I love the pauses in the play-by-play as he struggles to look up and then pronounce which alphabet soup name has the puck.

Can I suggest that they do a combined event for figure skating, like maybe singles skate and trampoline?

desertgeek: Fark that, the men's downhill starts at 2am ET. Here's what the 1st skier of final practice did on Saturday. I'm staying up for that.

Ouch.

Ishkur: Including both men and women's disciplines, that's 32 events. There are only 94 events in the entire Games. And countries can send multiple racers and sweep the medals.

You're a bit off on the count. You're including both the men's and women's versions for some cross-county skiing events (there's the classic (15/10), skiathlon* (30/15), mass (50/30), relay (4x10/4x5), individual sprint, team sprint) for both men and women, for 12 events, not 16. And there is no women's Nordic combined at all. So the three disciplines combine for 26, not 32.
As to Norway, they've won more golds and medals from speed-skating than Nordic and biathlon combined.

RminusQ: As to Norway, they've won more golds and medals from speed-skating than Nordic and biathlon combined.

Are you counting since the beginning? Most of those Nordic and Biathlon events didn't even exist for much of Olympic history. Nordic combined was one (1) event until 1988 and biathlon was 1 (one) event until 1968. But things didn't get crazy until the 90s, when they extended it to women and then they've been adding a new extra Biathlon event to every Games since 1998. Conversely, speedskating has always been four/five events since 1924, and then in 1960 they extended it to women, making it 8.

So Norway is smart. They dominated speedskating at a time when speedskating had the most redundant events, thereby increasing medal haul, then slowly shifted to being a cross-country skiing power when it picked up more redundant events. They haven't dominated speedskating in years and haven't had the need to (Netherlands dominates that shiat now).

Of the 23 medals Norway won in Vancouver, NINE of them were won by two guys, all cross-country skiing. In all, they won 14 cross-country skiing-based medals, 4 alpine, 2 freestyle, 1 ski jumping, 1 curling, and 1 lone speedskating -- a bronze.

Or in Torino: 19 medals -- 12 cross-country based skiing, 4 ski jumping, 1 alpine, 1 freestyle, 1 snowboarding. ZERO speedskating.

Or in Salt Lake City: 25 medals -- 17 cross-country based skiing, 4 alpine, 1 curling, 1 freestyle, and 2 lowly speedskating bronze.

That's not exactly lighting the track on fire. But hey, strap a couple 2x4s to their feet and shove them out into the snow and they can swish around for hours.

I'm using a cord-cutter to access CBC.ca coverage. Is there one good place to see everything that's available from their 1500+ hours of coverage? I'm not seeing it if there is.

They're pretty much showing everything. If there's a specific event you're looking for, go to the schedule and results section and find out what day it's on, then head over to the watch online (list view) for that day. If the stream isn't there yet, check back closer to the event time. It will probably be there.

If the webcast stream isn't very good quality, check the tv simulcast if it's available - that one was clearer last night before I went to bed.
