Aquapope: The people who started Tel Aviv and Hitler's 4th grade class.  How different would today's world be if somebody had wiped out everybody in both those pics?

Actually, the greatest benefit might have come from wiping out the 1919 peace treaty. The decisions that they made almost a century ago resonate even to today. From the division of Europe, the punishment of Germany, from the partitioning of the Ottoman empire in the most ridiculous way possible etc. etc. etc.

In approximately 6 months, the decisions made by supposedly intelligent men set the stage for WW2, Jewish/Muslim conflicts, most Middle East conflicts, not to mention communism getting a foothold. They drew lines on a map and signed papers and though that, well, that solves everything!

I doubt that killing a 10ish year old boy, or snuffing out some jewish settlers would've made as much of a difference.

Makes me wonder what the people harassing the folks doing the lunch counter sit in think of themselves after looking at that photo 50 years later.

Kinda. The caption annoys me more:

Captured? That's it? Looks like it's dead, to me.

Aquapope: I was just talking about the folks in the pics being wiped out. The 1919 pic was people watching the treaty. Kill them and likely nothing would have changed. But it's an interesting question: what if everybody at Versailles had been killed before signing the treaty? Would WWI continue for several years more? Could Germany ever recover enough from that to start WWII?

Oh, no... I understood what you were saying. i think the WW1 was over. If the issue had been more one of reconstruction and reconciliation instead of punishment, compensation, dividing the spoils of war and drawing random lines on maps of the middle east, the result might have been different. Who knows? Maybe even more greedy bastards would've been sent in to fill the void. It's hard to believe that the result could've been worse. Maybe, just maybe, cooler heads might have prevailed.

Hitler. Well, he might have been replaced by others. There were many who shared his, um, enthusiasm. He was the right guy at the right time. But then, so was Himmler, or Goering, Goebbels, Bormann et al. And they might not have made the idiotic tactical mistakes that Hitler did. We might all be speaking german.

But just imagine if Germany had been welcomed back into the community of nations after WW1 as they were after WW2... well the western portion anyway. If the middle east decided their own destiny instead of having France and Britain draw their borders in 1919, which still exist today. The borders of Lebanon, the Palestinian Mandate(Palestine/Israel), Syria, (Trans)Jordan, Iraq etc exist because of decisions made in 1919.

/ok I've rambled enough.

Godspeed, fellas.

On the plus side, we know not to fark with Buzz Aldrin.

Nefarious: It was legal to mail children in 1913?

Not really:

the few documented examples of children being sent through the mail were nearly all publicity stunts, instances of people who knew the postal workers in their area asking them to carry their babies a relatively short distance along their routes to some nearby relatives, or cases in which children were listed as 'mail' so they could travel on trains without the necessity for purchasing a ticket.

If you must morn one manta ray, please shed a tear for the hundreds of animals that Darwin killed over his lifetime.  Oh, and while you are at it, cry up a storm for the thirty giant tortoises from the Galapagos that Darwin and his crew mates ate on the voyage home.

FTA:  Modern Mechanix reports that "a giant Manta Devil Fish became entangled in the anchor and anchor rope of Captain A. L. Kahn's fishing boat while he was angling just off the shore of New Jersey, almost capsizing the heavy boat. A Coast Guard vessel came to the rescue, and killed the 5,000-pound monster Manta Birostris with 22 shots from a high-powered rifle."

Please read the caption a little farther down the page.

Bleh. Thanks. Surprising I wasn't right considering the day and age.

Kind of makes you wonder what else you are wrong about. (In a general sense.)
