rage: i don't have a cable subscription, so i can't (legally) stream Olympic events.

not rage but the stereotype might annoy me if i were gay but amusing and worthy of a balls of steel salute:

My favorite part was during the opening ceremonies when the lady newscaster told everyone if they wanted to know more about the Russian alphabet they should, "google it."  Gee, newslady, that's very helpful.

i like how i was settling in to get my olympics on the other night only to end up getting english premier league soccer instead.

You want to see luge racing? Well, stay up until 11pm then. We have to run more coverage of Mary Carrillo going places, and doing things.

I just don't get it.

Yesterday I watched the NBCs coverage in the morning, then the NBC prime time coverage later in the day. But most of the coverage was of the same events-ski jumping and figure skating. Seriously? There is so little going on at the Olympics that we have to repeat coverage?  And while we are on the subject, an hour of ski jumping is just a bit much....they all sort of look the same.

But then we have to rush through the men's downhill-which has to be one of the premier events of the Winter Olympics.

And to the color analysts- maybe stop screaming and explain WTF is going on? We watched hours of the slope snowboard stuff- but not once did anyone explain the scoring. Do all the ramps count for all that much? Is distance worth more or less than style? What about cool goggles? Maybe it is not obvious, but many of us watch events we have never seen before (or see very seldom) when we watch the Olympics.

And yes, I am sure I could stream something better...but really- all I want to do is sit in the chair in front of a fire and click on the bigscreen. I don't want to run an IT lab, or fight with some website somewhere.

OTOH, there are just some events and performances that even NBC can't fark up.

I wished they would have just shut the f*ck up for awhile. Somebody in the Fark thread suggested that they have an SAP-like button that would block the announcers and let the audience enjoy the pageantry for what it is.

/I don't need to hear 14 times that they are announcing the countries in Cyrillic-Alphabet order.

I hate to admit this but I like the coverage so far. The media really has a hate on for Russia this year. They went so far as to mention the alleged affair between Putin and one of the ladies running the torch.

I just watched Team USA get our asses kicked in curling and now I have the sads.

I haven't really been watching the Olympics, so I can't really complain about anything.

However, I DO enjoy watching people on the internet whine about NBC's coverage of the Olympics, so if I could get some better coverage of that I would be happier.

So basically it's the same tape-delayed human interest nonsense that we've dealt with for decades. Except now people have the power to broadcast their disproportionate hissy-fit rage all over the world instantaneously. Thanks Slate.

Am I the only one who finds the Winter Games much more dull compared to the Summer Games? There seems to be a lot more variety in the Summer Olympics, but with the winter games it mostly boils down to skiing, skating, snowboarding, sledding, and curling. Some of it is entertaining, but the most part it just gets a big yawn from me.

No, the Summer Games are way better. There are a million track & field events, swimming, handball, basketball, gymnastics. Tons of exciting stuff.

The problem with the winter olympics is that there's very little direct competition. With the exception of speed skating, how many events feature people going against each other at the same time? If you watch luge, you see "guy going fast around a corner, fast around another corner, there's his time. Now here's the next guy going fast around a corner..." If you watch running or swimming it's "Okay, we're gonna fire this gun. Swim/run back here as fast as you can." Seeing one athlete run by another is way more rewarding than seeing a skiier hit a checkpoint 0.09 seconds faster than the current leader. There's no "photo finish" potential at the Winter games (again, aside from speed skating and cross-country skiing).

And yeah, whoever mentioned the scoring confusion upthread is right. I had no idea what was going on with the slopestyle stuff.

They should move some of the indoor summer olympics sports into the winter olympics to combat some of the summer bloat. There's no reason weightlifting, judo, etc couldn't be done in the winter.

I went to the atlanta olympics. these events were in the convention center. They threw down some mats and put up temporary bleachers. Done.

Of course in Sochi terms, doing this would cost Eleven Billion dollars.

you would see an actual outcry if the majority of americans watching had already seen the cbc and bcb programming models.   most people have no reference point of pure suck on the suck spectrum.

It's trivially easy to watch BBC coverage, don't even need to go with using a proxy, for those who are so motivated. And judging by the number of people asking for links, I'd say that's a lot of people. Also with the live streaming on NBC people are seeing how events actually run and that's not helping NBC with their regular coverage.

This is why I VPN to Canada for CBC coverage online. I dont want to stay up and watch it live, but they have full event replays that I can watch when I get home from work, and I can watch the entire event. I plan on watching me some curling when I get home today.

I "hate" it so much that I only watched the opening.

GF: "Don't you want to watch the opening ceremonies?"
Me: "No, it's a worse version of a boring parade. All they do is walk in to music."
GF: "Whatever, I'm going to turn it on and watch it."
*5 minutes lateR*
GF: "Okay you were right. This is really boring."

I might watch some hockey in the later rounds, but I really only like watching a few olympic sports (hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball) and those are mostly summer ones anyway.

2014-02-10 02:24:05 PM
Umm...yeah I don't care because I'm recording the broadcast to fast forward through all the NBC yakking bits.

2014-02-10 02:24:33 PM
I quit watching when the networks (NBC et. al) decided I'd rather see features about the Olympics. I don't care about the heartwarming struggles to get to this point. Mommy and Daddy had to drive you to the rink every day. Oh boo farking hoo. You fell down and broke your coccix, big farking deal. Everyone competing had struggles. Just quit talking and show the damn event. Show the damn thing live. I want to know when it happens, not 10hrs later. It has been too much to ask so I quit watching.

/quit watching when MTV stopped showing music videos
/yeah I'm old, get off my damn lawn.
