As 51 year old white, Real 'Merkan, I think your right. I don't think Fallon will really be given the freedom he needs to succeed.

Oh. I thought maybe he was shtupping Carrie Brownstein. I was about to get all stabby.

Earlier today I was trying to imagine what Ferguson would be like if they picked him to replace Letterman when he retires. No more rusty trombone jokes, that's for sure.

Still can't top Fallon and The Roots. As much as I can't stand Jimmy Fallon, The Roots are an actual band, and have some of the most solid jazz-hip hop CD's ever made.

2014-02-10 11:55:07 PM
But did you see who else is in the band? Syd & Seth from Les Savy Fav, a woman named Kim from Beyonce's band touring band (who unfortunately I'm not familiar with), and Eli from Girls Vs. Boys! LSF and GvB go way back with Fred; both were regulars at the Fireside and elsewhere when FA was still in Chicago drumming for Trenchmouth (with Damon of The Eternals). The Roots are the best late night band ever, but this has the potential to be seriously awesome.

/well played there, Mr. Meyers. Expectations are going to be quite high....

Yep, and the filthy jokes are what we love Ferg for!!! (that, and he wrote one of my favorite autobiographies, 'American On Purpose'). Cleaning his jokes up would be anathema to what got him a fan base in the first place. And considering the guests are often very high profile............... sit back and think what a conversation between Obama, Craig and Geofrey Peterson would be like.
Interestingly enough, and it's mentioned in that book, Letterman got him the job and schooled him on the basics of late night.

Don't disagree with any of that, but Fallon seriously needs alot of time to get a joke going sometimes. To be fair, the old Carson show had those skits, but I don't t think anybody at NBC has seriously sat down and watched those shows in a long, long tiime.

I'm not too sure about the "getting enough freedom" thing. The times they are a'changin - prime time tv has been pushing the envelope, and NBC really, really wants/needs this move to succeed. And if they let it happen the door will be open for Ferguson.

That's what I like about Craig.  The humor is kind of anarchic, and there's little or no pressure for him to give it "mass appeal".  I wish he'd give us a taste of 'Bing Hitler', though...

Fallon turned out to be far funnier as a talk show host than he ever was on SNL, Meyers will have to perform the same feat.

I've heard it said he is quite happy where he is.  I've always said Conan was being groomed to take the keys to The Ed Sullivan Theater, but considering how well his last broadcast late night experience went, he might not do it.

Face it, when Dave retires or they remove his corpse from behind the desk (whichever comes first), CBS will be in a panic.  Because seriously, who can replace David Letterman?

LOL, doubt that'd happen! I totally forgot to Youtube that, thanks for reminding me! Saw him November 2012 at the Chicago Theater, and all I gotta say is he is farking hilarious live! Haha, I was scared at one point, since I had front and center balcony seats, knocked off of a day's worth of beer and whiskey, and damn near fell over the rails laughing. :-p

If they are trying to make sure this us as unfunny as possible I think they succeeding.  I don't find either of those guys one bit funny and it seems like snl gets worse every year yet nbc cant get enough of it.

But obviously others do like it so they can watch it for me!

I agree; I'd flip from Dave to Jimmy Fallon because he was far superior in that timeslot than that crazed Scotsman with the animatronic skeleton and men in a horse coustume.

Which kind of works out because Fallon is about a safe a choice as you'll ever get for this gig. Just about as safe as Leno.

Fallon's strengths are his gimmicks. I have a tough time getting past his innate lack of humor, inability to provide funny banter with guests, and painfully awkward joke  deliveries. Conan I like, and I think Seth Myers will do a fine job. For all of SNL's weaknesses, he delivered weekend update consistently well. Not great, but above average. There's basically no way he can walk into Fallon's spot and be less funny than Fallon.

Meyers is a smarmy, arrogant douche.

He's like the villainous preppy from those '80s college comedies.

Portlandia is awful.  Just simply awful...   it's like rotten oatmeal..    its putrid stench is matched only by its blandness.   i tried.  i really tried to watch it and enjoy it... but it is so very narrow.. without being funny..

and I loved Fred on SNL... !
but that show....   should never have gotten past the pilot.

maybe there will be good chemistry between Seth and Fred..
Fred and the woman from Portlandia... yeesh.    I guess she's just too good at acting like a vapid coont.
