Holy shiat, they've moved on to actual extortion? Just to prevent some company from having a unionized workforce even though the company doesn't care?

2014-02-10 03:29:32 PM
Now? They've been doing that since january 2009.

These Republicans, trying to get government to interfere with business.

It's illegal for a company to try to enact retribution on workers for organizing a union, but ain't nothin' says it's illegal for the state government to try to enact retribution on workers for organizing a union.

Because voting is un-american... or something

You know, if these workers wanted to get Republican support, they would just refer to their union as a PAC.

2014-02-10 04:21:15 PM
The funny thing is that VW *wants* the workers to organize because they're being pressured by the VW Workers Council in Germany.

FTFA: State Senate Speaker Pro Tem Bo Watson in a news conference in Chattanooga on Monday called the United Auto Workers campaign at the plant "un-American."

Bo's got a promising career in national politics.

They're scared the rest of us here in Tennessee might hear the naughty u-word and demand actual living wages

The comments (ugh) explain why Republicans are so successful at messaging.

When people start talking about how this is the government blackmailing VW / employees, they're right.  And that's what Republicans want: people to blame the government.

It's a lot easier to fark things up and then say "government's bad, see?  things are farked up" than it is to fight against that attitude.

2014-02-10 05:08:43 PM
Can someone(Seriouosly) explain to me how these guys think it's THEIR business what the actual workers for the VW plant vote for?

FTFA: State Senate Speaker Pro Tem Bo Watson in a news conference in Chattanooga on Monday called the United Auto Workers campaign at the plant "un-American." He said a vote in favor of the union would lead the wide GOP majorities in the state Legislature to take a dim view of future incentives aimed at expanding production.

Good thing the free press went into detail what these un-American practices were.

A union is a group of workers.  Therefore:

super_grass: GOP rep: we don't give you special breaks if groups of workers end up with the perks.

So those special breaks were okay but only as the money was going to corporate profits, right?

Incentive was $333,333 USD per worker.

to be fair, the German workers want the union in the US because they believe it'll cause exactly these kinds of problems and bring those Tennessee jobs back to Germany.

I went looking for a source for that (not that I didn't believe you, I just wanted more information), and found this.

I like the idea, and love that, for once, Republicans don't want what a large corporation actually wants.

Just the other day I was treated to a little workplace speech by a so-called libertarian who says things like "Democrats and Republicans are equally bad" with a straight face and opposes unions. This guy is 15 years younger than me. So yeah, you go with that "it's the boomers' fault" crap.

Hey, that politician is just carrying out the voice of the people since it's his job and all. Of course, there's virtually no content in the article so there's no telling what got left out.

dr_blasto: Holy shiat, they've moved on to actual extortion? Just to prevent some company from having a unionized workforce even though the company doesn't care?

Didn't the parent company actually tell VW America to unionize its American workforce because they were being pressured by the union in Germany because the American workforce isn't unionized?

And also, if I get this straight, the Tennessee State government is telling VW to break the law by interfering with the union vote or lose their tax breaks? They don't think this will lead to VW pulling out of Tennessee and moving to another state?

It's even more mind boggling when you realize the same dudes screaming about things being "un-American" are the first to talk about nullification and secession when the American government does something they don't like.

Republicans sure hate the Union of the united states of america

/Either you are for the Union or get the f*ck out and no more Daddy Union giving money to your confederate hellhole.

Ah, good ol' Republican Unionphobia. More evidence that Republicans want nothing more than to return to the gilded age.

After all, back then, if your workers got all uppity and strikey, you could just have them gunned down by police, private security, or even the US Army! Truly, a Job Creator's paradise.

That's the "laser-like focus" on jobs they've been talking about. Admittedly, not many people realized it was an industrial-powered cutting laser.

The way I read it, they're threatening to enact retribution on VW, not the workers (well, not directly). Why are Tennessee Republicans anti-business?

AP is kind of the Twitter of news. Tells you what, where, who, and when. No expansion. I guess it must have been designed for garage sales.

I'm pretty sure that's a direct violation of Federal labor laws, specifically those under the purview of the NLRB

2014-02-10 05:27:12 PM
But Volkswagen built the plant and hired the workers.  If the workers vote in a union, Volkswagen hasn't threatened to close the plant.  Volkswagen kept their end of the deal  Shouldn't the issue of unionization be a matter between the workers and the employer?  Apparently Volkswagen's union-employees in Germany pressured the corporation to allow for unionization in non-German plants so as to not be exploiting labor outside of Germany.

I guess the Republicans didn't think through their cunning plan to destroy Detroit by giving incentives for automakers to move to non-union states.

Welcome to the New South, brother. How do you like our Negro shop foreman and our uppity woman Union local president? I hear they vote for damn Democrats.

/I predict the flow of non-Republicans southward will be matched by a flow of Republicans northward. Sort of like the black migration from the South but with a lot less lynching.

Ya know what the issue is....these anti-business workers join a union and the next thing they are going to want hand outs!
To stop that in its tracks Tennesee will stop the long pratice of giving the government hand outs to the deserving business "job creators."

2014-02-10 05:29:47 PM
So the Republicans are saying they will continue taxpayer-funded corporate welfare only if the corporation knuckles under to big-government pressure?
