Whoa, judges just handing out generous scores like Halloween candy.

2014-02-09 05:09:03 AM

Ishkur: styckx: She went easy on the second jump and touched on the 3rd. That second jump was barely even a trick

She may have been doing something strategic. I don't know where the judges are sitting but I'm guessing it's at the bottom and even though they have monitors, the only jump they can see in person is the last one, so she may have figured that making a good impression on the final jump gets better scores.

The judges have full access to replays.. They can re-watch the entire run from start to finish as many times as they need to.

And the scoring still don't make much sense.

YEAH BABY.  Big air, very smooth.  That's gotta be good for a gold!

2014-02-09 05:19:57 AM
I think that's good enough for a medal, but not enough for gold. So I have no idea.

The judging in this sport is more random than Press Your Luck.

Seems pretty straightforward.  Fudged landings lose points (except when they don't), wobbles in midair either matter or don't (depending on the day), and if you slide down the slope on your backside you probably aren't medaling (okay, that one at least seems universal).

That's the easy part. What I don't like is the preference given to competitors who play it safe and do a conservative run which is antithetical to the spirit of the sport. We discussed the mechanics of judging such a loosey-goosey sport in this post.

This skiathlon is the stupidest thing ever.

It's like the triathlon, only they go from skiing to more skiing.

Who the hell thought up this redundant nonsense?

At the very least they should be changing from skis to snowshoes then the last couple of miles on skates along a frozen lake.

That could be cool.
Or they could just leave it as is and rename it to the Ski-a-thon.  Maybe they could collect pledges before the event, and whoever gets the most pledges wins.  Then the winner could get a pizza party or some free stuff out of the book catalogue!

Ishkur: Concussion guy, where are you? Take her away, quiet room, cranial nerve test. Come on, every sport does this now.

Her farking helmet was cracked. Her brain may be too even though she doesn't feel it.

In Olympic Russia, slope carves you.

or

The helmet is still undergoing concussion tests and its condition will be released later. Luckily there are plenty of other warm bodies available to protect the tender underbelly in future slope runs.

The staggering number of events in cross-country skiing bothers me, and they're only added so Norway can pad their medal haul. They don't win anything else. They must suck some serious IOC dick to get more of these redundant events added every Olympiad. It's worse than swimming in the Summer Games.

I did some math a short while ago. Here's all the cross-country skiing events:

The 10k
The 15k
The 30k
The 50k
The 4x10k relay
The combined/double pursuit
The individual sprint
The team sprint.

And then there's the biathlon (cross country + shooting):

The individual 20k
The relay 4×7.5k
The 10k sprint
The 12.5k pursuit
The 15k mass start.

And let's not forget the nordic combined (cross country + jumping):

10k individual normal
10k individual large hill
Team normal hill.

Including both men and women's disciplines, that's 32 events. There are only 94 events in the entire Games. And countries can send multiple racers and sweep the medals.

Meanwhile, Hockey is one event that takes two weeks to win and shows up as one (1) medal in the standings. Two including women.

So there's the secret to "Owning the Podium": fark hockey, blow the money on cross country skiing. But as a culture, do we really want to do that?
