Cool and all, but isn't this a little late?  Didn't last year's repeal of DOMA sort of mandate this right then and there?

Therion: Changes are coming fast and furious!

(grumpycatgood.jpg)

Just 13 years ago the Netherlands became the first nation to allow same sex marriage.  Now most of the developed world and 1/5 of our states are on board.  That's nothing to sneeze at.  Sure, long way to go for full equality, but a lot has happened in a relatively short period of time.

/not gay (NTTAWWT) but I have gay relatives
//love them to death
///wish they had the same rights as I have

what doesn't cause massive conservative butthurt these days? For people who devote so much energy painting liberals as overly sensitive, they sure are a prickly bunch.

Either the Obama administration was already doing these things as they should have been, or they were breaking the law.

Not really.  The article explains why, but there are many other more in-depth articles that do.

Holder could rescue a bunch of kids from a burning orphanage and "conservatives" would be butthurt. about it.

Of course if gay marriage partners don't use the proper amount of lube, it could also lead to butthurt.

This is a good assertive step in the spirit of Loving and the 14th Amendment. Good on him.

Extra lulz because if you speak out against this, you're pretty much an asshole.

Well you've done it now, Holder. Now that gay marriage is legal, we'll all turn gay & the human race will die out. This is clearly a pathway for Obummer & his cronies to take over the world and establish a New World Order. And then I'll finally get to say "I told you so." You should've listened to me!

I'm torn. I don't care for AG Holder, so as much as I support this action part of me is desperately trying to turn it into something like, "Oh, so AG Holder is going to go ahead and comply with the courts now? How magnanimous." Unfortunately, there's no actual substance to that so I have to just be happy about what he's doing without finding a way to condemn him, dammit. Stupid gay rights getting in the way of my blind dislike for someone.

2014-02-08 04:09:01 PM
"Just like during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, the stakes involved in this generation's struggle for LGBT equality couldn't be higher," Holder will say, according to a copy of his prepared remarks. "As attorney general, I will not let this department be simply a bystander during this important moment in history."

*golf clap*

Cue the "gay rights =/= civil rights" wingnuts.

/Extra bonus points if they bring the "special rights" derp.

ok.. stay with me here farkers... I heard same sex marriage would lead to being about to marry a turtle or a bridge or whatever... so now that weed is legal in Colorado and Washington could you marry a giant bag of weed and then take it wherever you went?

I don't remember where I heard it, but it's an interesting question: how did people have anal sex before lube (I'm looking at you, ancient Greece)?  Did they use animal fat or did they just go in dry?

I'm not sure, but if one appeals enough one gets to the federal level, depending on the case.

Yes. The alimony comment was surprising - I didn't know federal judges dissolved marriages.

The bankruptcy cases should be interesting though.

Someone should tell conservatives that there are other sections of adult stores that sell things like lubricants and such, which may ease the butthurt a bit.

Some federal privileges of marriage are granted depending on whether the couple is married at all (place of celebration a.k.a. "married is married").
Some others depend(ed) on whether or not the state they were married in considered them married (place of domicile / residence a.k.a. red states can still fark you over and prevent gays from getting federal  benefits of marriage).

This article sounds like the federal government has decided to just order a blanket change on all regulations to the place of celebration standard.

If you're both actually in to it, your body has already produced lube naturally.  Anus tends to relax as well.  Keep a bar of soap handy otherwise.

You don't have to be gay to understand anal sex.

Huh, I thought all federal marriage benefits became available to same-sex marriages after that part of DOMA was repealed.

Repealing DOMA mean they didn't have to actively oppose gay marriage rights at the federal level. This new direction means they are going to move toward actively supporting them.

I think the main effect of this in political terms is that the GOP is going to have to oppose this in order to appease their base, which will turn away yet more moderates.

So have any conservative types actually weighed in on this or is this just more liberal tongue waving about nothing.

FWIW- I don't have a problem with the equal treatment thing.  Kind of a no shiat stance actually.

Nonsense.  I've been assured that gay creatures could always get the same privileges through private contracts, and just want to ruin marriage for normal people.

Dear Warden,

I, Icky Gay Thing, do hereby give permission for my icky gay partner to visit me in prison.

Signed, in the presence of two witnesses,
Icky Gay Thing.

The GOP has promised that will totally work, and be completely the same.  Ditto for bankruptcy and everythign else, since private contracts can totally change federal law and whatnot.

Pretty much this. I think Holder is a criminal to the nth degree and most likely had some ulterior motive for this latest news. But to me, it's not a huge deal. No matter what, it's a step in the right direction for truly equal rights.
