The group go 'binning' every week and grab up to £50 worth of free meals
Campaigner says he lived off one shop's bins for six months, taking £890

You're pulling it out of the trash, trash that the store pays to have hauled away. It's value is -£20 or so.

The supermarket I used to work at as a teen use to throw away boxes of cereal that had dents in the box or somehow the box got wet. They never thought reselling it or giving even though the bag inside was never opened.

The store I worked at has a policy of not throwing away anything.

Anything still good, but not able to be sold (dented cans, torn boxes, etc) is donated, and anything not fit for donation is taken out of the package and put into a special dumpster that is hauled away for compost. That dumpster has 5 locks on it, and only members of management have the key.

In reality they just throw everything in the trash because doing it the right way takes too much time.

They say they do it in an ethical stand against supermarket waste... but turn their noses up at fish fingers

Really?  I've got to be the one to point out the hilarity of the phrase "turn up their nose at fish fingers"?

How is this stealing when the wasteful gluttonous "supermarkets" are throwing it away? They are the ones who should be prosecuted. It's a disgrace the way these capitalist organisations are allowed to carry on.

Just because you're poor doesn't mean you get to skip eating.

A supermarket near my house had a dumpster for the thrown-out food for years, no locks, wide open.

It became a human feeder.  You could watch the local wildlife at any hour of the day or night.

The dumpster disappeared about six months ago.  My guess is that it followed the classic death spiral of:

Discovery!
Use by a few respectful insiders for a while.
Word gets out.
n00bs invade en masse.
Something stupid happens.
Shutdown.

If the dumpster is still on supermarket property, it might be considered stealing, IIRC.

Most markets throw out excellent quality fruits and vegetables that are fine to eat; just don't get them from the dirty crap on the bottom of the dumpster. Out of date milk will usually last for 7-10 days if it is rescued while still cold, as will cheese, yogurt, packaged meats. I grab rotisserie chickens and feed them to my cats. Just use common sense doing this.

CSB: I was dumpster diving frsh fruits one day and thee kids, ages 8-11 or so, came by and called me disgusting for doing so. Five minutes later the youngest found a used condom and had filled it with rainwater and was chasing the other two. I asked him if he knew what it was and he claimed he did.....

In Nebraska there is a food program called Food Net. Google it look at it and try to do it in your area. Nothing goes to waste here.

I don't care HOW free and awesome it might seem...Raccoons, rats, mice, and bugs find their way in those dumpsters and they will get their essence, pee, and poo all over the place. And no amount of scrubbing or "plastic protection" will save you...ya sick freaks!/seriously, if you pick through trash because you want to, you are nasty.

many supermarkets are hitting back at skip-divers, the students said.
Some pour bleach or blue dye on their products, while others slap 'not for human consumption' stickers on them.

Never read Grapes of Wrath? Oranges dumped because no-one would buy them, then as the hungry and destitute 'Okies watched, the goons sprayed kerosene on the fruit so no-one would get a 'free' meal

I believe it's part of a strategy to prevent lawsuits
Injury from climbing fences and food poisoning
plus helps deter an *undesirable* element from hanging around

I also believe that much of what would have ended up in the dumpsters is sent to homeless shelters and food banks before it reaches dumpster stage

That's *believe* nor *know*

I know people who live in squats and they skip for food. I was visiting them and noticed an orange in their bin which they had skipped then thrown away for some reason. It looked ok so I fished it out of their bin and ate it.

It was fine but to my knowledge I am the only person to have eaten food that was thrown away, skipped, then thrown away AGAIN.

/Double skipper.
//Don`t go skipping at pret a manger, they give their old sandwiches to the homeless already (well done)
