the mattress in the video looks much bigger than a bunk bed mattress too. and what is with the weird ass editting job of making the video all skinny and duplicating it blurred out? that seems like an odd effect to just randomly do if you aren't trying to hide the rest of the frame.

Vertical video syndrome. The blurry part is so it fills the whole picture.

Bedbugs in a mattress in a mattress in a hole in the bottom of the sea?

2014-02-11 08:57:53 AM
I once saw a news show (20/20, 48-hrs, something like that) where this poor girl in NY bought a mattress as new at a furniture shop and it was the same deal there, except there were no bedbugs, but she developed a skin irritation and when they opened up the "new" mattress it looked like something from a vacant crack house; I felt like throwing up.  The nastiest thing ever.

Brent Agee is the owner of  MasterTech Pest Solutions. "A mattress inside a mattress," he says. "That's the first time I heard about people doing that, but that's usually where you find bed bugs, inside mattresses."

Oh he owns an exterminating business? That makes this story so much more believable.

I don't care if it is a single, that is way too cheap for a new mattress and should have been a big clue to the buyer.

Not uncommon at all. In fact this happens all the time. Google it. Better yet, drive around in poorer urban neighborhoods. You'll see a lot of liquor stores, check cashing joints and...you guessed it, mattress stores. Just little storefront places that 'make' mattresses right there on site. These places are infamous for 'recycling' old mattresses.

Mattress stores make used car stores look like Amazon by comparison. I hate buying a new mattress. It's not just the stores, either - manufacturers do their level best to obfuscate product lines in terms of features, quality, etc., specifically to make mattresses harder to compare side-by-side. Consumer Reports had a rather scathing article some years back which described all of the ways mattress manufacturers and distributors scam consumers, from misleading language to manipulating ostensibly quantitative measurements like "spring count".

I read that same article from CR and they said mattresses are marked up 50%+ and they were pretty much all the same and to just buy the most inexpensive mattress that felt comfortable to you.  The end.

I just sold a 30 year-old seriously used twin mattress online and I had people clambering over themselves to buy it from me.  It sold within a couple of hours despite posting it at like 3AM, and I had to start responding to inquiries with; "Here's my address, the first one here gets it."  The first guy to show up tried to convince me to sell other mattresses in my house, and looked at me like I was made of poo when I asked if he wanted the boxspring too.  Makes me wonder if my childhood mattress is enjoying a second life as a new mattress!
Go li'l mattress!

Well that pretty much summed up my whole experience at Art Van.  The rock hard boner of a sale turned me off more than anything so I bought elsewhere and don't plan on ever going back.  I can tell you they can't buy up every other ad spot on every other tv station in the metro area while also being able to sell a quality product at a good price.

My apt complex got the bedbugs a while back, including my apt. Those things are the worst. Roaches/ants can be sprayed and poisoned with bait. Rats/mice can be killed with traps. The only way to really get bedbugs is too cook (heat to above 120 degF) your house/apt for a couple days. Those farkers hide all over the place and are seriously crafty bastards.

The first person to make a legitimate trap or bait that works on bedbugs is a multimillionaire.

This is one reason we gave up beds entirely last year. Mattress places are worse than used car places, and for something even a little comfortable the prices are insane. For less than $200 we built a stand and bought a hammock large enough for two (stretched out it's a little shorter and a lot wider than a king bed, but empty it only has about a 2' footprint). Haven't woken up with a sore back since, and yes everything that can be done in a bed can be done in a hammock. Some things that CAN'T be done (at least not easily) in a bed can also be done in a hammock.

Honest, it has nothing to do with any hipstery/hippy stuff -- just tried sleeping in a hammock one night when we were thinking about hammock camping at some point, and woke up after ~4 hours feeling better than I ever have in my life, then attempted to sleep in bed again the next night and woke up after 8 hours feeling like I'd been beaten and hadn't slept at all... and then Mr. safeforwork had the same experience. We immediately went shopping for a two person hammock. Within the month the whole family had switched.

/still haven't gone camping

I'm shopping for one now. From what I have figured out the major brands are rip offs. I'm looking into some of those companies that send you the foam pieces and you assemble. At least I will know what is in the mattress.

Also the best way to avoid the hard sell at a mattress store is to bring a 4 year old with you.

Interesting.

Have you heard about the random deaths occurring amongst tourists to Thailand in the last decade? Two Canadian sisters died a few years ago in their hotel room. Some people are blaming it on pesticides. Their is another theory that bartenders are putting crushed mosquito coils in drinks to give the drinks a hallucinogenic effect.

No, it's pretty much every day.

There are plenty of exterminators that work well after hours especially for businesses since places like restaurants and hotels don't want customers to see an exterminator pull up out front and then think about rats in the kitchen or fleas and bedbugs in the curtains.

Fark the eagles.  Bedbugs must die!  If bedbugs were ever threatened with extinction, the environmental extremists would use the endangered species act to sue for a ban of anything that kills bedbugs.

I'm glad (sarcasm) that 101 Mattress doesn't even deny that they sold a refurbished mattress as new, and that "refurb" means "new cover". They just deny that there were bed bugs.

They're just recycled mattresses.  They likely have a tag that says "contains used materials."  Why do you hate the earth?!

Yeah, I buy memory foam and wouldn't touch a refurbished mattress.

DDT isn't as horrible as it's reputation.  It can be used in much tinier doses than it was previously used at, and still be effective.  Yeah, back in the day they just slathered the stuff on.  It's no surprise it caused so many problems.  It was pretty awesome for getting rid of malaria at least.

And ultimately DDT is still better than pouring crude oil into pools to get rid of mosquitos like they did in Panama in the early 1900s.

I would never buy a mattress from a mattress store, or from a furniture store like Art Van. This is a case where buying from a big company like Meijer, Walmart, JC Penny, Sears, Kohls, et. al. would be preferable. Yes, it may cost a little more, but I'd rather know I'm the first to spill bodily fluids on something I'm sleeping on than take a chance on someone else's decades of sweat and grime being underneath the top layer of my nightly refuge and sexyplace.

You might want to check your info again.  People sprayed with DDT aren't going to just drop dead, but it has been shown to be genotoxic and an endocrine disruptor, especially messing with the thyroid. It has been linked to liver, pancreas and breast cancer, diabetes, and neurological problems such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.  It's also linked to reproductive issues such as low sperm quality, miscarriage, low birth weight, pre-term birth, and developmental delays, decreased cognitive skills and congenital hypothyroidism (aka cretinism).

It's known to affect just about every egg laying species as well, although the mechanism of action on insects isn't upon the eggs.  In Insects, it opens the sodium ion channels in their neurons causing spasms.

Uh. Wat?

http://almostbohemian.com/hammock/

All I can say is trust me: your posture will be better, your mood will be better, you will be better. Water beds (which I grew up sleeping on) suck even worse than normal beds. So many pressure points. The hammock forms itself to your body better than any foam ever will, and certainly does support you.

Only problem we've run into: getting out. We have a small bedroom so have to hang it extra high. One person has to swing legs over, use the ridge that forms between us to climb up, then carefully swing down. Once one person is out, the tension making the hammock hang extra high releases and it's easy for the other person to just hop out.

The only time I 'walk like Yoda' is after having to sleep in a bed. Even a really nice memory foam bed.

DDT doesn't work well on bedbugs anymore. "In fact, bed bugs were widely resistant to DDT by the mid-1950s." -CDC

"DDT acts by binding to the sodium pores of cells, allowing sodium to flood the cells and causing the nervous system to misfire. Today, the pesticides of choice for bed bugs are pyrethrums, but bed bugs are quickly developing resistance to this class of pesticides. Do you know how pyrethrums work? They bind to the sodium pores of cells - just like DDT. Bed bugs with the genetic mutation that makes them invincible to pyrethrums will be just as resistant to treatment with DDT."

I can see steam being difficult, and while many apartment complexes now own there own ovens to cook the apartments between tenants. cooking isn't that easy for hotels though. Cooking is best for single buildings (smaller room complexes) like houses.

Your traps are not efficient and are not the million dollar idea to sell convenience to the numerous hotels around the country, if not the world. a pheromone bait type trap (physical or poison) will be the true money maker. Have them last 6 weeks to a quarter-year and the licensing fees to raid or other pesticide manufacturer would be like a rain of money. Probably be simpler to sell the patents for millions though.

And yes, someone had to invent a trap that works first. Bedbugs only go for only for food, and only people are food.
