Those same people will then biatch and moan about the food desert in their community. I GUARANTEE IT.
TheCheese: They already have a "food desert" in their community. The city was trying to court Trader Joe's in order to jump start gentrification in that neighborhood, in lieu of encouraging a less-trendy option to move in and help the current community.Which is worse? A grocery store where no one in the community can afford to buy anything, or no grocery store at all?

ikanreed: Gentrification is a good thing. Urban renewal is a good thing.
Reverend Monkeypants: WTF is wrong with gentrification?
lizyrd: Congrats on the victory. Enjoy your vacant lot.
Pocket Ninja: Trader Joe's. We'll take flash-frozen, ultra-processed crap from the cheapest supplier, package it up, wear Hawaiian shirts while we sell it to you, ring a loud bell every now and then, and our customers will become unto us as religious converts.
Lapdance: Please enlighten someone from back East here, What is Trader Joe's?
Babwa Wawa: TheCheese: Which is worse? A grocery store where no one in the community can afford to buy anything, or no grocery store at all?You know how I know you don't shop at Trader Joe's?
Driedsponge: Reverend Monkeypants: WTF is wrong with gentrification?Gentrification is fine when it is happening in an area that can afford it. Otherwise it just makes for a lot of expensive, empty buildings used once a year for Halloween costume stores.
Tillmaster: Lapdance: Please enlighten someone from back East here, What is Trader Joe's?We have Trader Joe's back East. There's one in Westport CT.Nice place - limited inventory, but decent quality and competitive prices. We shop there often.
The Muthaship: What's your next trick?
sign_of_Zeta: Reverend Monkeypants: WTF is wrong with gentrification? There are certain people within the African-American culture who see gentrification as "white culture" being imposed upon them, which is stupid for two reasons: 1. It reinforces the concept that African American culture is tied to lower economic status, and helps perpetuate the cycle of poverty in the community, and 2. the corporate fast food place in your community are exactly as African American as Trader Joe's.I hope more logical people in the African American community fight the stupidity of the others.
dletter: People who don't have TJ's seem to lump them in with the Whole Food's and Fresh Market's of the world that are overpriced, just based on some preconceived notion of what a "specialty" retailer must charge.
