I am not a Leno fan, and I very seldom watched the Tonight show during his entire run, but who did Leno p*ss off at NBC that they wanted to get rid of him so badly? It seems like he lost the job the same way he got it in the first place, through backstabbing politics.

Wait, are they supposed to leave it up as a memorial or something?

Exactly, it's all about the re-branding of the show.

I just assumed that they got tired of him not being funny.

Fallon won't get the ratings that NBC wants after two days and Leno will be back on the following week.

Happened before...who says it won't happen again

Why not?  It's where jokes went to die like a former autoworker in a FL nursing home.

You know, it is so fashionable to take a shot at Jay Leno. Look, the fact is the man is out there every bloody night with fresh material and he's charming.

Lorne Michaels. Basically he's been maneuvering for a few years to have "his guys" control Late Night and he finally got his wish.

Ratings are down across the board on network TV. NBC decided that Leno just costs too much for what he brings in now and that they'd be better off with the much cheaper (and younger) Jimmy Fallon

I don't really get all the Leno hate.  I didn't really watch him often even when I had cable, but Jimmy Fallon just seems annoying and even less funny.

Maybe I should get it seeing as how I can't stand Fallon or Kimmel or the 2 Craigs.  I could tune into Leno and while I didn't think he was great he didn't annoy the shiat out of me like those others.

Leno had a good run and made enough money to grow his car collection to an amazing degree, which seems to be the only thing Leno is actually passionate about.

Can we bring back Johnny Carson?  I'm old enough to remember the time when you turned on Johnny Carson after the late night edition of the local news.  It was just what any civilized person who wasn't already asleep did.

Leno is unfunny and Fallon is a hack.  Pretty telling the only thing funny on Leno was Headlines, where he didn't have to do anything but let the fans send things in.  Letterman's whole schtick is laughing at how inept he is at his job.  Ferguson is funny at times when I've watched.  Usually not up late enough to watch these shows since I'm an adult and have a job.

gfid: I don't really get all the Leno hate.

Basically he agreed to step down and give Conan the Tonight Show, left for a month, then changed his mind and demanded NBC put him back on the air so he could do another show before the Tonight Show, thus killing most of Conan's post-news lead-in audience.  Given that Conan had turned down a very generous offer from CBS to take over for Letterman only because NBC promised him the Tonight Show starting in 2009, this was seen as a grade-A dick move, especially because Leno's show was too short to be anything but drivel.  Instead, Conan left so he could have his own show not subject to the whim of a late night entertainer who refused to retire, and the non-cable world was robbed of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien forever.

Short version: he screwed Conan, a guy who put in the years and the hard work, for selfish reasons.  Even if you don't like Conan that much, it was a dick move done to a guy who deserved anything but.

Citation needed.  This has never been proven and only ever denied by Leno.

I used to hate Fallon, but after watching several of his impressions and musical numbers I've changed my mind on him.  When he tries to be like every other late night host he's awful.  When he plays to his strengths he's really quite good.  Hopefully now that he's at the helm of the flagship late show he'll feel like he can open up a bit more.

As for the rest, Letterman really only has good bits every now and then, though at least he doesn't veer into the stupid/"low hanging fruit" jokes as much as Leno did.  You know the ones I'm talking about: they weren't offensive in the traditional sense, but they were based on such an ignorant or badly informed viewpoint that they were painful.

Ferguson on the other hand has the best opening monologue in all of late night TV every night, without exception.  The rest of his show can be really inconsistent, but those opening 2-5 minutes are always gold.

I will admit the "demanded to come back" part may be unprovable, but the rest is what happened.  Leno was slated to retire, and had publicly mentioned his impending retirement prior to 2009.  Instead, Leno came back with a crappy show at 10pm.  Leno's crappy show started killing the ratings for local NBC news shows and all NBC's late shows (not just Conan).  Leno's show was then slated to be moved after the news, bumping The Tonight Show to after midnight.

I suppose you could argue that NBC tempted Leno with a new contract more than he demanded to come back, but everything after that is quite solidly his fault.  Any other person would have been cancelled in a heartbeat. For Leno they were going to destroy late night, probably cancelling Last Call with Carson Daly entirely.  And what does Leno do?  Step aside, admit his time on TV is done, like a gentleman would?  No, he decides he'd rather get his at the expense of three other late night hosts.

So yes, Leno is a dick.

Considering he's been dead for 9 years, probably not.

On the other hand, dead Johnny would  still be better than Joan Rivers.

After the Opening Ceremony replay, they had a quick plug for the last Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, put in after local news after the Ceremony ran late.  I have yet to see one Late Night with Seth Meyers commercial, maybe towards the end of the Olympics (I do not want to see a half hour preview near the end of the Closing Ceremonies).

Can't stand Letterman anymore. He used to be good but how he's in Old Man mode and his interviews are really awkward. When he does skits and follows the script he's still funny but his rants and monologues just wander. I think he needs to retire.

Craig Ferguson is really funny and I like watching his interviews. It seems like he'd rather just have a good time with his guests than let stick to standard promotional interviewing. I'd hate to see him move to 11:35 and take Dave's place, but since Craig is 50 years old, I don't think he'd be considered.

I've seen two spots for Seth's show on YouTube. One where he's walking across from the SNL set to his only to discover the set for his show hasn't been made and another with different clips of Seth from Update.

I'm curious to see how Seth's Late Night show ends up being since I have no idea what to expect.

Eh, weren't they paying Leno $25 or $30 million a year? I doubt that any of you would be that principled if they were waving that kind of money in front of your face.

If I watch anything late at night, it's Colbert, even his interviews are consistently entertaining and the writing is amazingly clever. I'm a little surprised that neither he or Stewart ever made the jump, though they probably have most of what they want already, especially in terms of creative control.

I doubt that. Craig's whole thing isn't for even the early late night audience, and I think he knows it (one of his running jokes is how CBS doesn't even know he's on). He's great where he is, and I think everyone knows it would be a mistake to move him to a more commercial and competitive time slot.

I agree completely. Craig's (self-described) deconstruction, of the late-night genre wouldn't work an hour earlier. Nor would his "rusty trombone" type jokes or profanity, even with the cute little flags.

Apparently.  I'd think they'd want to use that studio to film, you know, Other Stuff.  I guess they're supposed to use it as an altar to the television gods or something.

Well, maybe the forklift just wasn't in that picture.  Though I have no idea what they'd want a forklift for.  The only thing I can think of would require a sacrifice to the OSHA gods, maybe at an altar the next lot over.

i like ferguson and wish he was on earlier but i get why he isn't for everyone.

i used to love letterman when he was after carson. never liked leno. i like conan. i also get why he might not have worked earlier.

i will watch some of conan's stuff. usually on youtube though. his skits are usually pretty funny. the one on his xxx site with the the wife does a crossword puzzle with a black man...had me rolling.

fallon has grown on me but i haven't seen an interview or watched a show. i've seen all the skits and musical numbers. they aren't bad.

stewart and colbert are the most consistent. i can't see everyone (read older people and conservatives) really watching them. networks want broad appeal. i'm probably more conservative on some things but i also can make fun of things i like. i appreciate humor and satire (growing up a monty python fan probably helped).

His musical skits are fantastic. His interview skills are atrocious. Makes for really polarized viewing. Makes me feel all itchy inside.

My opinion on Leno:

I would watch him when he was a guest on Johnny Carson.

I would watch him when he was the guest host, but only for a few days, because he got old quick.

I never watched him as the host of the Tonight show.

I'm sure Leno is somewhere sobbing into his huge pile of money. I doubt Jimmy Fallon is the answer to the Tonight Show woes. No one under 60 watches the Tonight Show.

The rush to clear out of there is because NBC sold its Burbank studios years ago and was just leasing that space until Jay was done. They're moving to Universal Studios which is where Conan's Tonight Show had been set up. Leno had stayed at Burbank and NBC would have kept paying the rent as long as he was on.

I'm old enough to remember also, and Fallon is by far the closest to Carson among available hosts. His ability to HOST is very much like Carson's. Carson always allowed the guest to be the funniest and/or most interesting person on the show at that moment. Fallon seems to have the ability to do the same thing.

The rest are comedians who can't set go of that Alpha position long enough to be a host rather than a star.
