Still can't top Fallon and The Roots. As much as I can't stand Jimmy Fallon, The Roots are an actual band, and have some of the most solid jazz-hip hop CD's ever made.

But did you see who else is in the band? Syd & Seth from Les Savy Fav, a woman named Kim from Beyonce's band touring band (who unfortunately I'm not familiar with), and Eli from Girls Vs. Boys! LSF and GvB go way back with Fred; both were regulars at the Fireside and elsewhere when FA was still in Chicago drumming for Trenchmouth (with Damon of The Eternals). The Roots are the best late night band ever, but this has the potential to be seriously awesome.

/well played there, Mr. Meyers. Expectations are going to be quite high....

Fallon's strengths are his gimmicks. I have a tough time getting past his innate lack of humor, inability to provide funny banter with guests, and painfully awkward joke  deliveries. Conan I like, and I think Seth Myers will do a fine job. For all of SNL's weaknesses, he delivered weekend update consistently well. Not great, but above average. There's basically no way he can walk into Fallon's spot and be less funny than Fallon.

bluorangefyre: fusillade762: Earlier today I was trying to imagine what Ferguson would be like if they picked him to replace Letterman when he retires. No more rusty trombone jokes, that's for sure.

I've heard it said he is quite happy where he is.  I've always said Conan was being groomed to take the keys to The Ed Sullivan Theater, but considering how well his last broadcast late night experience went, he might not do it.

Face it, when Dave retires or they remove his corpse from behind the desk (whichever comes first), CBS will be in a panic.  Because seriously, who can replace David Letterman?

doctor wu: Fallon turned out to be far funnier as a talk show host than he ever was on SNL, Meyers will have to perform the same feat.

This is bad news for people who like Portlandia.  They might start to wait two or 3 years in between seasons now.

As 51 year old white, Real 'Merkan, I think your right. I don't think Fallon will really be given the freedom he needs to succeed.

Don't disagree with any of that, but Fallon seriously needs alot of time to get a joke going sometimes. To be fair, the old Carson show had those skits, but I don't t think anybody at NBC has seriously sat down and watched those shows in a long, long tiime.

Yep, and the filthy jokes are what we love Ferg for!!! (that, and he wrote one of my favorite autobiographies, 'American On Purpose'). Cleaning his jokes up would be anathema to what got him a fan base in the first place. And considering the guests are often very high profile............... sit back and think what a conversation between Obama, Craig and Geofrey Peterson would be like.
Interestingly enough, and it's mentioned in that book, Letterman got him the job and schooled him on the basics of late night.
