Hemp? As in the paper-like product that was deemed illegal because the dude from Deadwood convinced the feds to make it illegal?

Legalize pot, you farkwits. It's past due

yeah I know but I had to keep the fark thing about blaming someone who sounds like the guy that did the thing that was done going. Also, I didn't know that wasn't due to the paper industry seeing it as a threat. My bad.

/still, only legalizing industrial hemp for research purposes in colleges/universities in states that allow it while it's raining on a tuesday in every other month ending in "Y" is stupid.

So is hemp really the miracle fiber? Did Hearst kill it? Did big cotton sabotage it?

Don't care. Legalize it.

That article is all debunk and zero bunk.

Without making a case for an alternative theory of why hemp was made illegal, it's all just hot air.

McConnell teamed up with President Obama? I do not believe it

*reads article*

It was a tiny thing buried in the farm bill. Are we sure McConnell actually cooperated with the President?
It must've been a liberal plant.

Wait, they legalized industiral hemp, for rope and clothing and that sort of thing???

We've been waiting for YEARs for this to happen in Oregon.  We legalized hemp a while ago, and were waiting to issue permits until the feds legalized it.

SWEET BIPPY! Jobs incoming!!!!

And then I get to the line about it only being research related growth.

Goddamn it so much...

What Actually HappenedTM:

There is a buried provision in the Farm Bill that lets universities grow hemp for research if and only if their state also legalized hemp growing. The article makes no mention of any political maneuvers by McConnell or Obama.

Who gives a shiat. Hemp is way over hyped. It's a somewhat useful plant among many others. It's not a miracle crop, the products that you can make from it can mostly be made cheaper, better or easier from other substances. The proponents of hemp will soon find that nobody wants to grow it because it's not really economically feasible.

I ask you, since hemp is legal to grow in most of South America, Europe and Asia, why isn't it being grown in mass quantities in those places?

Not really. Hemp is difficult to turn into fabric and produces a fabric that is inferior to cotton. Cotton is in no danger of being pushed out of the market, or even having any dent put in their market at all.

Likewise, the official line in Kentucky has been to wait and see what the Feds eventually do, before giving the legal go-ahead with any related projects.

Which shouldn't make it too surprising that McConnell is on board with the idea, and has been for awhile now.

Not actually an answer to my question.

Why isn't hemp grown where it's legal to grow it? The old Soviet Union used to grow a lot of it up until the 80's but production has declined every year, there's almost none grown now. Why do you think that is?

Nope, I'm all for it. It's stupid to prohibit farmers from growing an unprofitable crop. BTW, I support legalization of all drugs, MJ, cocaine, heroin, meth, LSD, whatever.

Maybe not useless at one time but mostly useless now. Are there uses for hemp? Yes. Is it a super crop the way proponents make it out to be? Not even close. It's probably not even worth growing or farmers would be growing a lot of it in places where it's not illegal. If there's one group of people who are good at figuring out if a crop is worth growing or not it's farmers.

It's not necessarily misleading. Mitch McConnell did indeed champion this amendment in the House, and Obama did sign it into law.

It does provide legal means at the federal level to grow hemp for the first time in decades, and universities can and will contract growing it out to independent farmers.

Baby steps.
