Bonobo62: Doktor_Zhivago: How many stone are in an furlong?Imperial furlong or metric furlong?
lucksi: By the time I realised that my weight was going up, it was too late. By then I was a size 26Riiiight. I too have magical clothes that stretch along with me when I gain 80 kgs or something. And I would never notice becoming short on breath from stuff like walking or tying my shoes.
Queensowntalia: If someone said that to me, I would probably hurt myself. But that's OK because I'm fat and should just remove myself frrom the planet anyway, amirite?/apologizes for continuing to exist
Nogale: I can't condone behavior like this, and fat shaming has been shown to be largely (hah) ineffective. However, a big part of living fat is denial, and there are certain cases in which a nasty comment or an unpleasant encounter throws a switch. The denial mechanism goes on the fritz.I know, I'm living proof. Five years ago I was about 230 pounds (at 5'7"). One night, I guy I was seeing said out of the blue, "You know, you've got a nice face and great tits. Why don't you lose some weight?"It took a little while to sink in, but I did eventually drop a few pounds. In January 2010 I started working out with a friend who is a personal trainer. At the time I weighed 212. Some of the weight came off, and when I moved away two months later I took up running. Over time I dropped a total of nearly 60 pounds (and became a distance runner.)/// Sadly, the tits shrank from a D cup to a B. RIP boobies ;-(
Voodoo_Stu: ... My previous message should not be interpreted as an insult to the poster before me, but instead as a satirical response to the woman in the article. Dang context, needing clarification.
thamike: antidisestablishmentarianism: I'm still trying to work out how much a gill is.It's 2/3rds a peckinstance./what's a gill?//what's a gill?
BunkyBrewman: 'He walked right up to me, turned round and said, 'Look at the state of you. You're disgusting,' and threw his drink at me.Ummm... what? So she's saying she was just standing there, minding her own business and some random stranger just picks her out of a crowd and dumps his drink on her? I'm glad that she lost all of that weight and now feels much better about herself, but... that story? Not saying shenanigans, but....
Broktun: thamike: antidisestablishmentarianism: I'm still trying to work out how much a gill is.It's 2/3rds a peckinstance./what's a gill?//what's a gill?Quarter pint. . .about 100ml
Gdalescrboz: We should tell them they are beautiful just the way they are and if someone else doesn't see it, it's their problem.
octopied: Well, how nice this young lady took something positive out of someone being a complete jackass. Now, as rebuttal, read the story below about a young lady who was taunted for having a fat butt(she wasn't fat, just not thin) and developed a horrible case of anorexia.http://english.pravda.ru/society/stories/18-10-2012/122482-most_anor ex ic_woman-0/
HenryFnord: It's a trap
PillsHere: Fat shaming as a motivation tool is tricky because you really have to know your "audience." Shaming someone about the way they are (no matter what the thing is) is probably only effective in this way if the person is in denial about how bad it is. I don't know many fat people who are in denial about their weight to the point where they wouldn't be entirely crushed by an occurrence like this. Most would probably get fatter if this happened to them (emotional eating and all). I imagine you just have to not realize how fat you are for this to motivate you to lose weight.I had a friend who was/is again in denial about how fat she is until she got into a fight with a guy who told her he was sick of crazy, fat chicks. It motivated her to lose weight (for a period of time). However, it only worked because she was in utter shock that anyone considered her fat. She called me crying saying, can you believe he called me fat? I just kept thinking, well yah, you are fat, how did you not know this? She's still in denial sadly. She just thinks she's a little overweight and doesn't realize she's morbidly obese.I remember in high school I was in the bathroom stall and some girls came in and started to talk about how I was so pretty, but I wore too much makeup which made me look less pretty. It definitely shamed me into wearing less makeup. However, if those girls sad how I was so fat, I don't think it would have had the same effect. But good for her (assuming this is even a true story). Anything that motivates someone to lose weight in a healthy way is a net positive in the end I suppose.
Forty-Two: /Oh, but she deserves those chocolates. It's just a little treat, and things are so stressful. She's earned it...//My husband has a theory that his dad overeats as an act of subconscious rebellion against his mom.
baconbeard: big pig peaches: b0rscht: So, does this mean I am doing fat women a favor when I walk up to them and say how the mere sight of their flabby smelly gross sub-human blobby melty gooey flesh makes me want to projectile vomit? That's probably not the best message to take away from this. You should start with kids. Telling an 8 year old how disgusting they are will put then on a good path for a healthy adult life.On the other hand, anyone who tells an eight year old that it's "fine" and "normal" to be morbidly obese should be criminally charged.
thamike: British systems of measurement are almost as arbitrary and ridiculous as their tabloids.
AgentPothead: Fat apologists sound fat.
Spraynard Krueger: Was this the guy?[i1.ytimg.com image 480x360]
happydude45: AgentPothead: Fat apologists sound fat.And assholes are still, unfortunately, assholes
Hickory-smoked: Surely, there are ways encourage a healthy and active lifestyle without justifying douchebag behavior.
thisispete: I suppose some people respond differently, but don't let an article
Eustacia Vye: happydude45: AgentPothead: Fat apologists sound fat.And assholes are still, unfortunately, assholesYep. Fat can be temporary but being a jackass is forever.
