A few years ago, I was getting ready to turn in for the evening, when I heard a godawful caterwauling coming from the living room.
The weather was warm, and my girlfriend's cat was on the back of the couch squaring off with an outdoor cat through the screened window.
As I walked in to get a closer look, my girlfriend's freaked out cat launched himself at my head from about 8 feet away.
I got my left arm up in time to block him, but he latched on, and proceeded to bite the hell out of my forearm.
I successfully shook him off, and immediately went in the bathroom to clean the wounds.
I bled out the punctures and scratches under hot soapy water, applied hydrogen peroxide and Neosporin, bandaged myself up, and went to bed.
The next morning, my left arm was swelled up about twice its normal size from elbow to fingertips.
Immediately went to a prompt care clinic, got a couple of shots, and 5 days worth of some high dollar antibiotics, and was healed after a few days.

The cat and I were still best of friends after the incident.

My mom stupidly agreed to babysit a friend's cat one winter when the owners went to Florida. Farker immediately freaked out and bolted to the attic. Didn't see it for weeks. Christmas morning we came down and as mom reached under the tree the bastard bit her. Dad savagely grabbed the cat, which was howling like nothing I've ever heard before and threw it out the front door into the snow. Never saw it again. Mom got very sick from the bite. Turns out that cat scratch fever is real and fairly serious. She was hooked to an IV for days.

People came home and got angry that we lost their shiatty cat. My father handed them the hospital bill and told them to get over it.

Cat scratch fever is no joke. She could have died if she didn't go to then hospital almost immediately. It wasn't a major wound but she'd heard that it could be a big deal by watching some morning news show.

Yeah, cat bites are a big deal.  Scratches don't seem to be nearly as much of an infection issue.  Which is good because my cats never bite (except love bites that don't penetrate any skin at all).  They don't really scratch on purpose either, but I'll get em from playing/kneading.

One of our cats was hit by a car and survived when I was growing up. It's hips were broken but it managed to drag itself into a field, where I found it half crazed from pain and exhaustion. My mom brought it into the house but it was clear we needed to get it to the vet. When my dad picked the cat up, she bit him in the thumb right down to the bone. He held on and got the cat in the car, then went to the doctor while we took the cat to the vet (where it was put out of its suffering). My dad got a big antibiotic shot and didn't need to be put down. :)

I've been bit by one of my cats that was playing around when I foolishly put my fingers under a sheet of newspaper. She put some nice holes in the meaty part of my hand between the thumb and forefinger. Half a bottle of hydrogen peroxide later it had stopped bleeding. Fortunately didn't need any further treatment...

I'm actually kind of surprised to hear CSBs about cat bites.  When I was a kid one of our cats got spooked and bit into the fleshy part of my palm.  Ground down like her life depended on it, deformed and bruised the flesh (I basically had a painful, pinhead-sized bruise and deep dent in my hand), but didn't break skin.  Since then I didn't think cats were capable.  Claws, on the other hand. . . never got an infection from one, but I've gotten lacerations where I'm staring dumbfounded at a dead skin flap oozing blood like I got sliced with a razor.

Pretty common: I was pushed on the playground at school and my wrist was broken and dislocated.  Rather than calling 911, the school nurse took me to the principal and proceeded to try to track down my mother, which oddly (my mom was out running errands) took some time.  While I sat in the office and cried from the pain.

I never had voluntary dealings with a school nurse after that.

My cat has never bitten me. My dog did once, but that's because I put my arm in between him and the other German shepherd he was fighting. I got sewn up by the nurse and got a tetanus shot. It didn't really hurt.

A  cow once stuck its tongue in my ear. My life is very exciting.

I tried to break up a fight between two of our cats once and the big one bit me so hard he got his fangs to touch under the skin of my hand.  The next day I called out sick because my hand was so swollen I couldn't get a long sleeve shirt over it and I had a line running up my arm that didn't look too good.  I went to the doc and he hit me up with some antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pills and went to work the next day with a comically large hand.

My boss so me in the middle of the day and freaked out about the size of my hand.  He asked me what happened and I said "I told you yesterday when I called out - cat bit me."  He told me he thought I made it up.  Then he sent me home.

In 40 years of having both inside and outside cats, only two of mine have ever bitten me.  When I moved a couple years ago, my big one (22lbs) decided that he wasn't going into the crate.  In the ensuing scuffle, he bit my left index finger at the middle knuckle and ripped enough to expose bone, and my right calf looked like someone had done an excellent job filleting a bluegill.  After I got him in the crate, I bled out the wounds, cleaned and bandaged them and continued moving, as the movers wait for no man or woman and I wasn't paying a couple hundred to ask them to go away!

The finger got pretty swollen for 3-4 days and then of course I had a rainbow of colors and pus to deal with, but all in all it cleared up quickly.  Big cat is still my favorite cuddle buddy.

People seem to have this persistent idea that dog/cat/whatever bites aren't dangerous "because their mouths are so much cleaner than ours!". Even for the critters where that's true, it's still a -relative- comparison. Just because one is less of a septic nightmare than hobo bites doesn't mean it's sanitary.

Thanks for the advice, my cat does not bite; if he gets out of line the dog comes over and runs him off until he remembers his manners.  One of my friends cats does bite, so where can you obtain such syringes?  I've never seen them for sale.

Yes. Bites from anything are dangerous. Mouths are full of germs. Most of the time, however, these kind of things can be prevented by using common sense: if you get bitten by anything, go clean the bite, and put some antiseptic on it. Then watch for signs of infection.

CSB time: our most recent cat was found by me as a 5 week old kitten under the hood of a fire damaged car that came in at work. I reached in to grab him, and he bit my hand HARD. He wasn't kidding. I had no idea that a kitten that small could bite that hard. My co-worker went in with a thick glove and grabbed him. I cleaned the wound up, and never had a problem. Cat still doesn't like me, the ungrateful bastard.

Get a Kickeroo -- a long thin stuffed toy that they can grab and bite at one end while kicking the hell out of it at the other end. Sprinkle with catnip, give it to the cat, and then step away. Hours of fun! I also have a wooly bone that they love, alternately biting and scratching it or cuddling to sleep with it.
