Meh, he was a weird news thing for like a week. What is that really worth? It's not like anyone will remember this or care in a few days.

Next he'll open up a Nathan's Famous, that ya know, just happens to serves hot dogs.

The name is merely pointing to his status after the Dumb Starbucks stunt.

People waited for hours for this place, what the fark? Why? Really interesting that people have so much time to waste. I could think of a hundred things I'd rather be doing than standing on line for a free coffee.

I wonder how much money this idiot wasted to create this "joke"?

How stupid.

the coffee was only free if your time was worthless.

there are apparently alot of worthless people out there.  i mean time.  i mean people are dumb.

"Many of you probably know me as a comedian, but this is no bit or joke," he said. "This is a real business I plan to get rich from," [Nathan] deadpanned.

I disagree with the first part - I don't know him as a comedian and, after this lame stunt, I still don't.
We're in full agreement with the second part - this is too weaksauce to qualify as a "joke".
As for the third part, this idiot has me rooting for The Man to crush him. I'll be very disappointed if he tries this again and Starbucks doesn't bury him in legal fees.

The largest population of Thais outside of Thailand is in LA, they nick name it the 78th province of Thailand. I believe it has the only "Thai town" in the world. Hell, Bangkok's real name partially translates into The city of angels.

If it's a parody, instead of Dumb Starbucks Coffee, why not call it Dumb $tarbuck$ Coffee?

Well, that bit of stupidity didn't last long. Hope he's looking forward to the lawsuit.

Does this mean that all of those knock-offs in China, like Starclucks or Sorny are actually legal in the US because of "fair use"?

Does this mean that anyone can use a trademark by putting the word "dumb" before it? Like "Dumb Intel" or "Dumb Wal-Mart" (though that last one seems like a double-negative).

I wouldn't call it dumb Starbucks, but I guess that's the attention grab. People waited HOURS in line for a damn cup of coffee from that place.  The should've called it "Dumb People".

Parody is a broad exception to copyright protection, and comedians often use it. However, the parody to trademark protection is not as broad.
"Finally, certain parodies of trademarks may be permissible if they are not too directly tied to commercial use."

2014-02-11 10:11:45 AM
"By adding the word 'dumb,' we are legally allowed to use the coveted Starbucks name and logo because we've fulfilled the minimum requirements to be considered a parody under US law."

Some people think that stupid is the same thing as funny.

Mr Fielder said he plans to open a second location in Brooklyn, New York.

They *may* not sure him for the first time.  They may figure "He learned his lesson".  But I guarantee, if he tries it again, they'll file every lawsuit they can think of.  And I'm pretty sure they can afford a ton of lawyers, who they will then fill with caffeine.

Because a TV show has nothing to do with commerce. Yes. I see.

Just tried watching the pilot episode of "Nathan For You"

Ugh.

Interesting concept, but it fails on so many levels. I like a wide range of humor....dry humor, silly humor, but that show was just painful to watch.

Maybe Starbuck's legal team will chase him out of the country.

Some jurisdictions do not require a health permit if you are giving free samples, like what this coffee place was doing.

As noted by WelldeadLink, copyright and trademark fair use are different. While they may have a decent copyright defense, that won't fly for trademark.

That said, all of the articles I've seen mention that they were giving out free coffee... If they weren't actually selling anything, then they might have a separate defense for trademark infringement.

Nathan for you started a little slow but it became one of the funniest shows I've ever seen in my life. There is a reason it got renewed with the worst ratings on tv.
