Nancy Grace is such an insufferable, awful, person that at times I wonder if she actually killed her fiancee and everything since has been some kind of internalized self-loathing rampage. Her freaking book is such a work of transcendent projection that she could teach Glenn Beck a thing or two for God's sake. How she hasn't ended up at Fox by now is beyond me.

I think it's possible to be angry and alarmed at the girl's death without creating a hashtag that makes it all sound like a bad pun. I'm Gen-x and I barely understand what a hashtag is but the whole bizzo sounds to me like the gags about Head Like A Hole which followed Kurt's suicide. Mildly humorous but not repeated by those who actually gave a fark. She's either concerned or a terrible comedian, she can't be both.

How does someone drive another to suicide?  If they're that weak someone else will come along and do it.

Your kid, the thing you've been doing right and well by in your life, dies.
You become severely depressed. Nobody seems able to help you.
You go onto a show, hoping to clear up some misunderstandings and get people focused on justice for your baby.
You meet the host. She's very nice, and kind of pretty. She talks to you for a bit and things seem great.

Cameras go on. The host berates you and tells the National Audience at her disposal that You are the guilty party for allowing your kid to die(things you're already feeling), and that you know more than you're telling, and when you start to sputter out of shocked anger and grief, you're told that it just proves you're guilty of harming, or allowing harm to come to your baby, and nothing you can do or say will show otherwise.

Cameras go off. You're talked to by the host lady some more, and taken back to the place you're staying.

You're left alone to wallow in all of that misery.

What would you do?

Almost as disgusting was her interview with Elisabeth Smart. Smart was trying to get support for a sex offender bill and Grace keeps trying to get her to talk about the details of her abuse on national TV.

As a rule I am opposed to violence and against women even moreso, this made me want to violate that rule.

Don't forget how the Duke lacrosse players were obviously guilty...except when the charges were dropped. That night, and a few nights afterward, she was conspicuously absent from her own show.

darch: durbnpoisn: OMG.  Would someone just shut this asshole up already?!

In somewhat related news...
The emergency broadcast system went off this morning.  All I gathered from it was that there was a child missing.  Then they proceeded to say that the alert was for all counties in NJ.  Then they read them off.
That was all.  No other information.  Like, for instance, what to WATCH FOR!!

Oddly enough 10 minutes later I got an Amber Alert on my phone that had all the information pertinent to the case.

15 minutes later, there was an arrest made.  The 4 month old baby was recovered safely and the kidnapper was arrested.

Same here. And I'm a cop on duty! I was like, "Um... how 'bout a DESCRIPTION??!?!1"

Well, it put you on alert, didn't it?  ;-)

I can't believe that I have to live out the remaining years of my life hearing about this pointless crap that didn't exist for the first 30 years of my life.

So you think it's cool for her to do this because Facebook didn't exist when you were a young un'? Got it. Grace is kinda old, that will probably be her excuse, too.

Where did I say I think it's cool? Another person who has learned to read on the Internet, and just makes the words mean what he wants them to mean.

My crotchety complaint is that 30+ years ago, people didn't have the ability to broadcast their idiocy to the entire world, and it was a much less shiatty world to live in.

I make my living on technology, websites, social media, etc, but that doesn't mean I'm happy we have all this ME ME ME crap.

Your complaint seemed to be entirely with social media, not this twat, but 30 years ago, people were still saying dumb shiat, they just had to get up and get in front of a camera, which she already has, so we probably would have heard it from her anyway, unfortunately.

Personally, I think Twitter servrs two purposes: I've seen it used well in emergencies/disasters, and it's useful for bands going on tour to announce dates. The second one can be handled over Facebook, so really, I'd be happy if it was only used for emergency notifications. I absolutely detest Twitter, there's a reason the root word is "twit".

Aussie_As: I'm Gen-x and I barely understand what a hashtag is

For everyone in this thread who feels the same: A 'tag' is the way that search engines figure out what you're looking for. If you want to find carrots, Google\Bing\Yahoo\Whatever looks for something tagged 'carrots'. A hashtag is a way of putting that tag inside of a post, originally on Twitter but lately on other social media sites, so you can search within the site for things that you want to find. It's part of how search engines work.

It is also used to create jokes or bad puns, because that's human nature.

You're left alone to wallow in all of that misery.

What would you do?

But he's not that other person.

These types of emotional, theoretical arguments fall short because we're all humans with different levels of coping/overcoming.

What I've been through in the past four years would have driven most to suicide but when my coworkers complain about their husband drinking two beers too many and cracking bad jokes and they're just mortified...well, that's okay.  They are different and have different experiences.

I'm not defending the callousness of the comment, but even in your story, it wasn't just one thing that drove your theoretical person to suicide...it was many.  Some just don't take as much.

Best for us all to remember that and be ready to accept it if we do offend on accident.

True. I was just trying to hammer it home on his empathy button.
And Nancy Grace should read all that. She'd probably try to call out Glenn Beck/Pat Buchanan for ever doing this to that poor girl...

I'm not seeing that using the word "tot" makes much difference here.  It's a legitimate word.  Sounds better than 'kid' but the fluck all I know what hashtag usage truly means/does.  Maybe you know of some tot jokes that make the word funny.  Maybe you could share those jokes then I could see that hash tag in the proper light.  Freezergirl sounds like a super hero.

Or maybe, and I'm right out on a limb here, maybe just maybe making the sorry tale into a hashtag at all isn't actually, you know, compulsory. Maybe that was actually subby's point. It seems reasonable to me.

Is that the murder of her fiancé was more myth than reality? Apparently, Nancy successfully capitalized on an embellishment of the story. In reality, her fiancé was killed by a coworker who immediately admitted to the crime. He did not file any appeals. Currently, Tommy McCoy is a free person who has served his time. In other words, her fiancé was a victim of workplace violence, a concept which she has publicly mocked in the Annie Le Yale Lab murder case.

She was a horrible assistant prosecutor for Fulton County, with several write-ups from judges:

"The federal judges ... showed they were troubled by Grace's actions. ...
Scofield added that he was not condoning Grace's actions, writing, "The prosecutor clearly played fast and loose with her disclosure obligations in this case." Stephens v. Hall, No. 1:99-CV-1317 (N.D.Ga. April 2, 2003).
...
'We conclude that the conduct of the prosecuting attorney in this case demonstrated her disregard of the notions of due process and fairness, and was inexcusable,' wrote then Chief Justice Robert Benham. Carr v. State, 267 Ga. 701 (1997)."

Nancy Grace reassures me: there's no way the world can actually be as bad as she makes it out to be. The greater her histrionics, the more I know its all a show.If it were real, serial killers would be playing rock-paper-scissors to see who gets to stuff and mount her in their respective living room. She's just a jigger of PT Barnum lightly salted with MSG outrage and sweetened with a sympathetic smile made entirely from high fructose corn syrup.
