Sapphire will certainly be scratch proof but they still crack.

Why not just make it a six inch display?

What will all the fanboys who previously derided 5" screens as being too big, say now?

They'll never make it an obvious size like that, in your case it would be 5.9803" and Tim Cook would describe it as being the "Sweet spot" for screen sizes.

Apple has innovatively led the way again.  I can't wait until their new sclera display comes out with a PPI of over 400.  Finally, I won't have to see the hideous pixels that lesser Android phones display.

I bought an iPhone 5 because I didn't want a 4.7" screen. My previous phone was a 4.2" Droid X. If the next generation iPhone is 5", then I'll shop for a ~4" smartphone, assuming that I decide to replace my iPhone this fall. I just don't want a phone that big.

So my HTC DNA with a 5" 440 PPI screen is an iPhone 6 "wanted to have been but came out 2 years earlier"?  Good to know...

2014-02-10 10:42:55 AM
They say it's to prevent the screens cracking, which it just might do. However, something about Sapphire makes me think there's going to be a lot more shattering.

I hope this isn't true.  I want a smart phone to fit in my pocket.

Also, isn't it a bit early to speculate on iPhone 6?  These rumor mills are wrong 90% of the time anyway.

But Nokia already has had phone models with Sapphire screens since 2007.

I wouldn't mind a 5 or 6 inch screen. It'll work better for me. I also happen to like the Apple system, so if they go bigger, I'll stick with Apple. Not a big fan of Android, just a personal preference. I've tried it, though (Jelly Bean, I believe), and it didn't work well for me.

I doubt they'll give up the four inch.
It's just that Nokia and others have been eating apples lunch by selling phones to people who use them more like mini tablets. People who want more screen area for media and games.
The old idea that a phone must be one size for all hands has run its course and inflexibility is going to cost apple money if they can't at least match other offerings.

This is about apples future.
If all they've got is a small format phone for a premium price, might as well sell the stock now and call it a day.

Wait, hasn't it only been 6 months since the release of the last iPhone? Planned obsolescence has really gotten out of hand.

germ78: Wait, hasn't it only been 6 months since the release of the last iPhone? Planned obsolescence has really gotten out of hand.

Yes, because the moment the new iPhone 6 comes out, all previous iPhones will cease working. *rolls eyes*

Or...maybe Apple's realizing that there's a market segment out there who is interested in their phones, but not having a phone so tiny that they feel like they have to use it with their pinkies raised.

I have a note 2 and it's the right size for my hands, and most importantly, my eyes.  Text on the smaller phones is just too hard for me to see.

Vash's Apprentice: B-but battery life!

/In before mr. charts and graphs

Yeah that will be funny when they do and Mr Charts see that the only reason the iPhone is leading in battery is due to the smaller screen size.

I'm also confused on the people that say the large phones don't fit into pockets.  I only put mine in my pocket and i have plenty of room left over.   I do remember people saying that the larger screens are not needed on the iPhone since the size they had was perfect but I have no interest in looking up old threads to find who it was.

Yeah because Apple is the only manufacturer that releases new models every year.

germ78: Wait, hasn't it only been 6 months since the release of the last iPhone? Planned obsolescence has really gotten out of hand.

There is a new iPhone every two years.  There is a new "S" version of the iPhone every two years.  They alternate, with S's on odd years and entirely new phones on even years.

Not entirely "planned obsolescence."  The phone industry is just still evolving that fast.

If you are, for whatever reason, still using a 3GS, you can get iOS 6.  Missing some features due to the hardware not being up to snuff, but still.

Most Android makers cycle even faster, and drop support even sooner.

Most (well, the one that counts, Nokia) also cycle pretty fast, but keep support longer (except for the WP7 to WP8 switch, which was kind of necessary because of the kernel switch).  All WP8 phones will get WP8.1 later this year, and I wouldn't be surprised if they get 9 as well.

Might have something to do with them releasing the 5S and C, and the public reacting with "Wait... thats all you've got?".

/They played it way too safe.
/And stupid, since the cheap phones were still more expensive than the competition.

I'll be up for upgrade in Sept (if ATT won't give it to me sooner) so I might get this one. I have the iPhone 5 right now and praying that the charging hole lasts that long as it has starting giving me problems.

Again, the 5c was not "Cheap", it was a less expensive way to manufacture the iPhone 5's hardware for the mid-range. the 4s is the cheap phone.

It sucked for this year, but next year when the 5c is the 99 cent phone, the 5s is the mid-range and the 6 is the new hotness? it will all come into place. In other words, Apple thought ahead, rather than next quarter. Easy to do, when you have a few billion in the back pocket.

My Windows phone works. I don't know the screen size or anything like that, but I can still answer calls, check emails, check fark, and do photos/videos.....it works. I can't be bothered with iphone wishlists for what fanboys want. My shiat works, and if you had any sense, you would just get a phone that works.

Intermittent connection? If so, check the socket for lint. I cleaned mine and it started working again.

Every phone on the market "works" or they wouldn't be able to sell it.  I love 5" screens and will be upgrading to the Note series this year when the next model comes out because the more I use my phone as a laptop replacement the more I want the larger screens.  I rarely fire up the laptop anymore.

I have a 4.7 inch HTC and it fits in my pockets easily, even tight jeans. Compared to the iPhone it's less than one cm wider and fifteen millimetres taller. That's not going to make a huge difference.

/And don't make me bring up the cell phones I had in the nineties. Bloody thing was about a foot high and well over an inch deep.

Too big for what I use it for. And Apple now is introducing yet another set of screen sizes that programmers are going to have to plan for, especially in an environment that doesn't play nicely with multiple screen sizes/resolutions.

Yes, this will be great, mark my words. A great clusterfark.

(Letterboxing/pixalization here we go!)

/Only sort of a fanboy.
//Saw a Samsung Galaxy Note at Best Buy, thought it was very pretty. I prefer the smaller iPhone as my handheld though.
