Forget Florida

Done and done.

But I thought below-zero temperatures in Wisconsin meant global warming wasn't happening!

No, it's okay, you can still come to Florida. The polar vortex took one step down here, looked around, and then got the fark out.

I had to interact with a derper relative last weekend (yay grandpa's birthday).  He (not grandpa) was derping that exact nonsense.  I hopped on his computer and showed him this chart from the WI state climatology office, foolishly thinking it would shut him up:

www.aos.wisc.edu

So far this year we are at 20 days with a low temp below zero, and two more in the forecast.  After that forecast we're getting to where the average low is 19, and 11 is the lowest 25th percentile, and those numbers are rising pretty quickly by that date.  So I'll guess we won't end up with more than two more subzero days after the forecast (probably won't have any).  So we'll end up with 22-24 days.  Until about 1985 we saw winters that harsh about half the time.  Now it seems like the worst thing ever.  He's in his late 50's, so old enough to remember all of this (late teens/early 20s when we were having 48 days two years in a row).

His response to seeing this:  He accused the WI Climatology Office of falsifying records to "push the environmentalist agenda."  Sometimes I envy people that can stare reality straight in the face and come up with whatever it takes to pretend it isn't there.  Most of the time I pity them.

Has AGW made the winter days longer in Alaska too?

If not, I'll pass.

Not really true. We'll be dead by the time these things are constant. But as the 114 degree temps in Kansas 2 summers ago showed, temps are getting high enough to kill us. At 114 degrees corn dies. It doesn't have to be 114 all the time. And it died that day: the next morning the fields were gray.

And extreme weather has pretty much wiped out Pakistani agriculture 4 years in a row. Pakistan with that endearing combination of nuclear weapons and power Islamist minority.

On Thursday, I got back from a trip to Iceland. The temperature in Reykjavik when I left midday: 52 degrees f.

When I landed in Seattle in the afternoon, it was 18 degrees.

You things are farked up when it's almost 25 degrees warmer at the arctic circle, than it is on the coast of the Pacific, in the continental US.

I'm fine with a couple of 16.4 degree days... but averaging that over a whole month and only when it's ridiculously above average?

Yeah, I'll pass.

Ohio is cold enough :)

Who says we control it at all? Warming is happening but jury is still out on what is causing it, especially when geologists core samples are showing proof of axis tilting being a very likely cause.

What makes me suspicious is that regardless of the evidence, the "cure" is always the same... and conveniently pushes an economic agenda. For corporations, it answer is always "regulate us less, and regulate our competitors more" and for government its always "regulate the corporations that lobby us less, and regulate the corporations that don't more."

It's kinda like how you perceive fox news; The only difference is, whereas fox news has the largest viewing audience in the country, think progress actually is a fringe "news" organization.

This is what we had for a few different weeks in New York. The Hudson Valley, not even the North Country.

Below zero is not exactly rare around here, but sustained periods of double digits below zero is pretty extreme.

Alaskan here. We saw incredible weather this January. Three weeks of 40+ during night and day, torrential rain. Here in willow it should have been 20 to 30 below zero at night. The ground thawed out. All sorts of odd shiate.

And in three weeks I'll be starting iditarod with its new reroute in Fairbanks, spend over 500 miles shlepping up and down the Yukon river, then run up the coast on dirt since there is no sea ice or snow. Yeah, I'm overjoyed.

Interesting.  So it's the normal Arctic winter air, way out of position, that's making snow days the WARM days lately.  And back up north, they don't have it.

We got plenty of arctic air... now. With no moisture. 20 below outside, very seasonal.

I happen to know it is warm and pleasant in Florida right now.  For the last several years a nice couple, Marcia and Kent, who are not very good with the whole email thing have included me in their adventures.  I have no idea who they are and when they asked me to check on their pets I tried to tell them but they just keep pushing on.  Just about an hour ago Marcia emailed me to let me know they are in Florida and it is in the 70 or 80's.  Kent took a bike ride along the canal and saw 12 alligators.  Marcia doesn't like alligators but Kent told her just stay behind them and you will be OK.
