The USA women get a road game to start off the curling. They face the Russians and it's on TV (NBCSN)

How can I watch this on my iPad while I Fark?

Oh, I can't.

Getting all set up with my laptop next to the bed so I can stream curling to fall asleep to. Will hopefully wake up to switch to the half-pipe qualifying - apparently it's a shiat show, and I don't want to miss it!

Man I wish I was gonna be up during the 2am/11pm period - there is all kinds iof good stuff going but I need some sleep.

Might be awake in time for the Women's 500 M Speed Skate final though at 4:45..I sleep weird hours.

All right, I'm back in time for curling. Of course, this means the NBC site's live stream, but it's better than nothing right now.

Also, check this out, taken from the stream of #NBCFail tweets:

This is a test of the Olympic Broadcasting System. If this had been an actual Olympics, we'd have hosted it in somewhere better than Sochi don't you think?

2014-02-11 12:02:00 AM
I can't even FIND the NBC stream tonight...

2014-02-11 12:03:39 AM
I repeat my earlier post: if you have NBCSN, you can watch the USA v RUS match there.

There, found it. Oh, sweet, the US gets to face off against the evil (but holy fark Ekaterina Galinka is HOT) Russians.

I've always thought Jennifer Jones looks like a blonde Sarah Silverman. Thoughts?

Lol that was a funny exchange. "Wake up America! Drink your coffee!" "It's nighttime over there"

Don't see it on my NBCSN. Soccer highlights. Got it on stream

I think you meant Sidorova is hot.

Well you could go to First Row - channel 2 is BBC for the Women's curling match that just started against RUS

That's why they did so bad in their first match (and didn't win in Vancouver?)

Dear god, did the Soviets start a supermodel curling breeding program before the wall fell? Holy fark

2014-02-11 12:09:33 AM
I don't have any cable or OTA (tuner broke) options.

Sh*t, even FOX gave us the Super Bowl for nothing online.

Question for the curling experts: I would think there's obviously a penalty of some sort should a curler accidentally bump a stone that's in play with anything other than another stone, but on the off-chance someone manages to make that blunder, like trip over a stone or whatnot, what happens then?

A lot of countries did that. Apparently not the US (at least in 2014)

Then NBC's own website is lying.

Good thing I chose to watch it online.

You could not be more right. Twenty years from now they wont even recognize medals awarded here because reasons.

For those who know curling: why 73:00 on the clock? That's a very random number to me.

Usually, if the bump is very minor you declare that you hit a stone and the skips agree to put it back as close to where it was as possible. If you hit the stone you're sweeping, you're supposed to kill it before it hits anything (you're also terrible at sweeping). It gets complicated when you accidentally move a stone a lot. Typically if it's your own stone, you'll remove it from play, if it's the other team's they'll get you to put it back.
Whatever happens the outcome is decided together by the skips. No referees.

I just randomly turned on NBC (west coast) prime time coverage. Short track skating... and I gotta wonder, does anyone know about regulations regarding what helmets they use? 'Cause it looks like those aren't the most aero things on the market. I would want something like the Giro Air Attack or Specialized S-Works Evade (which was co-designed with McClaren's F1 team) instead of the chunky blocks they have on their heads. Cycling time trial helmets in case you have no idea what I'm talking about.

That's the maximum amount of time you get to play your team's stones in the match. You'll see teams call time in the last few ends. Think of it like the clock in chess.
/ Not sure when exactly the clock stops and starts though.

Short track is basically roller derby. It's not about speed, it's about survival.

Well, I know that. I just mean why that number?

/and the clock clearly starts/stops when 1 team's rock is stopped.

Watch short track for a while and you'll realize that aerodynamics is really not that important but safety is.

I get that. As a motor sports fan it reminds me of midgets or sprint cars on short dirt tracks, but as a cyclist it looks like velodrome racing, survival is huge, but so is aero and drafting.

It also looks like something I'm stupid enough to try for fun.

Apparently, it's more like 75 minutes minus two optional one-minute timeouts. They figured that's about how much time a team needs to comfortably do ten ends. Same basic reason the basketball shot clock is 24 seconds: someone went back, looked at all the exciting games from the pre-shot clock era, added up the total shots attempted in those games, and divided the total time of a game by the amount of shots it was deemed to take to make a game fun to watch.

Love this Russian crowd in curling. They clearly don't quite get the rules. Big roars whenever the Russian team has a stone near the button, even when it's unguarded.

It's always an odd kind of fun when the host nation doesn't know WTF they're watching. Though too many instances of that will tend to get a sport tossed out of the program, which is part of what happened to baseball.

The Athens crowd particularly had no idea. The first pitch thrown by the Greek pitcher in their opener against the Netherlands was a ball and the crowd cheered so hard he looked back at the scoreboard to make sure it wasn't actually called a strike. Then the PA announcer had to clarify, "Ladies and gentlemen, if a fly ball lands near you, please accept it as our gift." Because fans were throwing the foul balls back onto the field.
