Joe Six-Keg: Tonnage and DRO, I completely agree, and yeah, of course the red meat gets played for the masses by the media because it's more interesting. Same thing happens in the US. What I was more looking at was that it's not the religious fundies that are running the show as much as they used to, and I'm rather pleased about that. Sorry for not being clear.

And as time moves along, they'll be even less relevant until they appeal to the masses. Look at the Catholic church, for years they kept their hard line, archaic ways, and more and more people moved away from the church. Now they have a pope who aligns more with contemporary views, and he's garnered more support.

I would assume the same thing will happen in Iran. My Iranian friend tells me its very visible nowadays, and the younger voices are being heard a lot more.

super_grass: H31N0US: No no no. We have been told time and again by a certain orthodox fundie shill on fark, who's login rhymes with ratsuma, how fundamentally bad Iran is.

This information conflicts with that worldview, and it is therefore patently false.

Does he still post here? I stopped seeing hardline zionist posts after Iran changed presidents. Not that I go out of my way to read Israel vs. Iran vs. the World threads.

Haven't seen him in a while, but then again I took a few months break from fark after one of my posts was deleted for calling him out. Maybe his sheckles are being spent on other message boards deemed more relevant and influential to his cause. Maybe he grew up a little and mellowed out, or maybe he's gone and joined the Judean Peoples Front. IDK. I do know he has me on ignore, and has for quite some time.

This is only a distraction.  If they keep doing this, we won't be paying attention when their "fleet" launches missiles at coastal US cities, then has some drinks in Havana.

Considering that more Israelis have been killed by Sunni Muslims than by Iranians and more Iranians have been killed by Sunni Muslims than by Israelis, it's not a big surprise that they are considering getting together.

I swear to god fark politics tab everyday gets closer and closer to the glib knee jerk reactions to comment section of normal news sites.

I remember when people used to have some pretty insightful stuff and would respond with more thinking then just their first reaction to it through their own political world view.

I'm unconvinced.  Iran's interests are presently best served by deception.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that Iran is intent on acquiring nuclear weapon capability, and wanted to avoid external sanctions/inspections.  Could they do that more easily with an irritating asshole like Ahmadinejad as their public face, or a nice, moderate guy like Rouhani who gives money to Jewish charities?

If you're trying to figure out what a nation is really planning, it's a better idea to study their interests than to listen to what they say.  I'd apply the same scrutiny to any country.

Iran has been 6 months from a nuclear warhead for the past 30 years or so. Many people stopped taking any warnings about Iran's threat seriously sometime during that time.

imontheinternet: Painting all Iranians as anti-semites and warmongers because of Ahmedinejad is like saying all Americans are stupid warmongers because of W.  Countries are full of people, not cartoon villains.

My first regular sexual partner was half Persian, half French. Junior year in HS. She was hot.

I saw her a few years ago at a baptism (she was related to one of the other babies being baptized). She was fat.

Of course Israel is going to cry wolf about Iran - that's in their interest.  But Israel's histrionics don't mean that Iran will never actually do just that.  In Aesop's fable, the wolf eventually does arrive.

It's hard to know what to make of it.  It is certainly different from how Iran saw Jewish state in the past.  Are they still preparing nukes to send Israel to Kingdom Come?

My Iranian friend is smoking hot. Her cousins are even hotter. Their mothers though, stereotypical old Persian woman, looking. I just think they hit an age/point in their life (mostly after kids I would assume) and the looks just wither away.

I'll take a stab at this :) I'm kinda a wing nut.

I think Iran is making peaceful gestures towards the Jewish Community, and ultimately Israel. Iran is so belligerent that it's put the Saudis and Israelis on the same side. That has to be a wake up call.

Between Pope Francis and Iranian President Rouhani, it's like oppressive regimes are starting to take a turn for the better. Now if we can just get Syria's Assad to follow suit we'll be looking at some real progress.

I'm not aware of any agreement to dismantle Iran's enriched uranium stockpile.  If Iran agreed to that, I'd be thrilled, and much more inclined to believe that Iran is serious about peace.

FTFY: "interests" are subjective and very vulnerable to mirror-imaging (thinking the other guy would do what you would do).  Actions, like building or destroying gas centrifuges for uranium enrichment are much more telling, and harder to misinterpret than "interests".

Good on him.

I realize it's propaganda for those both inside and outside of Iran's borders, but all the same...Good on him.

Sometimes, I wonder if the Obama Administration sits them down and explains to them the difference between how the GOP would treat the situation and how they themselves are willing to deal with a situation.

It would explain things.

Well, we should fix that. Maybe have a sponsorship party for any neo-con liters who want to join in and have felt excluded. Maybe even have a convention for it, balance out Fark outside of the Politics tab. We could call it RepubliCon ™ .

That's pretty general, but the agreement does include 'start neutralizing' their 20% enriched uranium stockpile (whatever that means) as well as halt production of such material.

This source puts it at 5%. Dismantle equipment used to produce 5+% enriched uranium and dilute to below 5% any existing stockpiles of 5+% enriched uranium.

Awesome.
Incidentally they could put that Uranium to good use if they bought some CANDU reactors from Canada. They are ridiculously safe and cannot be used to make weaponized anything. They can also run off the waste of other plants, producing power from crap that is too thin for a normal reactor -- also natural Uranium. They could dispose of nuclear waste, produce electricity *and* have no need to enrich Uranium.
