(Atlanta Journal Constitution)   Nancy Grace shows a modicum of restraint out of respect for the three-year-old girl found dead in a freezer in California. Who am I kidding? It's Nancy Grace. She lambasted the parents while using the hashtag "FreezerTot"   (ajc.com) divider line

Actually, she has a lot of influence on the case, just not the way she wants.

I maintain that Casey Anthony was found innocent because Grace drummed up enough media attention to get a Lawyer looking to make a name for themselves to step up and take the case. If she had just kept her trap shut no one outside of Florida would have known or cared about the case and Anthony would have been stuck with a first year public defender who couldn't help her.

Nancy Grace is responsible for getting Casey Anthony found not guilty.

Now it looks like she's going to try it again.

tlars699: KidneyStone: Corvus: How is this woman still on TV? She already drove someone to commit suicide and they still let her on the air?

It's disgusting

How does someone drive another to suicide?  If they're that weak someone else will come along and do it.

Your kid, the thing you've been doing right and well by in your life, dies.
You become severely depressed. Nobody seems able to help you.
You go onto a show, hoping to clear up some misunderstandings and get people focused on justice for your baby.
You meet the host. She's very nice, and kind of pretty. She talks to you for a bit and things seem great.

Cameras go on. The host berates you and tells the National Audience at her disposal that You are the guilty party for allowing your kid to die(things you're already feeling), and that you know more than you're telling, and when you start to sputter out of shocked anger and grief, you're told that it just proves you're guilty of harming, or allowing harm to come to your baby, and nothing you can do or say will show otherwise.

Cameras go off. You're talked to by the host lady some more, and taken back to the place you're staying.

You're left alone to wallow in all of that misery.

What would you do?

Almost as disgusting was her interview with Elisabeth Smart. Smart was trying to get support for a sex offender bill and Grace keeps trying to get her to talk about the details of her abuse on national TV.

As a rule I am opposed to violence and against women even moreso, this made me want to violate that rule.

If you read TFA, however, the outrage is coming over Grace not respecting the people who kept the body of their child in a freezer for three days. Nancy Grace is a classless act for sure, but those folks are really no better than she.

I did read TFA. I read this paragraph: "On Twitter many users quickly took to their own stream, calling the host out on the insensitive hashtag use.  Some reminded Grace, that the girl she referenced as "FreezerTot" had a name and was a victim."

Nancy Grace and her unholy daemon-spawn Jane Velez-Mitchell are the most evil people on television--and that they manage to out-evil everyone on Fox News is amazing. Hell, even Glenn Beck isn't as horrifyingly evil.

But he's not that other person.

These types of emotional, theoretical arguments fall short because we're all humans with different levels of coping/overcoming.

What I've been through in the past four years would have driven most to suicide but when my coworkers complain about their husband drinking two beers too many and cracking bad jokes and they're just mortified...well, that's okay.  They are different and have different experiences.

I'm not defending the callousness of the comment, but even in your story, it wasn't just one thing that drove your theoretical person to suicide...it was many.  Some just don't take as much.

I think it's possible to be angry and alarmed at the girl's death without creating a hashtag that makes it all sound like a bad pun. I'm Gen-x and I barely understand what a hashtag is but the whole bizzo sounds to me like the gags about Head Like A Hole which followed Kurt's suicide. I can't believe that I have to live out the remaining years of my life hearing about this pointless crap that didn't exist for the first 30 years of my life.

So you think it's cool for her to do this because Facebook didn't exist when you were a young un'? Got it. Grace is kinda old, that will probably be her excuse, too.

Where did I say I think it's cool? Another person who has learned to read on the Internet, and just makes the words mean what he wants them to mean.

My crotchety complaint is that 30+ years ago, people didn't have the ability to broadcast their idiocy to the entire world, and it was a much less shiatty world to live in.

I make my living on technology, websites, social media, etc, but that doesn't mean I'm happy we have all this ME ME ME crap.

Your complaint seemed to be entirely with social media, not this twat, but 30 years ago, people were still saying dumb shiat, they just had to get up and get in front of a camera, which she already has, so we probably would have heard it from her anyway, unfortunately.

Personally, I think Twitter servrs two purposes: I've seen it used well in emergencies/disasters, and it's useful for bands going on tour to announce dates. The second one can be handled over Facebook, so really, I'd be happy if it was only used for emergency notifications. I absolutely detest Twitter, there's a reason the root word is "twit".

For everyone in this thread who feels the same: A 'tag' is the way that search engines figure out what you're looking for. If you want to find carrots, Google\Bing\Yahoo\Whatever looks for something tagged 'carrots'. A hashtag is a way of putting that tag inside of a post, originally on Twitter but lately on other social media sites, so you can search within the site for things that you want to find. It's part of how search engines work.

It is also used to create jokes or bad puns, because that's human nature.

I'm 38, a step-grandparent by virtue of marrying a lass 4 years older than me who had her kids early and who have gone on to have their kids early, and have never tweeted or signed up to Twitter. I stopped paying attention to popular culture in 2006. I'm not even on Facebook. So I don't know. What I would suspect is that they don't have to be for jokes. So a more respectful hashtag might have been, as has been suggested, #justiceforKayliegh or perhaps #RIPKaleigh or something similar. #Freezertot seems to me to be a punchline to a joke no one is making. May as well have gone with #Frozensuitcasetoddler because doesn't actually seem to be worse but it would I think be in very poor taste to anyone who knew the kid involved.

Come on you tasteless farkers, who can come up with the most offensive hashtag that Nancy Grace might have considered before deciding on Freezertot? The challenge is on.

D'OH! replied to the wrong post. This was in reply to TrappedSpirit's question 'Are hashtags just for jokes'. Sorry all.

Russ1642: She goes all ape and claims she's not going to stop until the mom's in prison for life. She has exactly ZERO influence on the case. None. Nada.

Actually she has negative influence. Casey Anthony properly would have been convicted but then she brought national attention and the prosecutor came under so much scrutiny that they couldn't use anything that was even remotely off. So her crusade got a guilty as hell woman off without a hitch.

It was actually the last couple of months that has done it.

And that's how bigotry is justified. Carry on.
