No wonder my momma wouldn't let me hang out with circus folk...

Gee, that kind of takes the fun and mystique out of it.

And I bet she got all that service for free.  Ahh, 1949, must have been a great time to be alive.  These days and around here, you usually have to pay double for action like that.

After a day doing acrobatics?  Totally worth it.  That was probably just a field somewhere though, no dirtier than anywhere else.  People didn't used to be so weird about "dirt".

Nothing much has really changed. Except they don't have masseuses at Ringling. I remember getting a backstage tour at Cirque du Soleil's "Quidam" when we were both playing in Denver. They were staying in Denver for weeks (I think about two months), had apartments rented for them, they had a masseuse, they didn't have to pay for their food, everyone spoke french (as opposed to Ringling were everyone speaks spanish... I took french). I kept thinking to myself I was in the wrong circus!

I was mesmerized by those pics, Subster.  Thx.  The "elephant for sale" is my new wallpaper.

I have several old pictures of my Mom in the 50's. (She claimed to have run off underage, so I actually looked to see if she was in any of these.)

Most of her pictures were settings very much like these. As I'm to understand it when circuses were far more commonplace there was a lot of hopping around different circuses and acts. "Running off with the circus"  was apparently the ticket for getting out of one's boring old hometown, at least for girls, back in the day. The guys of course, got out by joining the service or some such.

My Mom mainly was involved in rope acrobatics, trapeze work, and later frighteningly enough, helicopter acrobatics.

She briefly worked with Ringling in the late 50's, but by then was only in the chorus I believe, her more adventurous work was with the smaller more obscure circuses.

It was interesting to see pictures other than my Mom's of that era. Thanks for posting this,  Subby.

Check out da gams on dose dames!  Also, Life was apparently the Penthouse of its day as there's no way many of those pics didn't get rubbed-out to, nor any way the Life guys didn't know it.
