hobnail: danielscissorhands: Noticeably F.A.T.: danielscissorhands: Have you heard about the random deaths occurring amongst tourists to Thailand in the last decade? Two Canadian sisters died a few years ago in their hotel room. Some people are blaming it on pesticides. Their is another theory that bartenders are putting crushed mosquito coils in drinks to give the drinks a hallucinogenic effect.

There's a rumor that Taiwanese bartenders are killing people with drinks spiked with DDT? Well, I'm convinced.

Oh, PS: It's not DDT, silly, it's DEET. If they put DDT in mosquito coils, the people who drank those drinks would easily be long gone.

This from the guy who thought DDT wiped out the passenger pigeon.

Hint: DDT isn't all that acutely toxic to humans either.

So you're saying you're not aware of the alternate paradigm where DDT wiped out the passenger pigeon and the Confederates won the Civil War?

So you don't think drinking DDT could kill you?

If you didn't already see the link I posted above, this guy drank it to prove a point, but who knows what it did to him.

Anyway, all I was saying was that DDT is not in mosquito coils, it's DEET.

PaLarkin: reason

PaLarkin: danielscissorhands: PaLarkin: Some have asked why the mattress in the video is bigger than a twin mattress.  It's simple.  She boght the twin mattresses for the kids.  The big mattress in the video was hers.

Bedbugs were virtually unknown in the US for years.  There is a means to kill them.  It's called DDT.

It only wiped out the passenger pigeon, how harmful could it be?

The passenger pigeon was extinct in 1914.

DDT was first made in 1874, but wasn't known to be an insecticide until 1939.

There's no reason why it couldn't be used today for killing the bugs that nothing else will easily kill, such as bedbugs, but banned from being used by farmers to spray hundreds of acres.

DDT doesn't work well on bedbugs anymore. "In fact, bed bugs were widely resistant to DDT by the mid-1950s." -CDC

"DDT acts by binding to the sodium pores of cells, allowing sodium to flood the cells and causing the nervous system to misfire. Today, the pesticides of choice for bed bugs are pyrethrums, but bed bugs are quickly developing resistance to this class of pesticides. Do you know how pyrethrums work? They bind to the sodium pores of cells - just like DDT. Bed bugs with the genetic mutation that makes them invincible to pyrethrums will be just as resistant to treatment with DDT."

I-10 runs North-South from Tucson to Phoenix. Unless I'm missing something in your statement...

hailin: I used to work setting up estate/garage sales. It boggled my mind how many people buy used mattresses. I even sold one where the person had DIED on it! The conversation went like this:
*Mattress unmarked in corner in trash section*
Guy: He is that a king mattress? How much?
Me: Oh it isn't for sale...
Guy: Why not?
Me: Well...because the previous owner sort of...kicked the bucket on it...
Guy: *thinks for a minute* Would you take $50?
Me: ...sure why the hell not? I'll help load you load it

And they wind up in a furnished apartment rental unit, boarding house,  the local no tell motel, etc.....

That comment wasn't intended to be 100% factually correct, it was intended to poke fun at you going with what may have been the least credible example possible to prove your point. If you want to talk about how bad pesticides are you might want to stay away from "Some random people have died in a foreign country, and some other people said it might be pesticides". That's not going to get you anywhere.

Yes. Once for every piss-poor piece of evidence you put forward.

wgb423: Used mattresses = bedbugs

As a property manager I see this time and time again.

To the person that offered a million dollars for a way to kill bedbugs.   You can make out your check to wgb423 or my first name "cash".

Ways to kill bedbugs without chemicals
1)  Steam  (time consuming)
2)  Extreme heat (very difficult)
3) Extreme cold (works for cars - leave the windows open at night)

Ways to trap bedbugs
1) Put dry ice in a dog food bowl under each leg of bed and grease legs of bed with Vaseline
2) Mattress bag

/doubters run the googletubes
//ALWAYS check your "new" mattress before letting them move it in your house or apt.

I can see steam being difficult, and while many apartment complexes now own there own ovens to cook the apartments between tenants. cooking isn't that easy for hotels though. Cooking is best for single buildings (smaller room complexes) like houses.

Your traps are not efficient and are not the million dollar idea to sell convenience to the numerous hotels around the country, if not the world. a pheromone bait type trap (physical or poison) will be the true money maker. Have them last 6 weeks to a quarter-year and the licensing fees to raid or other pesticide manufacturer would be like a rain of money. Probably be simpler to sell the patents for millions though.

And yes, someone had to invent a trap that works first. Bedbugs only go for only for food, and only people are food.

/million dollars, not yours

Nope you are a book burning nazi that wants to destroy the environment if you support anything but total bannination.

So simply presenting the facts makes one a book burning nazi?  I'm in favor of the complete prohibition of whatever you're smoking.

Ok. You have my solemn word that each time I throw forward piss poor evidence, from this day forward, I shall contact you, and you will in turn, contact a random Thai person, and ask them about Taiwan. Deal?
