So India is barred from the olympics and their athletes have to compete under the olympic flag? Must not have paid the bribes to the IOC in a timely manner

In 2010 a friend of mine was given a ride down the Whistler sliding run in a two man bobsled.

He described it as like being in a car accident that lasted for 45 seconds.

I was astonished to discover, by way of this video, that India is basically country non grata at the Olympics, thanks to rampant corruption. That has to be a national embarrassment for India.

Not that I have been seeking out Olympic news but for someone who spends at least a couple hours a day on the internet I just found out about this as well...  I don't know if Fark has let me down or I crawled in to some hole but I swear I have never heard of the suspension until this video.

Since this only affects India for this Olympics and India is hardly a winter sports powerhouse, I'm not surprised this wasn't big news outside of Inida.

Its not about dragging India through the mud this year.

The Indian delegation had a CHANCE to be able to march under their own Flag.  The Indian IOC decided to hold elections after the deadline passed, and thus caused the IOC to pull it's charter.  The embarrassment is on the Indian IOC, and the Indian IOC alone.

I'm saying the athletes from India are clean.  They have EVERY right to be called Indian Olympians.  The Indian IOC let them down.

They briefly mentioned this on CNBC a couple of days ago...it was a trivia question during a cut-away to a commercial. I must have heard about it somewhere because the question was "What country's 3 (or whatever the number was) are participating in the Olympics under the Olympic flag?" and I blurted out "India."  I think the news stories about the IOC being banned were from a year or two ago or whenever they got the ban and it's not like they tend to medal in sports America wins so no on heard about it.

This is nothing new. You can see all of them in the opening ceremonies. They don't carry their countries flag, they carry, and compete under, the Olympic flag.

I think it's unfortunate for the Olympians and believe the rules should be reviewed. At least split the representation 80/20 or something. Maybe a thin banner with the countries colors on the bottom? I'm sure a creative solution could found. It's not the Olympians fault the countries leaders are corrupt.

I give less than a shiat about the entirety of the Olympic games in their current form.

But....DAMN. That was something to watch.

I seem to remember people who competed under the Olympic flag a few years ago because their country didn't really have a government at the time or some such shiat. So, it's not always about an FU from the IOC.

It's usually a hodgepodge of stories but I think you're right.  There was a guy at the summer games in London who moved to the US because of a civil war in his home country.  The civil war had ended by the time the Olympics came around, but one of the warring sides had killed his entire family as part of their genocide, so he refused to march under his country's flag.

On a sidenote, as a brown man I think what the IOC did was completely fair.  The Indian Olympic committee couldn't get their shiat together.  The Indian athlete was still allowed to compete, and he even wore a Nehru-cap as a tribute to his home country.

I was up in Calgary a number of years ago and they let you do a part of a luge run.  It's only about the bottom third of the course and you don't get up to any *real* speed, but I think it took about a week to get the smile off my face after that.  If I wasn't 48 and with a family I'd consider ditching everything else and give it a shot.

I'm gonna try to hit this place up before the end of the season. At least 2 of the other 3 were used in the olympics, so, I'm completely fine with this one for a first time.

I hate to be the one to nitpick, but don't call this guy a luge contestant. That implies he's some asshole on a gameshow. The man's a slider, racer, or just plain athlete.

This times... god, how many people are there in India? Yeah, that many.

And if was at the luge track, I would've taken up a collection to buy that guy a nice dinner and a couple of drinks after that. He earned it. Even the best sliders don't do that, at least that I've ever seen.

Biatching about the word "contestant" is definitely a new one for me. I should've seen it coming with sentences that start with "I'm not a big [X] but..."

He participates in luge contests. It's perfectly cromulent.

He participates in athletics, too?

Just my own minor nitpick about a quirk of US English.

This Kiwi one worked for me, from the UK.
