors...  At least, that's what I'm choosing to believe is true, anyway!

I'm GUESSING he's saying that what I called "focus on the action, not the individual" is akin to the "love the sinner, hate the sin" policy some Christians have (or claim to have) regarding homosexuality, but that would be a really, really stupid thing to say, so I'm HOPING he was actually trying to say something much less stupid than that.  Particularly since I don't really see the connection between "love the sinner, hate the sin" and anything Putin's ever said or done

But I don't want to put words in his mouth so maybe he'll clear up what he was trying to convey earlier.

I still prefer my gay porn theory...

"Love the sinner, hate the sin" is such bullshiat... It's like saying you love black people; you just hate when they act all black! Or, you love people with Down Syndrome; you just hate when they act all retarded! Or, you love disabled people; you just hate when they act all crippled in their silly wheelchairs and such! So, you just want them to hide their true natures and act like something completely different? I don't think what you have there is "love" by any sane definition of the term...

/Ok, how many groups have I offended in this post?

So... umm..... are we supposed to ignore the fact that in that particular picture, he looks like a monkey? would it be less racist if there was a picture of him looking like another animal that hasn't been coined racist? like if there was a picture of him with one of those birthday cone-hat things on his face, would it be racist to say he looks like a bird?
