FTA:  Modern Mechanix reports that "a giant Manta Devil Fish became entangled in the anchor and anchor rope of Captain A. L. Kahn's fishing boat while he was angling just off the shore of New Jersey, almost capsizing the heavy boat. A Coast Guard vessel came to the rescue, and killed the 5,000-pound monster Manta Birostris with 22 shots from a high-powered rifle."

What low resolution garbage. The mailing children image was debunked long ago. This link should be deleted.

Is it just me or did some of those seem fake as hell (or at least very poorly described). The manta ray one looked like it was a fake picture. It looks like the picture of a crane with a smaller ray blown up and cut in. And the description of the children for sale picture and the mailing children pictures also seem inaccurate at best.

"On 13 September 1944 Goeth was relieved of his position and charged by the SS with theft of Jewish property (which belonged to the state, according to Nazi legislation), failure to provide adequate food to the prisoners under his charge, violation of concentration camp regulations regarding the treatment and punishment of prisoners, and allowing unauthorised access to camp personnel records by prisoners and non-commissioned officers. "

Wikipedia said the SS was going to drop charges against him on ground of mental insanity. To bad for him the allies didn't give a shiat that he was crazy.

What makes me wonder is what the police and others who just stood by think 50 years later. I mean, nowadays, you dump ketchup on someone and you get charged with assault or something. But at the time, it was OK to just let people behave like animals because teh blacks.

Actually, the greatest benefit might have come from wiping out the 1919 peace treaty. The decisions that they made almost a century ago resonate even to today. From the division of Europe, the punishment of Germany, from the partitioning of the Ottoman empire in the most ridiculous way possible etc. etc. etc.

In approximately 6 months, the decisions made by supposedly intelligent men set the stage for WW2, Jewish/Muslim conflicts, most Middle East conflicts, not to mention communism getting a foothold. They drew lines on a map and signed papers and though that, well, that solves everything!

I doubt that killing a 10ish year old boy, or snuffing out some jewish settlers would've made as much of a difference.

I didn't know you could mail your kids. That puts a whole new meaning to Third Class travel.

I assume, they'd have traveled in the mail car, which would not have been that comfortable. Accompanied by a postal worker, he'd have to take care of the kids needs -- like food, water, bathroom.

Big difference from the postal workers of today.

The Manta ray reminded me of the time my sister and her husband went deep sea fishing. They had one of these large cabin cursers and were trolling in the Atlantic, when she got a bite. She said it didn't fight much but it took them about half an hour to get it to the surface -- and when they did they saw the wings.

The tips were wider than the boat.

They cut the line.

That photo with the snow up to the top of the telephone poles is impressive. Probably even more impressive was the flood they must have had that spring when the thaw started.

I was just talking about the folks in the pics being wiped out.  The 1919 pic was people watching the treaty.  Kill them and likely nothing would have changed.  But it's an interesting question: what if everybody at Versailles had been killed before signing the treaty?  Would WWI continue for several years more?  Could Germany ever recover enough from that to start WWII?

Nefarious: It was legal to mail children in 1913?

Not really:

the few documented examples of children being sent through the mail were nearly all publicity stunts, instances of people who knew the postal workers in their area asking them to carry their babies a relatively short distance along their routes to some nearby relatives, or cases in which children were listed as 'mail' so they could travel on trains without the necessity for purchasing a ticket.

If you get one of those stories greenlit, I promise to come back and mourn accordingly.
